Opis:
This paper presents research and measurements leading to obtaining the Young’s modulus of wing bearing structures of selected insect species. A small testing machine intended for three-point bending and equipped with instruments registering low forces was constructed for the needs of the experiment. The machine was used to perform numerous bending tests of wings of three species of insects (obtained from a breeding farm): Attacus atlas, Vespa crabro, Libellula Depressa at various air-humidity conditions. Values of the force and displacement obtained in the course of the tests were used to calculate Young’s modulus. In order to do so, it was also necessary to obtain the moment of inertia of the wing cross-section. These values were measured on the basis of the images obtained with a SEM microscope. Obtained results were averaged and presented with a breakdown by air-humidity conditions. It was observed that Young’s modulus decreased with an increase of humidity, hence the calculations of the percentage decrease of this mechanical parameter were performed. Obtained results were compared with the observed structure which was also presented under light microscope. It transpired that the construction of a wing does not only influence the mechanical values but also it influences their susceptibility to the changes occurring in the environment. Thereby, differences between Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera insects were indicated also within the aspect discussed in this paper.

Opis:
Sandstone is one of the most popular building materials since the earliest times. It has various textures and colours as well as good technical parameters. Sandstones, having such wide applications, are subjected to various external factors during the period of use. So, it is of utmost importance to have a good knowledge of their strength parameters. We employed a numerical method called Discrete Element Method to examine in a non-invasive manner the mechanical strength of industrial sandstones, that are commonly used as broken stones in road construction, cladding material, paving stones, pavement tiles and so on. Various mechanical external factors were considered, such as breaking, compressional and abrasion forces or impact by external objects and vibrations. Fragmentation of the considered sandstones under compressional regime was a source of knowledge about energy storage inside the material and energy release, as well as appearance of fractures inside the matter and final sandstone fragmentation into crumbs.

Opis:
In this paper the results of study of mechanical properties for four commercial polymer-ceramic composites applied in the conservative dentistry are presented, including one new silorane based composite and three standard composites based on methacrylate compounds. Influence of the type of light of diode and halogen polymerization lamps on the microhardness, flexural strength and elasticity were studied. Both exposed and unexposed specimens were taken into account. An exposure time was also differentiated (40 sec and 60 sec). Basic statistics of the analysed material parameters were determined. A post hoc test (Newman-Keuls) was performed in order to evaluate differences between microhardness of the studied materials, as well as Kruskal-Wallis test to evaluate differences in flexural strength and elasticity modulus of the material. It has been indicated that there is an impact of the type of lamp on the microhardness and flexural strength of composites with methacrylate matrix and lack of such impact in case of composites containing siloranes. Additionally, it has been found that an increase of photopolymerization time has a significantly different impact on the mechanical properties depending on the type of irradiated material.

Opis:
In this work authors presented distribution of circumferential stress in wound composite structures made from different layers. The cylindrical shape specimens were made from layers which have different elastic moduli. Manufactured specimens underwent strength test to obtain distribution of circumferential stress as a function of radius. Circumferential strain on outside surface was measured by fiber optic strain gauge. In order to verify the experimental results were made microscopy specimens, obtained material properties by homogenization method and calculated the strain using analytical approach. In the end, authors compared results obtained from both methods.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of CAD/CAM ceramics to dentin after cementation with conventional or self-adhesive resin cements. Methods: Three self-adhesive, self-etching cements (Panavia SA, RelyX U200, Maxcem Elite), and one conventional cement (Panavia V5), were selected to lute three CAD/CAM ceramics (IPS Empress CAD, IPS e.max CAD, IPS e.max ZirCAD) onto the dentin. The bond strength was evaluated using a shear strength test according to the PN-EN ISO 29022:2013-10. Evaluation of the differences was performed using the Statistica software. Failure modes were analyzed using a light microscope. Results: All the studied cements differed (regardless of the ceramic type) in the bond strength. The highest bond strength was observed in Panavia V5, lower – in RelyX U200 and Panavia SA, and the lowest – in Maxcem. For IPS e.max ZirCAD, it was observed that compared to Panavia V5, the other cements were characterized by a significantly higher bond strength. For the IPS Empress CAD and the IPS e.max CAD, Panavia V5 displayed the highest bond strength. For all the studied self-adhesive cements, the failure of adhesion between the cement and dentin was predominant mode. Conclusions: Significant differences were found in the shear bond strengths of the CAD/CAM ceramics luted to dentin using tested self-adhesive and conventional cements. The bond strength depended on the combination of ceramic and cement. The IPS e.max ZirCAD had the highest bond strength to dentin after cementation with RelyX U200, while the IPS Empress CAD and IPS e.max CAD – with Panavia V5.
