Opis:
This work is focused on dewatering of barite-containing clay waste from a barite beneficiation plant by coagulation and flocculation to enhance the dewatering rate and recycling of process water. A flocculation performance of co-polymers (Superfloc A-130 and A-100) was compared with coagulants (Al2SO418H2O, CaCl2 and FeCl36H2O). The best results were obtained with an anionic co-polymer, i.e. Superfloc A-130. The settling rate increased 635-fold in the case of using anionic co-polymer Superfloc A-130 in comparison with the natural settling rate of the same wastewater. In laboratory tests, an optimum thickener design was developed for the barite clay wastewater. In this paper, sedimentation studies on the barite clay wastes are presented for the first time, both as the laboratory studies and industrial applications.

Opis:
Ten water-soluble ions (F, Cl, NO3, PO43–, SO42–, Na+, NH4+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+), distributed among four fractions of particulate matter, PM, were investigated in an urban background site. The PM was sampled twice a week during a two-year sampling period. Mass distribution among the PM fractions and ambient concentrations of the ten PM-bound ions in the heating and non-heating periods, the seasonal effects in the PM fraction-bound ion concentrations (generalized regression model), and the principal components of all the resulting sets of ambient concentrations (principal component analysis) were determined, discussed, and interpreted in the terms of source apportionment of PM emissions. The formation of secondary inorganic aerosol in transformations of gaseous precursors (e.g., SOx, NOx, NH3) appeared to be most probable and significant source of PM2.5, especially of its sub-fraction PM1–2.5, in the non-heating period. In the heating period, PM and PM2.5 bound water-soluble ions originated mainly from combustion of coal and other solid fuels, or waste. Coarse particles (PM2.5–10 and PM10–40) and some PM2.5–40-bound ions (e.g. Na+, K+, Mg2+) may come from re-suspension of mineral matter and road dust. In some part, coarse PM may consist of mineral and salt particles containing gaseous and semi-volatile compounds.

Opis:
Stabilization/solidification (S/S) method is a potential solution for immobilization of heavy metals containing waste. Immobilization of heavy metals from spent grit, waste material from the shipbuilding and ship repair industry, into the fly ash based geopolymers using the S/S method was evaluated. Addition of spent grit in the quantity of 10% of total solid content of geopolymer mixture decreased the compressive strength of fly ash based geopolymers but did not affect the change of geopolymer strength in function of synthesis parameters. TCLP and EN 12457-2 leaching test were used for the evaluation of chemical stability of contaminated geopolymers with respect to the leaching of heavy metals. The both, TCLP and EN 12457 leachates fulfill the maximum acceptable limits for landfill disposal with respect to the heavy metals concentration. The highest concentration of Zn is observed in a both, TCLP and EN 12457 leachates due to the synthesis parameters.

Opis:
Contamination of soil and groundwater with pesticides is mainly caused by old ecological burdens. This study focuses on the treatment of groundwater contaminated with chlorinated pesticides. The contaminants mainly include α-HCH, β-HCH, γ-HCH, HCB, DDE, DDD and DDT. Reverse osmosis technology using RO98pHt polyamide membranes was used to remove the pollutants under batch process conditions. The observed rate of removal ranged from 98.4% to 99.7%. Total dissolved content solids decreased from 1.35 g/dm3 to below 0.05 g/dm3.

Opis:
The feasibility of effluent treatment in separate processes and in integrated systems has been compared. In the sorption process, carbon nanotubes were used in a pressure installation, enabling execution of the process of sorption with nanofiltration in a cross-flow system. Evaluation of treatment effects based on the measurement of typical pollution parameters (COD, TOC, phenolic index, forms of nitrogen and phosphorus) and concentration of bisphenol A. The results show poor feasibility of sorption as a process for advanced treatment of municipal effluent. Effluent polishing in integrated sorption-nanofiltration systems, however, guaranteed high removal rates of organic and inorganic pollutants.

Opis:
Research into the removal efficiency of biogenic substances, necessary for the growth of heterotrophic microorganisms, was carried out for the following water treatment trials: surface water, infiltrative water and mixed surface water after microsieving with aerated underground water. The results have shown that the efficiency of removal of organic substances, independently of the type of treated water, increased along with the organic carbon concentrations in raw water. The average effectiveness of phosphate removal was: 92.1%, 88.8% and 83.7% for surface, infiltrative and mixed water, respectively. In all analyzed systems, presence of phosphates was an limiting factor for the regrowth of microorganisms in the distribution system. In none of the water treatment trials, effective removal of inorganic nitrogen has been recorded.
