Opis:
The static magnetic field MF (0.44 T) effects on the adsorption of three surfactants: cationic bromide (DTAB) and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and anionic sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) from their 10-3 M solutions were studied on bare and low-temperature air plasma treated glass plates. The surface properties of the adsorbed surfactants layers were determined via the water advancing and receding contact angles measurements and then calculation of the apparent surface free energy. An optical profilometer was used to determine the structure and topography of the adsorbed layers. The DTAB and SDS concentrations were below their critical micelle concentration and that of CTAB very close to its cmc. The results showed that in the case of DTAB solution (much below its cmc) a small decrease in the contact angle appeared while in CTAB (close to its cmc) an increase in the contact angle value was observed if adsorbed in the MF presence. Quite good reproducibility of the contact angle values was obtained. This was not the case for the SDS solution where the contact angle values were scattered. The reason was that the anionic surfactant did not adsorb homogeneously on the negatively charged glass surface. The contact angles and the calculated values of the work of water spreading clearly show that MF influences the structure of the surfactant adsorbed layer which was also supported by the optical profilometry images.

Opis:
An optical study of satinated Pittsburgh glass wafers was conducted and special attention was paid to their applications in greenhouse industry. They included: specular reflectance spectra in the range 300–1100 nm, using a reflection probe, resolve angle scattering, diffuse reflectance by means of an integrating sphere, X–Y optical profile measurements and ellipsometric investigation by means of a spectroscopic ellipsometer. Additionally, a surface topography study of investigated samples was carried out by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements. The obtained results allowed us to describe surface topography of chemically and mechanically modified surfaces.

Opis:
The paper discusses preparation and characteristics of silica hydrophobic layers deposited on the plasma-modified glass supports. The surfaces were investigated using wettability measurements, profilometry, photoacoustic and infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as well as scanning electron microscopy. The wettability measurements showed that the obtained surfaces are hydrophobic – the water contact angle was in the range of 140-150 degrees. The photoacoustic and infrared spectroscopy as well as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy disclosed the surface compositions, particularly that of the hydrophobic alkyl groups deposited on them. They were methyl groups introduced during hydrophobization by hexamethyldisilazane. In addition, it was found that the number of groups on the surface depends on the kind of plasma by which the supports were activated. The optical profilometer showed differences in the surface roughness which affects their hydrophobicity. Moreover, the surface free energies were determined using the contact angle hysteresis method. They disclosed differences in each surface, depending on the way of supports activation. The largest hydrophobicity was obtained on the layer deposited on the support activated by the argon plasma. However, support activation by the air plasma resulted in a decrease of hydrophobicity compared to that of the non-activated surface.

Opis:
The behaviour of glass beads and polyethylene pellets as the extra bacteria support in the fine black shale ore in the column bed bioreactor was compared. Capillary rise experiments enabled the calculation of the contact angle and the surface free energy of glass beads and polyethylene pellets. The results showed that the support material made up of polyethylene pellets yielded a higher copper extraction, which could be explained by conditions favourable to cell adhesion on the polyethylene surface.
