Opis:
This study analyses the hemodynamic variations surrounding stenoses located at the left coronary bifurcation, and their influence on the wall shear stress (WSS) in realistic coronary geometries. Four patients with suspected coronary artery disease were chosen, and coronary models were reconstructed based on high-resolution CT data. The coronary stenoses were observed at the left circumflex and left anterior descending branches, resulting in a lumen narrowing of >50%. Flow analysis was performed using computational fluid dynamics, to simulate the cardiac flow conditions of the realistic individual patient geometry. Blood flow and WSS changes in the left coronary artery were calculated throughout the entire cardiac phases. Our results revealed that the recirculation regions were found at the poststenotic locations. WSS was found to increase at the stenotic positions in all four patients. There is a strong correlation between coronary stenosis and the hemodynamic changes, which are reflected in blood flow pattern and WSS, based on the realistic left coronary geometries.

Opis:
The Ciminio-Brescia arterio-venous fistula is a preferred vascular access for haemodialysis, but it is often associated with the development of vascular complications, due to changes in hemodynamic conditions. Computational fluid dynamics methods were involved to carry out seven simulations of the blood flow through the fistula for the patient specific (geometrical) case and various boundary conditions. The geometrical data, obtained from the angio-computed tomography, were used to create a 3-dimensional CAD model of the fistula. The blood flow patterns, blood velocity and the wall shear stress, thought to play a key role in the development of typical complications (stenoses, thromboses, aneurysms, etc.), have been analyzed in this study. The blood flow is reversed locally downstream the anastomosis (where the artery is connected to the vein) and downstream the stenosis in the cannulated vein. Blood velocity reaches abnormal value in the anastomosis during the systolic phase of the cardiac cycle (2.66 m/s). The wall shear stress changes in this place during a single cycle of the heart operation from 27.9 to 71.3 Pa (average 41.5 Pa). The results are compared with data found in the literature.

Opis:
This paper presents the problems associated with the transient thermal load of structures exhibiting a non-linear relationship between load and strain. The mathematical model required to comprehensively describe the relationship between fluid and solid has been shown from different perspectives. In addition, the Newton-Raphson method has been referred to as a way of solving nonlinear equations. The article also presents the assumptions and results of numerical analysis of thin-walled container thermally loaded by contact with hot water. The conclusions drawn emphasize the importance of Thermal-FSI tools, especially in the power engineering sector.

Opis:
The article presents the results of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of gas-liquid multiphase flow. The simulation was conducted using CFD code and the Euler–Euler approach. The presented study relates to the non–reactive, steady-state, turbulent flow of water and carbon dioxide mixture in a 3D pipe. Separation phenomenon between phases is observed. The solution was obtained using a mixture model. Different values of carbon dioxide volume fraction were taken into account in the analysis of the results. The analysed cases were compared thanks to the obtained calculations results. The main purpose of the simulations was to show streamlines, velocity, pressure, and volume fraction distribution that could be useful in developing pipeline systems in many industrial applications, especially for CO2 separators.

Opis:
The feasibility of using a software package, based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes to simulate two-phase (gas–solid) flows in a cyclone with a tangential inlet was studied. The method-ology of numerical simulations and calculations has been presented and the main parameters influencing the effectiveness of the cyclone elaborated. Findings are presented as contour maps of the distribution of selected flow parameters (velocity, pressure) in some parts of the apparatus or as visualizations of vortex formation structures and particle motion trajectories in the cyclone. The results of simulation were compared with those based on literature correlations and experimental results of laboratory tests.

Opis:
Purpose: Hemodynamics has a key role in the atheropathogenesis. Indeed, atherosclerotic phenomena occur in vessels characterized by complex geometry and flow pattern, like the carotid bifurcation. Moreover, the lifestyle is a significant risk factor. The aim of this study is to evaluate the hemodynamic effects due to two sedentary lifestyles -sitting and standing positions- in the carotid bifurcation in order to identify the worst condition and to investigate the atherosclerosis incidence. Methods: The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was chosen to carry out the analysis, in which in-vivo non-invasive measurements were used as boundary conditions. Furthermore, to compare the two conditions, one patient-specific 3D model of a carotid bifurcation was reconstructed starting from computer tomography. Different mechanical indicators, correlated with atherosclerosis incidence, were calculated in addition to flow pattern and pressure distribution: the time average wall shear stress (TAWSS), the oscillatory shear index (OSI) and the relative residence time (RRT). Results: The results have highlighted that the bulb and the external carotid artery emergence are the most probable regions in which atherosclerotic events could happen. Indeed, low velocity and WSS values, high OSI and, as a consequence, areas with chaotic-swirling flow, with stasis (high RRT), occur. Moreover, the sitting position is the worst condition: considering a cardiac cycle, TAWSS is less than 17.2% and OSI and RRT are greater than 17.5% and 21.2%, respectively. Conclusions: This study suggests that if a person spends much time in the sitting position, a high risk of plaque formation and, consequently, of stenosis could happen.
