Opis:
Microbial community and physiochemical processes were monitored by means of denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) in two sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) running for partial nitritation-anammox and differing in the feeding phase durations (6 h 40 min for SBR1 and 40 min for SBR2). Both SBRs were treated with reject water with a high ammonia concentration (>600 mg for over 370 days. The aim of the experiment was to present the influence of this parameter on total bacterial and anammox bacterial community structure. Molecular analysis revealed that a drastic decrease in influent ammonia concentration to the studied communities caused a change of genotypic structure in their composition. The difference in the reactors working scheme can be the reason for divergence in the community structure though having no drastic influence on its performance and biodiversity level. Feeding time has stronger influence on the genotypic composition of the total bacterial community than on anammox biocenosis.

Opis:
Factors contributing to nitrogen removal in a biological aerated filter (BAF) using oyster shell medium have been investigated. The system was operated in parallel with a bio-ball filter. Both filters were fed with a synthetic domestic wastewater containing approximately 25 mg N/dm3 of total nitrogen (TN). The COD of wastewater was 200 mg O2/dm3. The sizes and dissolved oxygen (DO) of the voids within both filters were measured. Results indicated that the oyster shell system performed better with a nitrogen removal of 64.3%. The two systems exhibited a similar COD removal efficiency of approximated 80%. The oyster shell filter showed higher degree of variability in both sizes and DO levels of its void spaces. The condition provided a favorable environment for nitrogen removal through simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND). The release of carbonates from oyster shells were minimal, as judged from mass balance analysis of the system using calcium. It is concluded that the function of a SND reactor can be enhanced by using non-uniform filter media such as oyster shells. On the other hand, alkalinity is not a major concern when treating wastewaters with moderate ammonia concentration, such as that of domestic wastewaters.

Opis:
The influence of sudden and gradual temperature fluctuations on the stability of partial nitritation applied for the treatment of reject water containing ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) in the range of 1000 –1400 mg/dm3 was investigated. It was found that a sudden decrease in temperature from 24.3 °C to 14.3 °C and 15.8 °C significantly affected the stability of the process. No negative effect was recorded after a sudden temperature decrease from 24.3 to 17.4 °C. It was also found that during a gradual temperature decrease from 24.3 °C, process stability was negatively affected at 12.7 °C.
