Opis:
Crashed or dimensional rocks have been used as natural construction material, decoration stone or as material for artistic sculptures. Especially old historical towns not only in Slovakia have had experiences with use of stones for construction purposes for centuries. The whole buildings were made from dimensional stone, like sandstone, limestone or rhyolite. Pavements were made especially from basalt, andesite, rhyolite or granite. Also the most common modern construction material – concrete includes large amounts of crashed rock, especially limestone, dolostone and andesite. However, rock as any other material if exposed to exogenous processes starts to deteriorate. Especially mechanical weathering can be very intensive if rock with unsuitable rock properties is used. For long it had been believed that repeated freezing and thawing in relation to high absorption is the main reason of the rock deterioration. In Slovakia for many years the high water absorption was set as exclusion criterion for use of rocks and stones in building industry. Only after 1989 the absorption was accepted as merely informational rock property and not exclusion. The reason of the change was not the understanding of the relationship between the porosity and rock deterioration, but more or less good experiences with some high porous rocks used in constructions exposed to severe weather conditions and proving a lack of relationship between rock freeze-thaw resistivity and water absorption. Results of the recent worldwide research suggest that understanding a resistivity of rocks against deterioration is hidden not in the absorption but in the structure of rock pores in relation to thermodynamic properties of pore water and tensile strength of rocks and rock minerals. Also this article presents some results of research on rock deterioration and pore structure performed on 88 rock samples. The results divide the rocks tested into two groups – group N in which the pore water does not freeze even when the temperature decreases to –20 ºC, and the second group F in which the pore water freezes. It has been found that the rocks from group N contain critical portion of adsorbed water in pores which prevents freezing of the pore water. The presence of adsorbed water enables thermodynamic processes related to osmosis which are dominantly responsible for deterioration of rocks from group N. A high correlation (R = 0.81) between content of adsorbed water and freeze-thaw loss was proved and can be used as durability estimator of rocks from group N. The rock deterioration of group F is caused not only by osmosis, but also by some other processes and influences, such as hydraulic pressure, permeability, grain size, rock and mineral tensile strength, degree of saturation, etc., and the deterioration cannot be predicted yet without the freeze-thaw test. Since the contents of absorbed water and ratio between adsorbed and bulk water (of which the absorbed water consists) is controlled by the porosity and pore structure, it can be concluded that the deterioration of some rocks is strongly related to rock pore structure.

Opis:
The present study discusses the adsorption kinetics of arsenic(V) on granular ferric hydroxide (GEH) and the GEH adsorption capacity for arsenic(V) at equilibrium. The impact of temperature on GEH adsorption capacity was studied, as well as the effects of the initial concentration of arsenic(V) and GEH concentration on the adsorption rates of arsenic(V). The Freundlich isotherm describes the arsenic(V) adsorption behavior reasonably well (r2 > 0.965). The adsorption kinetics was studied by fitting the experimental data to both first-order and second-order models. The maximum adsorption capacity of arsenic(V) on GEH was 2.701 mg·g–1, which is higher than the adsorption capacities of other adsorbents reported. The kinetics of arsenic(V) adsorption was well defined by the second-order model, with the correlation coefficients in the range of 0.960–0.987. This study shows that due to its properties, GEH is a good candidate for removal of arsenic(V) from groundwater.

Opis:
The present study was focused on the technical feasibility of using immobilized hybrid biomass of Pleurotos sajor-caju and sunflower for Pb(II) removal from the contaminated water. After preliminary evaluation, it was found that immobilized hybrid biomass of Pleurotos sajor-caju and sun-flower effectively removed Pb(II) from wastewater at pH 4.5. The effect of various experimental parameters on Pb(II) uptake by hybrid biosorbent was systematically evaluated in a batch biosorption system. The optimized biosorbent dose, contact time, initial metal concentration and temperature were 0.05 g/100 cm 3, 180 min, 800 mg/dm3 and 60 °C. Dynamics of the adsorption process were studied, and the values of rate constants of pseudo first order and pseudo second order kinetic models were calculated. Equilibrium isotherms for the adsorption of Pb(II) were analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The sorption of Pb(II) followed the pseudo second order kinetic model. The Langmuir sorption isotherm fitted well to Pb(II) concentration data. The results revealed that this new hybrid biosorbent system was a promising candidate for eliminating Pb(II) from contaminated aquatic environment.

Opis:
The use of γ-alumina (γ-Al2O3) nanoparticles as adsorbent to remove Cr(VI) from aqueous solution was investigated using batch experiments. Adsorption experiments were carried out for various initial doses of Al2O3, initial concentrations of chromium(VI), contact times and pH. The structure and morphology of the sorbent was characterized by XRD, SEM, and TEM techniques. Results demonstrated that the removal efficiency of chromium(VI) was increased by increasing the contact time, initial concentration, and pH. The results of the study showed that adsorption of chromium by γ-alumina nanoparticles reached equilibrium after 60 min and after that a little change of chromium removal efficiency was observed. Furthermore, kinetics of chromium sorption was well fitted by pseudo-second order kinetic model, and well explained by the Freundlich isotherm (R2 > 0.992). Overall, alumina nanoparticles recognized as an effective sorbent to remove chromium(VI) from aqueous solutions.

Opis:
Adsorption isotherms and kinetics of the removal of heavy metal ions (Ni, Pb, Zn) from aqueous solutions by natural adsorbents (zeolite, bentonite, clay) were investigated in a lab-scale batch study. The effect of various parameters such as adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of heavy metal ions, temperature, and agitation time were studied to optimise the conditions. Under those optimized conditions (180 rpm agitation rate, 120 min agitation time, pH 4.0, 298 K, 100 mg/dm3 initial adsorbate concentration), the removal percentages of heavy metal ions for natural adsorbents have been determined. The adsorption mechanisms and characteristic parameters of the process were analyzed by two and three parameter isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Redlich-Peterson, Toth and Sips), and kinetic models (Lagergren's pseudo-first order, Ho and McKay's pseudo-second order). Adsorption thermodynamics of heavy metal ions (changes of standard enthalpy, entropy and free energy) on zeolite, bentonite and clay were also studied at 298,318 and 338 K.
