Opis:
In order to remove the harmful metal ions in lead-zinc mineral processing wastewater, two natural clay minerals (bentonite and kaolin) were used as adsorbents and Zn(II) ions were the emphasis in this work. The adsorption behaviors including kinetics and isotherms were investigated by batch experiments. In addition, the adsorption mechanisms were studied by means of zeta potential testing, optical microscope and XRD analysis. The results show that the adsorption process can be best described as the pseudo-second order kinetic model. The adsorption equilibrium data of bentonite and kaolinite can be respectively fitted best by Langmuir and Freundlich models. Thermodynamic studies display that the adsorption of Zn(II) onto clays is non-spontaneous and endothermic. The maximum capacity of Zn(II) adsorbed on bentonite and kaolinite respectively reaches to 79.2 mg·g-1 and 6.35 mg·g-1 at 25 °C. The structural differences of bentonite and kaolinite result in the differences in adsorption behavior and mechanism. The interaction mechanisms of Zn(II) with bentonite and kaolinite involve electrostatic attraction, cation exchange, surface complex and precipitation. Bentonite as adsorbent has the potential to remove Zn2+ better than kaolinite.

Opis:
The soils consist of various components that can play a significant role in control of heavy metals in the environment. Therefore, understanding of adsorption properties of soil is essential in solving pollution problems around mine sites. The goal of this paper is to study Zn(II) ions adsorption onto copper mine soil. Soils were examined via X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The influence of various parameters such as effect of pH, adsorbent dose, and initial concentration of Zn(II) ions on adsorption was evaluated by batch method. The adsorption isotherms of Zn(II) ions such as Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin were studied. The Langmuir isotherm indicated an excellent fit for the experimental data in comparison with other isotherms that shown monolayer adsorption onto a homogenous surface. A number of kinetic models were tested to fit the kinetic data. The results show that soils can be more effective in decreasing heavy metals contamination specially Zn(II) ions from solution phase.

Opis:
Adsorption properties, including isotherms and kinetics, of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) for Cu(II) and Zn(II) removal from synthetic mine drainage were evaluated in batch tests. The influence of contact time, nZVI doses, pH, ionic strength, temperature, and concentration on nZVI adsorption properties was assessed. The removal of Cu(II) and Zn(II) increased with pH from 3 to 7 and then stabilized up to pH 10. Moreover, the increased Cu(II) adsorption capacity upon increasing temperature and a positive enthalpy change (ΔH) indicate that the adsorption process is endothermic. The results also showed that the adsorption equilibrium for Cu(II) and Zn(II) was achieved after 50 and 30 min, respectively. Kinetics were best described by a pseudo-nth order model, with the order of sorption of 2.231 and 1.363, and the rate constants of 0.0008 and 0.0679 mg1-n·gn-1/min, for Cu(II) and Zn(II), respectively. The correlation between the amount of metals adsorbed on nZVI surface and the residual amount of metals in water during isothermal tests was best described by the nonlinear Sips model. Using this model, high q maxS were found: 286.6 mg/g and 142.6 mg/g, for Cu(II) and Zn(II), respectively, as indication of their high sorption capacity.

Opis:
The zinc leaching filter cake residue as a secondary resource is used for hydrometallurgical lead production from brine (chloride) media. In this method, zinc accumulation caused decrease in the lead leaching efficiency in feed solution as well as a defective cycle flowsheet in production process. Therefore, an experiment was designed for the solvent extraction (SX) of zinc from brine solution after lead cementation stage. The results indicated that approximately 98% zinc with a little contamination of other metals was extracted under optimum conditions (193.5 g.dm-3 of D2EHPA in kerosene as diluent, pH=3.5, contact time=5 min, temperature=40±2 °C and aqueous: organic ratio (A:O)=1:1). Also, according to the differences of ∆pH0.5 and separation factor values among Zn and other ions, D2EHPA as an organophosphorous extractant has suitable capability for zinc selective extraction from brine solution. Moreover, H2SO4 solution which was used for stripping to transfer Zn2+ ions to zinc conventional production sulphate media achieved high efficiency of 99%. McCabe-Thiele diagram was simulated to counter-current extraction route. The results showed that two stages were needed for both extraction and stripping.

Opis:
A biconical dense medium cyclone (BDMC) was applied to reject the gangue from a low-grade Pb-Zn sulfide ore for the first time. Based on mineralogy and heavy liquid separation tests, it was found that the rejection of gangue by the BDMC prior to grinding and flotation was promising. The results revealed that the particle size clearly affected the heavy liquid separation process. The effects of several parameters, such as medium specific gravity (SG), spigot diameter, tilt angle, cone angle and medium/ore mass ratio, on the yield of floats and on the metal recoveries in the floats were examined and the optimal parameters were determined. The results showed that 51.22% of floats were obtained with a lead recovery of 7.92% and a zinc recovery of 12.50%. The extended tests were further carried out with the BDMC being capable of throughputs about 3 t/h, which verified the results obtained in the laboratory experiments. The use of this equipment to pre-treat the refractory ore is promising.

Opis:
The dynamic growth of mobile technologies is a driving need for portable power sources. The most popular division of electrochemical cells relies on the type of chemical reaction within the cell. Current data coming from the Polish market show that despite the growth in the sale of secondary power sources, zinc-carbon and alkaline batteries are still the most popular. The results of non-reductive acidic leaching of zinc and manganese from the waste batteries stream have been presented. Manganese was leached with almost 100% yield in an experiment with a solid to liquid ratio equal to 4/1, pH of 1.04, and H2SO4 concentration of 72.5 wt. %. High yields were also obtained for zinc recovery from the waste stream (100% for two series with solid to liquid ratio 4/5, pH of 0.80; H2SO4concentration of 37.2 wt. %, and solid to liquid ratio 1/2; pH of 1.01; H2SO4 concentration of 27.3 wt. %). Besides, the quantitative and qualitative analysis of Zn-C and Zn-Mn batteries introduced to the Polish market and waste generated in the years 2010-2018 has been presented.

Opis:
As a solid waste, the associated disposal cost of fly ash is really high. Previous studies suggested that the utilization of fly ash to treat heavy metal-contaminated soils was a new cost-effective method of disposal of it. Therefore, the effectiveness of fly ash stabilized/solidified Zn-contaminated soils has been investigated by unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and toxicity characteristics leaching procedure (TCLP) tests. Quantitative analysis of the soil microstructure was conducted by processing the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) was carried out to illustrate the size and proportion of pore size for specimens under different ratios. The results of the tests showed an improvement in the UCS, which further increased as the content of binders was raised. Binder content would have little influence on the development of strength if the binder content exceeds a threshold value. The leached Zn2+ concentration of stabilized specimens was significantly decreased compared to that of untreated. Quantitative analysis confirmed that the addition of the binders resulted in the amount of hydration product, reduction of porosity, and a really random pores orientation, which was responsible for the improvement of the strength and leaching properties of the Zn2+ contaminated soils.

Opis:
The study was conducted on three specially prepared test areas along main streets of Bialystok. The experimental plots were sown with two lawn grass mixtures: Eko and Roadside, and three doses of sewage sludge 0.0 (control), 7.5 kg/m2 and 15.0 kg/m2 were used. The calculated bioconcentration factor made possible to determine the mobility of the various metals from the soil solution to the aerial parts of plants. The obtained results showed that the plants absorbed Cd, Zn, Cu easier than Pb and Ni suggesting a high mobility, in particular of Cd, Zn, Cu, and reflects the easiness extraction of those metals by plants. Significant correlations between concentrations of metals in soil and grass were observed, nickel in soil was significantly correlated with Cd, Zn and Cu in plants, while the Zn content in soil with the level of Cu in plants.
