Opis:
The impact of land use and a distance from the highway on heavy metal concentration in soils along the highway has been investigated. 28 soil samples were collected in August 2014 from the roadside soils of the Hemmat highway of Tehran, Iran. The results showed that the mean concentrations of Pb, Cr, Ni, Zn and Cd were 144, 17.20, 18.91, 86.84, 3.86 mg/kg–1, respectively. With exception for Cd, the concentrations of the heavy metals decreased upon increasing distance from the highway that shows the background amount of cadmium in the soil area was high. The values of the enrichment factor (EF) showed that Ni, Zn and Cr have a natural source (EF < 10) and Pb and Cd have an anthropogenic source (EF > 10). The anthropogenic sources are emphasized for these heavy metals, thus indicating the strong human influence. The mean values of geoaccumulation index (Igeo) for Pb, Zn, Cd were high at residential, under-construction and green space land uses. The ecological risk index (RI) for roadside soils was higher than 300, indicating that sampling sites had a considerable ecological risk. The potential ecological risk index for single metal decreases in the following sequence: Cd > Pb > Ni > Zn > Cr.

Opis:
Water quality status of marshes within Mesopotamia has been investigated, and temporal and spatial changes determined by examining causes and effects. Data gathered from predesiccation and after re-flooding periods were subjected to index and statistical analysis. The quality of waters in the region was assigned to polluted class, regarding specific salinity related parameters. Total dissolved solids, chloride and sulfate were main variables negatively impacting the water quality. The main quality parameters creating spatial differences between the selected marshes were electrical conductivity and total dissolved solids. Temporal differences in dissolved oxygen, salinity, nitrate and phosphate concentrations between the 1980's and 2000's reflected the impact of desiccation and water shortage on the marshes. Salinity and nutrient concentrations generally increased after desiccation compared to their historical levels. These findings indicated that the Mesopotamian marshes had poor water quality due to increase in the concentration of salinity. The study revealed that the index and statistical methods are useful tools identifying water quality and fingerprinting pollution. This will help decision makers to establish strategic and comprehensive water management plans.

Opis:
Driven by the booming demands for healthy food, aquaculture industry has to deal with the problem of water pollution appropriately so as to achieve sustainable development. In this study, a combination of four stage CWs (three horizontal subsurface flows followed by one free water surface flow) was configured to treat low-strength aquaculture wastewater. For performance assessment, the wetlands were monitored over three years, during which artificial aeration was added to them. By the results, the organic matters and nutrients were mainly sequestered in the anterior subsurface flows, while the surface flow mainly contributed to DO improvement. These results probably implied no necessity of excessive subsurface flows connected in a staged manner. In addition, the artificial aeration improved the treatment performance on ammonium-N, TN and TP in the first-stage CW.

Opis:
The study assesses the performance of experimental wetland pond systems vegetated by Lemna minor L. (common duckweed or lesser duckweed) for textile azo dye removal. The objectives are to assess the influence of L. minor on water quality parameters, compare the dye and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of four dyes (Acid Blue 113, Reactive Blue 198, Direct Orange 46 and Basic Red 46) with each other, and monitor the effect of dye accumulation as a function of the relative growth rate (RGR) of L. minor. Findings indicate that the simulated shallow pond systems remove BR46 (low concentration) significantly (p < 0.05) higher than other dyes, and the ponds containing L. minor outperformed control ponds by around 51% in mean removal efficiency with a potential of L. minor for phytoremediation of approximately 13% efficiency.

Opis:
The performance of horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland (HFCW) for rural domestic sewage treatment has been evaluated. The system was built as a tertiary treatment after the biological processes to improve the effluent wastewater quality. The HFCW was operated in three phases under different hydraulic loading rates (HLRs), and with three kinds of aquatic plants i.e., water spinach, Chinese celery and cress. The vegetation growth parameters such as plant height, fresh and dry weights were monitored and analyzed. The influent and effluent concentrations of the chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) were measured. The average removal efficiencies at the first phase were 52.9%, 64.7%, 58.2% and 72.8%, and it reduced to 48.6%, 52.2%, 44.04% and 64.4% in the second phase for COD, NH4+-N, TN and TP, respectively. In the third phase, the HFCW system showed the following mean removal efficiencies: 51.2%, 74.2%, 58.5% and 80.9%. The results revealed that the removal efficiencies increased with decrease in the HLR and increased temperatures. The findings confirmed that the horizontal flow constructed wet-land is more convenient for the rural wastewater treatment with efficient nutrient removal.

Opis:
Influence of composition of raw wastewater on the efficiency of organic matter and nitrogen removal in multistage treatment wetlands has been examined. Commonly used indicators, like COD/BOD5 and BOD5/TN ratio, determining wastewater susceptibility to biodegradation in conventional treatment technologies were assessed. It was confirmed that multistage treatment wetland may be used for treatment of wastewater with high loads of organic pollutants and unfavorable composition for a biological treatment expressed by the ratio of COD/BOD5 and BOD5/TN equal to 2.7 and 0.7, respectively.
