Opis:
A theoretical model for describing the influence of the evanescent wave on the red blood cell (RBC, erythrocyte) in the blood plasma is suggested in this research work. Two optical schemes for creating an evanescent wave and the features of the created field’s effect on the erythrocyte are considered. The conditions for the formation of optical forces and optical momentum, in particular, of the vertical spin of the evanescent wave, which causes a transverse displacement of the erythrocyte, are proposed. The use of a linearly polarized plane wave with azimuth of ±45° in a model experiment, specially suggested in this work, allows for visualization of the transverse controlled motion of the erythrocyte, which enables to claim about new possibilities for controlling microobjects in biology and medicine.

Opis:
The paper presents a theoretical model for calculating the optical forces caused by the density of spin and orbital momentum and optical torque, caused by the angular momentum typical for a circularly polarized beam or a circular component of an elliptically polarized beam. Total internal reflection at the plate–air interface implemented by the birefringent plate spattered with nanoparticles of gold creates the conditions for the allocation of the predominant action of the vertical spin of the evanescent wave, which has recently been predicted theoretically.

Opis:
The influence of different dental materials used for conserving reconstruction of teeth on the magnetic resonance imaging assessed on the basis of changes in NMR proton relaxation T1 of the physiological environment represented by the physiological salt solution has been studied. The dental materials studied varied in a wide range of chemical compositions: composites (Silux Plus made by 3M Dental, Tetric Cream made by Ivoclar-Vivadent), pH controlling composite (Ariston pHc made by Vivadent), hybrid glass ionomer (Vitremer made by 3M Dental), compomer (Hytac made by ESPE), amalgamate without the gamma phase (Septalloy made by Septodont), chemocured phosphate cement (Agatos made by Chema-Elektromet), phosphate cement with addition of silver (Argil made by Spora-Dental). The reference standard was a 0.9% physiological solution of NaCl. The relative deviations of the spin-lattice relaxation time vary from –18.5% to +24.0%. From the point of view of magnetic resonance imaging, the materials significantly disturbing the tomographic images are the amalgamate Septalloy-Septodont and glass ionomer Vitremer-3M Dental, while the composite Tetric Cream-Vivadent has insignificant effect.

Opis:
University spin-offs have idiosyncratic strengths in comparison to other new firms. However, evidence also shows that Polish university spin-offs have a low survival rate, and only a small percent of them grow into sustainable businesses. The purpose of this paper is to carry out an empirical study to determine the nature of barriers to the growth of Polish university spin-offs, in order to address the two major research questions considered by this paper: what are the major barriers to growth, and which combinations of these barriers have the greatest impact on the performance of the university spin-offs under study? Firstly, this paper attempts to explore these research questions through a literature review and pilot interviews, based on which a questionnaire was developed. Secondly, this study attempts to address the research questions through a fuzzy-set-theoretic approach by using a software package, such as fs/QCA- fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis. This paper identifies six key groups of barriers to the growth of university spin-offs in Poland, namely financial, competence, psychological, organizational, informational and formal barriers. Moreover, four alternative configurations of key groups of barriers to the growth of spin-offs that lead to low performance among the organizations examined are distinguished using fs/QCA. This problem is interesting not only from a scientific, but also a practical, point of view, pointing out the need for increased attention, not only from academic entrepreneurs themselves, but also for greater effort from universities and the government to cultivate university spin-offs. Most importantly, simultaneous action in all of these directions is necessary. The continuation of such research is also important, which will consider, on the one hand, a larger sample of firms, and, on the other hand, the results achieved so far and their re-conceptualization.

Opis:
The results of X-band electron paramagnetic resonance measurements of Mn2+ and Mn4+ ions in YAlO3 (YAP) crystals in the temperature range 100–300 K are presented. Additionally, we observe electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of unintentional impurities Fe3+ and Cr3+ in YAP crystals. The angular dependence for Mn ions in YAP crystals can be presented. We aim at obtaining a better insight into the spectroscopic properties of paramagnetic Mn centers and structural information about their nearest environment in YAP host and at determining the valence of manganese ion. In this paper we compare electron paramagnetic resonance spectra for Co and Mn ions in YAP crystals.
