Power delivery infrastructures are overstrained and suffer from overaged conditions, not only in the developed, but also in the more industrialized countries. The aim of the smart grid is to provide a more reliable and efficient electric power grid. Condition assessment is an essential and effective part of the reliability for electric grid components; also, it reflects the physical state of the electricity asset in a generation, transmission, distribution, and consumers sides. In this paper, condition assessment of electric grid assets will be discussed and illustrated within the context of smart grid principle. In addition, the proposed condition assessment architecture and the objective of condition assessment for smart grid equipment will be explored and analyzed. Moreover, the potential benefits of such smart system as compared to the traditional power system will be presented. This paper aims to add significant contribution to a smart grid theory.

Opis:
Smart grid (SG) is the solution to solve existing problems of energy security from generation to utilization. Examples of such problems are disruptions in the electric grid and disturbances in the transmission. SG is a premium source of Big Data. The data should be processed to reveal hidden patterns and secret correlations to extrapolate the needed values. Such useful information obtained by the so-called data analytics is an essential element for energy management and control decision towards improving energy security, efficiency, and decreasing costs of energy use. For that reason, different techniques have been developed to process Big Data. This paper presents an overview of these techniques and discusses their advantages and challenges. The contribution of this paper is building a recommender system using different techniques to overcome the most obstacles encountering the Big Data processes in SG. The proposed system achieves the goals of the future SG by (i) analyzing data and executing values as accurately as possible, (ii) helping in decision-making to improve the efficiency of the grid, (iii) reducing cost and time, (iv) managing operating parameters, (v) allowing predicting and preventing equipment failures, and (vi) increasing customer satisfaction. Big Data process enables benefits that were never achieved for the SG application.

Smart Grid is both a concept and a way to mitigate infrastructural deficiencies and counteract the effects of the growing demand for electrical energy. One of the ways ensuring an increase in power grid’s management efficiency is utilization of the latest communication solutions by use of IT technologies. Such solutions ensure reduced energy consumption and evened 24-hour loads, decreased losses and – thanks to automated energy balancing – increased transfer security. Such solutions will directly translate into increased efficiency of the entire power grid. The present article contains an introduction to smart power grids, perspectives for their development in Poland, as well as an extended discussion of related issues concerning security on the organizational level.

In recent years, electric power systems, in order to improve their efficiency, are increasingly using the latest innovations in the field of information and communication technologies (ICT) starting from wireless communication and fiber optics systems. Both used for industrial automation purposes and complex data analysis. Those systems, year by year, have made use of more and more sophisticated communication algorithms leading to automatic management of energy distribution process as well as undertaking the system resuscitation tasks as a result of failure. The use of ICT communication equipment in electric power systems is certainly a big advantage, but it also entails some safety issues. The traditional understanding of smart grid cyber security involves the general requirements (placed on existing systems) as well as specific solutions for detection and intrusion prevention (for individual parts of the system infrastructure). Implementation of security policy in management process of the power system, with means of modern technical of digital information transmission, will increase efficiency and reliability of those systems.
