Opis:
This comprehensive overview of the impacting factors on lithium-ion-battery’s (LIB) overall efficiency presents the most relevant influencing factors on a battery’s performance. Dissected into their respective short-term and long-term influences, the working principles behind the efficiency influencing factors are presented. With a strong focus on battery characterisation, charge-profiles and battery management systems (BMSs), the authors present results of their own practical research with a detailed literary analysis, allowing a broad coverage of the complex topic. Finally, the authors present a principle model that indicates the interactions be-tween the different involved components of the battery.

Opis:
The necessity to develop an optode array in order to probe the fetus oxygenation noninvasively regardless of the fetus position has been highlighted in previous literature. In this paper, a series of optical simulations are carried out to determine the best representation of optode array by using optical properties at systolic and diastolic states. The selection is based on the highest flux values accumulated at respective detectors. To accomplish the objective, a homogenous three-layer semi-infinite tissue model is implemented to represent the pregnant woman model. The geometry of the model as well as Monte Carlo simulation are carried out using commercial software, whereas the optical properties related to systolic and diastolic states are defined for all wavelengths. A statistical noise analysis is also introduced in order to find a sufficient number of rays to be launched into the optical tissue system.

Tuning of the numerical model is very important step during designing process. Correctly tuned model ensures proper evaluation of dynamic characteristics of vibrating object. This paper presets comparison of experimental modal analysis and theoretical numerical modal test of axial fan casing. Thanks to properly tuned model, it was possible to receive results of the numerical simulations similar to real test.

Opis:
In urban areas, the control of ground surface settlement is an important issue during shield tunnel-boring machine (TBM) tunneling. These ground movements are affected by many machine control parameters. In this article, a finite difference (FD) model is developed using Itasca FLAC-3D to numerically simulate the whole process of shield TBM tunneling. The model simulates important components of the mechanized excavation process including slurry pressure on the excavation face, shield conicity, installation of segmental lining, grout injection in the annular void, and grout consolidation. The analysis results from the proposed method are compared and discussed in terms of ground movements (both vertical and horizontal) with field measurements data. The results reveal that the proposed 3D simulation is sufficient and can reasonably reproduce all the operations achieved by the TBM. In fact, the results show that the TBM parameters can be controlled to have acceptable levels of surface settlement. In particular, it seems that moderate face pressure can reduce ground movement significantly and, most importantly, can prevent the occurrence of face-expected instability when the shield crosses very weak soil layers. The shield conicity has also an important effect on ground surface settlement, which can be partly compensated by the grout pressure during tail grouting. Finally, the injection pressure at the rear of the shield significantly reduces the vertical displacements at the crown of the tunnel and, therefore, reduces the settlement at the ground surface.

Opis:
Bones, the fundamental part of the skeleton, are constantly subjected to many biological processes including growth, feeding and remodelling. Remodelling causes changes in bone structure that may be difficult to notice on a day-to-day basis but become significant over the longer time span. It acts on the cancellous and cortical bone tissue, causing alterations in thickness and spatial arrangement in the first and alternations in pore size in the second. In healthy individuals such changes are a part of the natural bone remodelling process explained by Wolff’s law. However, the direction of such changes is difficult to predict in patients in various pathological states in which bone health is affected. Here, we present a method to generate a computer based geometric model of the bone structure based on the cancellous tissue structure images. As a result we obtained a geometric model of the structure corresponding to the physical model of the cancellous bone. Such a model can be used in computer simulation to predict the remodelling changes in the healthy and pathological bone structures.

Opis:
Upslope and downslope walking are basic activities necessary for normal daily living in community, and they impose greater joint load on the lower extremities than during level walking. Thus, the purpose of this study was to quantify the resultant and shear forces in the hip and knee joints during slope walking. Methods: Twelve healthy volunteers were evaluated when walking under level and 10° up- and downslope conditions. Three-dimensional gait analysis was conducted using a 7-camera optoelectronic motion analysis system combined with a force plate to measure ground reactive force. Joint forces in the hip and knee joints were estimated using musculoskeletal model simulation. Results: Results showed that the resultant hip force was increased significantly to 117.2% and 126.9%, and the resultant knee force was increased to 133.5% and 144.5% in up- and downslope walking, respectively, compared to that of level walking. Furthermore, increased shear force in the hip and knee joints was noted during both slope walking conditions. Conclusions: This information may be beneficial for therapists advising elderly people or patients with osteoarthrosis on an appropriate gait pattern, gait assistive devices, or orthoses according to their living environment.
