Opis:
The paper presents a method of measuring the sensitivity of modal birefringence to pressure in birefringent optical fibers, based on a Sagnac interferometer with a birefringent fiber. In this method, the pressure sensitivity of modal birefringence of the optical fiber is determined on the basis of the measurement of the pressure sensitivity of the Sagnac interferometer including the fiber being measured, and the measurement of the group modal birefringence of that fiber, which is also performed by using the Sagnac interferometer. Utilizing the above method, measurements were performed of the pressure sensitivity of modal birefringence of birefringent optical fibers: a photonic crystal fiber and a bow-tie fiber, in the wavelength range 1460–1600 nm. Presented are the results of these measurements and their comparison with the results obtained by using different methods for the same types of fibers.

In a previous work (Opt. Appl. 39(2), 2009, pp. 415–428) we established the characteristics that a computer-based contrast sensitivity function (CSF) measurement system has to be used in the opthalmological clinic. In order to obtain a generalized use of CSF in clinics and as a screening tool, the necessity to incorporate a normality range by age was also suggested. It will also be important to establish how many reference curves are necessary, because in the last decades, different ranges have been presented in the literature. In the present work, our purpose was to show how to distribute the observers in terms of the statistical variations of CSF as a function of age in a normal population of healthy eyes. We then evaluated the utility of these curves in the detection of vision problems and, finally, the possibility of using them as a screening tool considering a reduced number of spatial frequencies. We used a computer-based CSF measurement system to present sinusoidal gratings whose values range from 1 to 24 cycles per degree. Three different groups (control, clinical and non-clinical) of subjects were considered. From the statistical analysis we obtained two ranges of normality, based on significant differences that appear around the age of 50. As we were interested in evaluating if this separation could increase the sensitivity of the test, we also performed a series of measurements in a clinical environment. As an interesting possibility of usage of a vision test is screening, we also measured people in conditions relatively different to those found in laboratories or clinics. We observed that this division into two ranges allows a better discrimination, especially for young adults. Measurements show an improvement of 22% in the detection of vision anomalies.

The present study investigates the angular response and sensitivity of a surface plasmon resonance biosensor with metamaterial, by taking the advantage of the remarkable property of metamaterials. The proposed biosensor numerically shows that silver with a metamaterial layer enhances the sensitivity. The thickness of metamaterial and silver layer has been optimized. On comparing these results with a conventional surface plasmon resonance biosensor, it is observed that the sensitivity of the proposed biosensor is improved by introducing the metamaterial. The proposed biosensor has a sensitivity 6.3124 times higher than that of the conventional surface plasmon resonance sensor.

Opis:
In this paper, sensitivity enhancement of a nanocomposite-based optical fiber sensor with platinum nanoparticles is investigated. This optical fiber sensor is based on the surface plasmon resonance in the nanocomposite layer coating the core of optical fiber. A comparison is carried out for sensitivity between an optical fiber sensor based surface plasmon resonance with platinum layer and the one with nanocomposite layer. The nanocomposite layer consists of platinum nanoparticles with varying volume fraction which is arrayed in a host dielectric material of InN or TiO2. We show that the sensitivity of the sensor with a nanocomposite layer containing platinum nanoparticles is bigger than the sensitivity of the sensor with a platinum layer for all the values of refractive index of sample media. Also, the effect of the thickness of the nanocomposite layer and the volume fraction of platinum nanoparticles on the spectrum of the transmitted power has been investigated.

The encryption of image data is artful as compare to others due to some special characteristics such as entropy, contrast, the correlation between the pixels, intensity, and homogeneity. During encryption process, it is conventionally not easy to manage these characteristics with non-chaotic cryptosystems. Therefore for the sake of strong encryption algorithms, in last decades many cryptographers have presented invulnerable schemes for image encryption based on the chaotic maps. This manuscript aims to propose a strong encryption scheme based on a symmetric group of permutation advanced encryption standard (AES) substitution boxes and modified Chebyshev map. Principally, the secret key depends upon the parameters of Chebyshev map to create confusion in the main image and is encrypted by the scheme made from the S8 AES S-boxes and chaotic map. By this procedure, one can obtain an encrypted image that is entirely twisted. The results of analyses showed that the presented image encryption is strong and invulnerable.

This work discusses the fundamentals of designing deep excavation support by means of observational method. The effective tools for optimum designing with the use of the observational method are both inclinometric and geodetic monitoring, which provide data for the systematically updated calibration of the numerical computational model. The analysis included methods for selecting data for the design (by choosing the basic random variables), as well as methods for an on-going verification of the results of numeric calculations (e.g., MES) by way of measuring the structure displacement using geodetic and inclinometric techniques. The presented example shows the sensitivity analysis of the calculation model for a cantilever wall in non-cohesive soil; that analysis makes it possible to select the data to be later subject to calibration. The paper presents the results of measurements of a sheet pile wall displacement, carried out by means of inclinometric method and, simultaneously, two geodetic methods, successively with the deepening of the excavation. This work includes also critical comments regarding the usefulness of the obtained data, as well as practical aspects of taking measurement in the conditions of on-going construction works.

Opis:
Sensitivity analysis of parameters is usually more important than the optimal solution when it comes to linear programming. Nevertheless, in the analysis of traditional sensitivities for a coefficient, a range of changes is found to maintain the optimal solution. These changes can be functional constraints in the coefficients, such as good values or technical coefficients, of the objective function. When real-world problems are highly inaccurate due to limited data and limited information, the method of grey systems is used to perform the needed optimisation. Several algorithms for solving grey linear programming have been developed to entertain involved inaccuracies in the model parameters; these methods are complex and require much computational time. In this paper, the sensitivity of a series of grey linear programming problems is analysed by using the definitions and operators of grey numbers. Also, uncertainties in parameters are preserved in the solutions obtained from the sensitivity analysis. To evaluate the efficiency and importance of the developed method, an applied numerical example is solved.

We propose a design of series-connected one-dimensional photonic crystal nanofiber cavity sensor (1-D PC-NCS) and one-dimensional photonic crystal nanofiber bandgap filter (1-D PC-NBF). The proposed structure can get a single air mode for refractive index sensing with its extinction ratio of 58.64 dB. It filters out the high order mode and reduces the interaction between signals. By 3D FDTD, the calculated sensitivity is 848.18 nm/RIU (RIU – refractive index unit). Compared with general silicon on-chip nanobeam cavity, the sensitivity is increased by eight times. The additional 1-D PC-NBF will not change the sensitivity and the position of the resonance wavelength. Therefore, the new design we propose addresses the issue of crosstalk, and can be applied to ultra-high sensitivity index-based gas sensing and biosensing without the need for complicated coupling systems.

An ultrasonic sensor based on extrinsic Fabry–Pérot interference (EFPI) has been designed and demonstrated to detect the ultrasonic wave signal. The sensitivity and natural frequency of fiber Fabry–Pérot (F-P) sensor with different structure parameter have been simulated by COMSOL. The simulation results illustrate that the sensitivity is up to 1.737 nm/kPa and the natural frequency is 2.1 MHz, when the silica diaphragm thickness is 2 μm, the radius is 90 μm, and the cavity length is 18 μm. The most suitable parameters have been selected and the F-P sensor has been fabricated. When the ultrasonic signals with the frequencies of 40 kHz and 1.2 MHz are respectively applied to the sensor, the frequencies detected by the EFPI ultrasonic sensor are 39 kHz and 1.21 MHz based on a partial discharge detection experiment for the designed demodulation system. The experimental results show that the sensor can accurately detect ultrasonic signals. As an excellent platform for ultrasonic signal sensing, this EFPI ultrasonic sensing system has great potential applications in partial discharge detection field.

Opis:
A novel technology for the simultaneous and independent measurement of dual parameters is proposed and experimented. By using a single fiber Bragg grating half-pasted by 1C-LV epoxy under different curing conditions, the sensor structure is designed such that the reflective single-peak spectrum splits into a twin-peak spectrum, which makes the FBG spectrum form a natural spectral peak splitting bias. A measurement limitation exists in the FBG sensor packaging at room temperature, which can be solved by the high-temperature cured packaging method. To verify the validity of the theory and methodology, the experimental system is used. In the range from –1000 to +1000 με and from 35 to 75°C, the Bragg wavelength change is relative linear to the strain and temperature. The temperature and strain variations can be independently and simultaneously measured using the split peak, and the deviations of the FBG sensor are ±1°C and ±5 με, respectively. This single FBG sensor can realize dual-parameter measurement, which is valuable for narrow-space health monitoring.

In this paper, the performances of a wavelength interrogation-based optical fiber surface plasmon resonance sensor for hemoglobin (Hb) concentration is investigated by theoretical simulation. The proposed configuration incorporates optical fiber, 70 nm silver, 18 nm barium titanate (BaTiO3), and 2 nm zinc oxide. Simulation results show the sensor exhibits refractive index sensitivity of 4023 nm/RIU and concentration sensitivity of 10.0873 nm/(g∙dL), along with Hb concentration varying from 0 to 14 g/dL. This paper especially focuses on the influence of BaTiO3 on the performances of the proposed sensor with light wavelength ranging from 350 to 1000 nm. Comparison analysis indicates sandwiching 18 nm BaTiO3 between sensing layers not only enhances the concentration sensitivity by 30.14% but also decreases the nonlinear error of the sensor from 0.68% to 0.63%. For a wavelength accuracy of 0.1 nm, the proposed sensor can provide a resolution of 0.0099 g/dL for Hb concentration detection.

In this article, a circular photonic crystal fiber based chemical sensor has been presented where core region is designed with an array of elliptical holes. The proposed structure is numerically investigated by using a full vectorial finite element method. From the numerical results, it is observed that introducing an array of elliptical holes helps to obtain the high relative sensitivity and realizes a low confinement loss. In addition, the increase in the value of the diameter of holes in the innermost ring enhances the relative sensitivity. Moreover, the increase in the value of the diameter of holes in the outermost ring reduces the confinement loss. In this work, we have considered an industrially valuable chemical ethanol. Simulation results disclose that the highest relative sensitivity of proposed photonic crystal fiber is 29.25% for ethanol and the confinement loss is 7.68 × 10–7 dB/m at the wavelength 1.5 µm.

This paper is focused on neural models applied for estimation of state variables drive with elastic connection. Models that estimate speed of the load and shaft torque are analyzed. For calculation of weight coefficients of neural networks the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm was used. This stage of the whole design process was modified by application of the structure reduction of neural models (based on Local Relative Sensitivity Index). For this purpose significance factors of the connections were used. Prepared models of state variables have high precision of estimation for wide range of changes of reference speed and switching of the load, and also for changes of the parameters of two-mass system. Simulation results are confirmed by experimental tests.

In this work, using the two-dimensional finite difference time domain method, we are theoretically studying the optical properties of a two-dimensional photonic crystal biosensor based on silicon rods arranged as a square structure in an air bottom with two waveguides and a nanocavity. For this purpose, six different cells are infiltrated into the point defect. These six cells are Jurkat, HeLa, PC-12, MDA-MB-231, MCF-7, and basal cells. As a result, we have successfully detected cancer and benign cases of these cells through resonance peaks in the transmission spectrum. We evaluated the sensitivity, quality factor, detection limit, and figure of merit at different values for sensing region radius for optimization purposes. We report that we observed the maximum sensitivity of 1350 nm/RIU at 0.15 μm for the basal cell. Finally, the proposed biosensor can be a miniaturized structure with extreme sensitivity in cancer cell detection models.

This paper presents the use of an artificial neural network (NN) approach for predicting the muscle forces around the elbow joint. The main goal was to create an artificial NN which could predict the musculotendon forces for any general muscle without significant errors. The input parameters for the network were morphological and anatomical musculotendon parameters, plus an activation level experimentally measured during a flexion/extension movement in the elbow. The muscle forces calculated by the ‘Virtual Muscle System’ provide the output. The cross-correlation coefficient expressing the ability of an artificial NN to predict the “true” force was in the range 0.97 - 0.98. A sensitivity analysis was used to eliminate the less sensitive inputs, and the final number of inputs for a sufficient prediction was nine. A variant of an artificial NN for a single specific muscle was also studied. The artificial NN for one specific muscle gives better results than a network for general muscles. This method is a good alternative to other approaches to calculating of muscle force.
