Opis:
A high extinction ratio transverse magnetic (TM)-pass plasmonic waveguide polarizer has been designed and optimized. This device exploits two parallel TiN strips embedded in a silicon dioxide cladding to cut off the transverse electric (TE) polarization state, which is either reflected or absorbed, while the TM mode can pass through the main silicon waveguide with significant low losses. Given a device of 5 μm length, an extinction ratio as high as 60.7 dB and an insertion loss of 2.23 dB were achieved at the target wavelength of 1.55 μm. To our knowledge, this extinction ratio is one of the highest values ever reported. In the wavelength of 1.45–1.59 μm, the proposed device provides an optical bandwidth of 140 nm for an extinction ratio more than 30 dB and an insertion loss less than 3 dB. This device is relatively simple and is easier to be fabricated than other architectures that are found in the literature.

Opis:
In this paper, a fused-silica transmission grating used as a three-port beam splitter is designed by using the rigorous coupled-wave analysis, which is based on the sandwiched grating structure at the wavelength of 800 nm under normal incidence. Firstly, it is feasible to realize such a grating with the prescribed grating duty cycle and grating period. Next, high efficiency can be also achieved for both TE and TM polarizations. Moreover, the aspect ratio of the grating depth to the ridge width can be improved, which is significant for practical applications. At last, the three-port beam splitter is designed with a covering layer on the surface, which can extend its life service.

Opis:
The importance of non-deterministic polynomial (NP) problems in real world scenarios has compelled researchers to consider simple ways of finding approximate solutions to these problems in polynomial time. Minimum vertex cover is an NP complete problem, where the objective is to cover all the edges in a graph with the minimal number of vertices possible. The maximal independent set and maximal clique problems also belong to the same class. An important property that we have analyzed while considering various approaches to find approximate solutions to the minimum vertex cover problem (MVC) is that solving MVC directly can result in a bigger error ratio. We propose a new approximation algorithm for the minimum vertex cover problem called vertex cover using a maximum independent set (VCUMI). This algorithm works by removing the nodes of a maximum independent set until the graph is an approximate solution of MVC. Based on empirical results, it can be stated that VCUMI outperforms all competing algorithms presented in the literature. Based on all the benchmarks used, VCUMI achieved the worst case error ratio of 1.033, while VSA, MDG and NOVAC-1 gave the worst error ratios of 1.583, 1.107 and 1.04, respectively.

A theoretical analysis method of the solution chemistry characteristic of Cu(II) at various pH values was developed. Using such method, the existence form of Cu species and their proportions in aqueous solution can be clearly determined. After that, the copper adsorption and ion exchange ratio (E) during the copper activation of sphalerite were investigated. The results indicated that the copper activation of sphalerite can be divided into two stages, i.e., the fast activation stage (t ≤4 min) and slow activation stage (t >4 min). The general form of the copper adsorption rate was determined as ΓCu=K1ln(t) +Γ1, which is confirmed by the data fitting of the fast activation stage. The lower activation pH results in higher ion exchange efficiency for Cu substituting Zn. For a strong acid pH of 4.1, the E maintains about 1:1 in the entire activation time range and is not dependent on the activation time. However, the value of E is greater than 1 under weak acidic (pH=6.2) and alkaline (pH=9.1) pH conditions and it significantly depends on the activation time. For such conditions, E decreases with increase in the activation time, which supports the ion exchange mechanism, but within short activation time, it is not a 1:1 ion exchange process.

Opis:
This paper presents results of a series of undrained monotonic compression tests on loose sand reinforced with geotextile mainly to study the effect of confining stress on the mechanical behaviour of geotextile reinforced sand. The triaxial tests were performed on reconstituted specimens of dry natural sand prepared at loose relative density (Dr = 30%) with and without geotextile layers and consolidated to three levels of confining pressures 50, 100 and 200 kPa, where different numbers and different arrangements of reinforcement layers were placed at different heights of the specimens (0, 1 and 2 layers). The behaviour of test specimens was presented and discussed. Test results showed that geotextile inclusion improves the mechanical behaviour of sand, a significant increase in the shear strength and cohesion value is obtained by adding up layers of reinforcement. Also, the results indicate that the strength ratio is more pronounced for samples which were subjected to low value of confining pressure. The obtained results reveal that high value of confining pressure can restrict the sand shear dilatancy and the more effect of reinforcement efficiently.

One of the most important elements of road construction is its substructure, which constitutes the base on which the next layers of road are placed. Mixture of crushed-stone aggregate is very often used as material for substructure. The most frequently used type of aggregate is magma rocks, due to its good physicalmechanical properties. However, it is not always available, so it is substituted by sandstone or even concreto rubble aggregates. The bearing ratio CBR is a parameter determining the suitability of a certain aggregate for road substructure. It is also one of the most popular quality tests of aggregate as it does not require complex apparatus. This paper analyses the results of physical and geotechnical tests with particular focus on CBR bearing ratio of crushed aggregates and their application as substructure for road construction. There has also been an attempt to find the correlation between CBR bearing ratio and other physical and geometrical properties.

Opis:
A three-dimensional finite element technique was used to analyse single pile lateral response subjected to pure lateral load. The main objective of this study is to assess the influence of the pile slenderness ratio on the lateral behaviour of single pile. The lateral single pile response in this assessment considered both lateral pile displacement and lateral soil resistance. As a result, modified p-y curves for lateral single pile response were improved when taking into account the influence lateral load magnitudes, pile cross sectional shape and flexural rigidity of the pile. The finite element method includes linear elastic, Mohr-Coulomb and 16-nodes interface models to represent the pile behaviour, soil performance and interface element, respectively. It can be concluded that the lateral pile deformation and lateral soil resistance because of the lateral load are always influenced by lateral load intensity and soil type as well as a pile slenderness ratio (L/D). The pile under an intermediate and large amount of loading (in case of cohesionless soil) has more resistance (low lateral displacement) than the pile embedded on the cohesion soil. In addition, it can be observed that the square-shaped pile is able to resist the load by about 30% more than the circular pile. On the other hand, pile in cohesionless soil was less affected by the change in EI compared with that in cohesive soil.

Opis:
This research involves a fixed wavelength and dual-wavelength ratio temperature measurement for helical long-period grating. There are two resonant dips near 1475 and 1520 nm, with the pitch length 782 μm. The temperature sensitivity of resonance wavelengths is about 0.06 nm/°C. Both theoretical simulation and experiment results show that the transmission of a fixed wavelength linearly changes with the temperature. It has a high application value for measuring temperature. Besides, the dual-wavelength ratio is studied to eliminate the influence of light source. The temperature sensitivity of transmission intensity ratio of I1469.6nm/I0 and I1469.6nm/I1526.5nm are about 1.0076/°C and 0.0155/°C, respectively, so the dual-wavelength ratio is more practical. And the 0.0155 times intensity change could be much more easily measured than the 0.06 nm wavelength change for each degree Celsius. So the dual-wavelength ratio of the helical long-period gratings is very suitable for temperature sensors.

Ensuring the safety of existing structures is an important issue when planning and executing adjacent new foundation pit excavations. Hence, understanding the stress state conditions experienced by the soil element behind a retaining wall at a given location during different excavation stages has been a key observational modelling aspect of the performance of excavations. By establishing and carrying out sophisticated soil–structure interaction analyses, stress paths render clarity on soil deformation mechanism. On the other hand, column-type soft ground treatment has recently got exceeding attention and practical implementation. So, the soil stress–strain response to excavation-induced disturbances needs to be known as well. To this end, this paper discusses the stress change and redistribution phenomena in a treated ground based on 3D numerical analyses. The simulation was verified against results from a 1 g indoor experimental test conducted on composite foundation reinforced with long and short cement–fly ash–gravel (CFG) pile adjacent to a moving rigid retaining wall. It was observed that the stress path for each monitoring point in the shallow depth undergoes a process of stress unloading at various dropping amounts of principal stress components in a complex manner. The closer the soil element is to the wall, the more it experiences a change in principal stress components as the wall movement progresses; also, the induced stress disturbance weakens significantly as the observation point becomes farther away from the wall. Accordingly, the overall vertical load-sharing percentage of the upper soil reduces proportionally.

An increase in the value of the hamstring-to-quadriceps (H/Q) ratio with an increase in angular velocity may effectively prevent injuries of the back of the thigh. Previous studies have found that the conventional H/Q ratio was unaltered along with an increasing angular velocity in females. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationships between the conventional H/Q ratio and angular velocity in a group of female soccer players. Methods: The study was carried out on a group of 16 female soccer players (age: 20.7 ± 3.9 years, body height: 166.1 ± 5.8 cm, body mass: 58.4 ± 6.2 kg, training experience: 8.8 ± 4.1 years). Measurements of peak torque of extensors and flexors of the knee joint under static conditions and under isokinetic conditions (at angular velocities of 30°/s, 60°/s, 90°/s and 120°/s) were carried out using a Biodex dynamometer. Results: There was a statistically significant increase in the conventional H/Q ratio with an increase in angular velocity. These differences occurred between measurements at angular velocities of 0°/s and 30°/s, and 30°/s and 60°/s. Conclusions: As previously found for males, an increase in conventional H/Q ratio with increased angular velocity was also present in this group of female players. This phenomenon should reduce the number of injuries of the muscles of back of the thigh. Coaches should pay attention to increasing the level of strength in the group of knee joint flexor muscles so as to make the value of the H/Q ratio appropriately high and increasing with increasing angular velocity.

The air-to-pulp ratio and bias factor are important operating parameters in the Jameson flotation cell. These parameters have significant effect on micro-events taking place between particles and bubbles in flotation, and hence on flotation performance. In this study, the possibilities of obtaining a Cu-Zn rich bulk concentrate from complex sulphide ore from the Cayeli region (Turkey) were investigated using the lab-scale Jameson cell. The effect of air-to-pulp ratio and bias factor on flotation recovery were also studied. The ore has problematic flotation behaviour due to very fine liberation size and oxidation. The results showed that the Cu-Zn rich bulk concentrate can be obtained from the ore with satisfactory grade and recovery. It was determined that the air-to-pulp ratio and bias factor have significant effect on the flotation recovery. The optimum values of air-to-pulp ratio and bias factor in flotation of rather fine sized minerals were determined to be within the range of 1-1.5 and 0.70-0.95, respectively.

The instability of saturated granular soils in field conditions generates drastic collapse in terms of runoff deformation because of its failing to sustain naturally applied loading conditions such as earthquakes, wave actions and vibrations. The objective of this laboratory investigation is to study the effects of the depositional methods, overconsolidation ratio (OCR) and confining pressure on the undrained instability shear strength of medium dense (Dr = 52%) sand-silt mixtures under static loading conditions. For this purpose, a series of undrained monotonic triaxial tests were carried out on reconstituted saturated silty sand samples with fines content ranging from 0% to 40%. Three confining pressures were used (P’c = 100, 200 and 300 kPa) in this research. The sand-silt mixture samples were prepared using two depositional methods, dry funnel pluviation (DFP) and wet deposition (WD), and subjected to two OCRs (1 and 2). The obtained instability lines and friction angles indicate that the funnel pluviated samples exhibit strain hardening compared to the wet deposited samples and that normally consolidated and overconsolidated wet deposited clean sandy samples were very sensitive to static liquefaction. The test results also indicate that the instability friction angle increases with the increase in the OCR expressing soil dilative character tendency increase. The instability friction angle decreases with the increase in the fines content for DFP and the inverse tendency was observed in the case of WD.

The purpose of the present study was to compare the prediction performances of three statistical methods, namely, information value (IV), weight of evidence (WoE) and frequency ratio (FR), for landslide susceptibility mapping (LSM) at the east of Constantine region. A detailed landslide inventory of the study area with a total of 81 landslide locations was compiled from aerial photographs, satellite images and field surveys. This landslide inventory was randomly split into a testing dataset (70%) for training the models, and the remaining (30%) was used for validation purpose. Nine landslide-related factors such as slope gradient, slope aspect, elevation, distance to streams, lithology, distance to lineaments, precipitation, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and stream density were used in the landslide susceptibility analyses. The inventory was adopted to analyse the spatial relationship between these landslide factors and landslide occurrences. Based on IV, WoE and FR approaches, three landslide susceptibility zonation maps were categorized, namely, “very high, high, moderate, low, and very low”. The results were compared and validated by computing area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC). From the statistics, it is noted that prediction scores of the FR, IV and WoE models are relatively similar with 73.32%, 73.95% and 79.07%, respectively. However, the map, obtained using the WoE technique, was experienced to be more suitable for the study area. Based on the results, the produced LSM can serve as a reference for planning and decision-making regarding the general use of the land.

This paper studies the relationship between transmission intensity and strain based on tapered long-period fiber grating at a fixed wavelength. In experiments, tapered long-period fiber grating was prepared by the electric melting method. Experimental results show that two resonance peaks appeared at 1482 and 1537 nm, respectively. Here is the elaboration of the relationship between the resonant wavelength and the strain, its wavelength-strain sensitivity is 20 pm/με, and the linearity was negative. Then our next study was about the relationship between transmission intensity and strain at a fixed wavelength. The results show that the transmission intensity at a fixed wavelength is related to the exponent with strain. The coupled-mode theory is applied to simulate the relationship between fixed wavelength and strain. The simulation results matched the experimental results. Two fixed wavelength transmission intensity ratio was used, and the ratio showed a linear relationship with the strain, and the slope is –0.018 dB/με. Therefore, within the 0.01% resolution of our detector, we could resolve a 0.16 με strain change. We can select the appropriate light source and detector to achieve higher measurement accuracy. Thus, there is a great potential in fiber grating strain sensors.

This article presents the results of examining selected factors co-occurring with high fertility rates in developed countries. Selected OECD countries at a similar stage of demographic development have been subjected to analysis. Employing cluster analysis, the selected developed countries have also been identified according to the type of adopted family policy. It has been found that the developed countries which spend more on the family policy concerning GDP are generally characterised by higher fertility rates than those which spend less. In the light of those findings, the family-policy expenditures which allow women to reconcile professional work with raising children turned out to be particularly important. The fertility rate has also been found to correlate with labour market rates, with the level of women’s professional activity in particular. Moreover, in the developed countries the relatively high fertility rate is accompanied by low rates of young people who do not work or attend school and are not in vocational training, as well as a high rate of extramarital births.
