Opis:
The authors investigated sorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions on selected natural wastes: sunflower hulls, walnut shells and plum stones. The chemical and physical structure of the surface of these sorbents was determined using infrared spectrometry and scanning electron microscopy. The most favourable physicochemical parameters of the sorption processes were also defined. The sorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions was described according to the Langmuir and Freundlich models. It has been shown that the adsorbents studied can be effectively used in removing heavy metals from aqueous solutions. The sunflower hulls have the highest sorption capacity for Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions. It is equal to 36.93 mg/g for the Pb(II) ions and 19.93 mg/g Cd(II) ions. The calculated values of thermodynamic functions indicate a spontaneous (ΔGº< 0) and exothermic (ΔHº< 0) nature of the sorption processes. A participation of ion exchange in these processes is significant. Desorption tests confirm that the adsorbed heavy metals can be recovered and the sorbent materials after regeneration can be reused.

Opis:
The bioavailability of toxic heavy metalsfor organisms depends mainly on the soil physicochemical properties, i.e. type and granulometric composition, pH value, redox potential, individual fractions content and microorganisms presence. The addition of artificial fertilizers rich in humic substances or polyacrylamide soil flocculants may also affect the content of easily absorbed heavy metal forms. Due to their chelating properties, the added substances can bind metal ions in the form of complexes characterized by low mobility in soil environment. As a consequence, the immobilization process takes place, which is a desirable phenomenon for organism health. The aim of the study was to determine the structure of electrical double layer formed on the kaolinite surface in the mixed system of cationic polyacrylamide and lead(II) cations. The influence of cationic PAM presence on the Pb(II) ions sorption on the kaolinite surface as well as heavy metal ion addition on the polymer adsorbed amount on the same clay mineral were studied. The adsorption and electrokinetic properties of studied kaolinite/CT PAM/Pb(II) systems were determined based on the spectrophotometric study, zeta potential measurements as well as potentiometric titration.

Opis:
The preparation of cementing admixture from tailings and co-solidification of Pb2+ with cement is a green way to realize the resource utilization of tailings and treatment of the lead-containing wastewater. In this paper, the tungsten tailings were activated in different ways, and the mechanical properties of the tungsten tailings-cement solidified body with different activation systems and the solidification behavior of Pb2+ were studied. The phase and microstructure of the hydrated product were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM and EDS. The results showed that the curing effect of Pb2+ was obviously different of different activation systems, and the curing effect of the solidified body of the ternary composite activation system (TCAS) was the best, second only to the pure cement system (PCS). Different activation methods have a significant impact on the mechanical properties of the solidified body. With the increase of the Pb2+ content, the compressive strength of the solidified body gradually decreased, the Pb2+ leaching concentration gradually increased; with the extension of the curing age, the compressive strength gradually increased, and the Pb2+ leaching concentration gradually decreased. In particular, the compressive strength of the 28d solidified body was 31.43 MPa and the leaching concentration of Pb2+ was only 0.38 mg/L when the Pb2+ content was 5%. The phase, microstructure and EDS results of the hydration products showed that Pb2+ was mainly solidified in the C-S-H gel.

Opis:
The effect of lead ions on the flotation activation of tantalum niobium ore (TNO) was studied by micro-flotation, adsorption capacity experiments, solution chemical composition calculations, and infrared spectral analysis. The experimental demonstrated that the combined collector of salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA) and ammonium dibutyl dithiophosphate (ADDP) resulted in a strong collection capacity for TNO in the presence of lead ions. The solution chemistry calculations determined that the dominant source of lead ions in the aqueous solution was $Pb(OH)^+$ at a pH of 8, which was conducive to the adsorption and interaction of SHA and ADDP anions. In the lead ion activation system, the combined reagent co-adsorbed onto the TNO surface, causing a large negative shift in the zeta potential. The co-adsorption mechanism of the combined collector consisted of complex chemisorption between SHA and the TNO surface active particles, while the main adsorption of ADDP is physisorption.

Opis:
Phytochelatins (PCs) exist widely in plants and are closely related to plant resistance to heavy metals (HMs). Glutathione (GSH) and nonprotein thiols (NPTs) are the major components of PCs. This study investigates the role of the PCs of Cladophora rupestris in Pb2+ accumulation and detoxification. The distribution of Pb2+ in the PCs of C. rupestris was studied. FTIR and XPS are used to characterize the chelating power of Pb2+ with PCs in C.rupestris. The curve fitting of the secondary protein structure is used to identify the functional groups with Pb2+. Results showed that the content of Pb2+ in the PCs of C. rupestris increased with an increase in Pb2+ stress. Pb content increased to 352 and 314 mg/kg in NPTs and GSH, respectively, when Pb stress concentration reached 7.5 mg/dm3 . The Pb2+ fraction of C. rupestris PCs reached a maximum of 10.8 and 9.3% in NPTs and GSH, respectively. The Pb2+ uptake by GSH and NPTs was 40–48% and 52–60%, respectively. Pb2+ bound with the PCs of C. rupestris, forming complexes that contained Pb–OOC, Pb–C=O, CO–Pb, –N=Pb, Pb–NH2, Pb–O, Pb–N–, Pb–C–, Pb–S, and Pb2+ with multiple groups of PCs as bridging ligand atoms.

Opis:
A biconical dense medium cyclone (BDMC) was applied to reject the gangue from a low-grade Pb-Zn sulfide ore for the first time. Based on mineralogy and heavy liquid separation tests, it was found that the rejection of gangue by the BDMC prior to grinding and flotation was promising. The results revealed that the particle size clearly affected the heavy liquid separation process. The effects of several parameters, such as medium specific gravity (SG), spigot diameter, tilt angle, cone angle and medium/ore mass ratio, on the yield of floats and on the metal recoveries in the floats were examined and the optimal parameters were determined. The results showed that 51.22% of floats were obtained with a lead recovery of 7.92% and a zinc recovery of 12.50%. The extended tests were further carried out with the BDMC being capable of throughputs about 3 t/h, which verified the results obtained in the laboratory experiments. The use of this equipment to pre-treat the refractory ore is promising.

Opis:
Mass balance of selected heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Pb, Hg, Zn, Cd) released from waste into leachate during 8 years of landfill exploitation has been calculated. The average release of all analyzed heavy metals did not exceed 1.7%. Heavy metals released in the largest quantities were Cr (0.025 –1.685%), Hg (0.033–1.540%) and Cd (0.082–0.701%). Release of Pb, Cu, Zn was 0.008–0.152%; 0.012–0.085% and 0.007–0.152%, respectively. Cr and Hg do not form an insoluble sulfide precipitate and that is why they are released in a larger amount. Cd and Pb concentrations are positively correlated with the amount of the atmospheric precipitation and the amount of leachates, which means that infiltrating rainfall can leach out these metals from waste. Favorable conditions for leaching of these metals are probably a result of their precipitation as carbonates. A strong correlation between Cu, Zn, and Cr indicates they do not precipitate as carbonates and further they can be subject to desorption processes. In the case of Cu, Zn, Cr and Hg, a positive correlation with the amount of deposited waste was also observed.
