Opis:
The environmental impact over natural water systems, both marine and land, of the sewage is minimized with the treatment at Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs), but these facilities also generate environmental impacts during the construction period and during the operation period. A review of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process of WWTPs in Spain through the analysis of records of decision (RODs) between 2000 and 2016 has been performed in this work. The major environmental impacts during the construction period are noise, land use and disturbance of the air and water’s quality. During the operation period, the major environmental impacts are noise, odors from the depuration process and the visual impact of the facilities. About the EIA process, results show the processing time is too long, scoping phase has a success rate about 57.2% and regional public administrations are the most participative, both at scoping phase and at public participation phase. In general, public participation during period of exhibition is very low, in twelve of the RODs nobody submitted any report. The role of environmental project manager and the work environmental journal must be strengthened.

Opis:
Production of cast-off tyres and ways of dealing with this waste have been analysed. Possible ways of processing cast-off tyres such as "use as fuel" and "tyre crushing" have been compared in terms of their environmental impacts. The presented research is ecobalance and despite using the knowledge of LCA method, the method itself according to ISO standards is not applied. Use for energy ("use as fuel" process) was assessed as more environmentally efficient, i.e. with lower environmental impacts than "tyre crushing".

Opis:
In recent years, we have witnessed very frequent natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, storms and similar. In most cases, disasters are caused by geological factors, especially geobarriers. Geobarriers threaten the life and works of man or reduce the effectiveness of the construction and operation of technical works, or harm the environment by negative anthropogenic influences. An important task in assessing the technical and environmental aspects of particular engineering activity is to assess the impact of constructions on the production and protection of the environment. The important part of the environment is the geological environment. In this paper, we give an overview of geological factors of the environment and the way how they are illustrated in the engineering-geological maps made in Slovakia.

Opis:
In recent years, laptops have become very commonly used, causing a significant environmental impact. In Poland about 2 million portable computers are sold every year. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a tool which evaluates environmental impacts associated with a product throughout its life. In this paper, a screening life cycle assessment for a personal computer - Actina laptop, assembled, used and disposed in Poland was performed. Values for eleven impact categories were provided with the application of the Eco-indicator 99 method, expressing the significance of the burden on the environment. For the whole life cycle, the most significant stage is the use phase, due to electricity consumption (over 60% of all environmental impacts) followed by the manufacturing of the product with over 37% of the share.

Opis:
Over the past ten years, the automobile manufacturing basis has shifted to Thailand, thus transforming the country into an automobile industrial hub in Asia. An integral part of this industry, lead acid battery manufacturing has exhibited tremendous growth with increasing trends toward new manufacturing technology. This research aimed to study life cycle assessments of lead-acid automobile battery manufactured in Thailand by comparing conventional batteries with calcium-maintenance free batteries. Global warming and acidification are the largest environmental impacts associated with both battery types. Changing from conventional batteries to calcium-maintenance free batteries is able to reduce environmental impact by approximately 28% due to longer usage life and reduced utilization of manufacturing resources and energy. The greenhouse gases and acidification caused by one conventional battery amounted to 102 kg CO 2 and 0.94 kg SO2, respectively. These amounts decrease to 72 kg CO2 and 0.56 kg S02, respectively, when calcium-maintenance free technology is used. Raw material procurement is found to have the greatest environmental impact, followed by product usage. In this study, the information on environmental impact is incorporated with MET matrix principles to propose guidelines for environmental improvement throughout the battery life cycle.

Opis:
Multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) was used to make comparative analysis of projects or heterogeneous measures for prioritization criteria and subcriteria simultaneously in a complex situation. The aim of this paper is to determine the alternatives and the sensitivity of main factors affecting water and energy consumption as well as environmental impact in a recycled paper manufacturing by using analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The AHP enables one to consider all the elements of decision process in a model, and to compare criteria and subcriteria of the model to find the best alternative. The AHP technique is applied through specific software package with user-friendly interfaces called Expert Choice. The results indicated that reduction of water consumption is the most important alternative for sustainable development in a recycled paper mill in Iran. Also, good housekeeping is the most sensitive criterion affecting the alternatives. The paper illustrates how the AHP method can help industrial management to overcome the energy usage and environmental impact in the manufacture.

Opis:
Uncontrolled methane release from clathrates may intensify global warming, causes deoxygenation and changes of pH of oceanic water, prompt tsunami and other hazards. On the other hand, it can be a great source of unconventional fossil fuels in the future, when conventional sources will be depleted and renewable sources not enough developed. The problem is how to ensure its safe exploitation. Methane clathrate breakdown, environmental impacts and feedback between them are presented and possible commercial methods of methane exploitation are compared. Finally, a selected method of methane clathrate exploitation that minimalizes environmental hazards is proposed. Among possible methods such as thermal stimulation, depressurization, inhibitor injection and gas exchange, only the latter one is ecologically friendly and can diminish climate warming with simultaneous CO2 sequestration.

Opis:
Two heat pump systems with the highest energy performance indicators were chosen for an analysis. Those most efficient systems for heating and cooling are ground source heat pumps (GSHP) and the exhaust air heat pumps (EAHP). Consequently, two cases (case A and case B) with different pump configurations were related to a reference case R represented by gas-fired boilers covering heating needs and compression refrigeration units ensuring cooling needs. Technical assessment in the form of coefficients of performance as well as primary energy ratings were completed. An environmental impact taking into account CO2, SO2 and NOx emissions of analysed heat pump systems was also evaluated.
