Opis:
An extracellular substance extracted from the bacterial strain Rhodococcus opacus was used as a template for calcium carbonate precipitation from CaCl2 and Na2CO3 solutions at 25 and 37 °C. Obtained crystals were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. Kinetics of precipitation was investigated by conductivity measurements. The obtained results show that the used biopolymer does not affect the crystal structure but acts as a nucleation centers leading to the formation of calcite crystals with the regular size. This effect is concentration dependent i.e. the EPS concentration increase causes the crystal size decreases, and is greater if calcium chloride solution if mixed with EPS 15 min before the addition of sodium carbonate solution. The temperature increase strengthens this effect.

Opis:
In this study, the role of polymer in precipitation has been examined by studying the effect of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) on the formation of calcium carbonate particles. The CaCO3 particles were characterized by several techniques, such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, and particle size distribution analysis. In the absence of polymer, the mixing of reagents in an aqueous solution led to the formation of calcite crystals. Introduction of poly(ethylene glycol) molecules reduced the rate of crystallization process, and the effect was concentration dependent. In the presence of 0.05, 0.1, and 0.5 % of PEG, after 5 minutes of precipitation initiation, vaterite microspheres appeared in the system and which were transformed into calcite crystals after 24 hours. The calcium carbonate obtained with PEG was characterized by smaller sized particles in comparison with the ones without polymer.

The effects of $Ca^{2+}$ and $SO_4^{2-}$ on the flotation behaviour of fluorite with sodium oleate as a collector and the underlying mechanism by which these effects were investigated via micro-flotation experiments, solution chemistry calculations, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results indicated that the addition of $SO_4^{2-}$ and $Ca^{2+}$ inhibited fluorite flotation and the inhibition effect was increased by the addition of pH. This was mainly due to the increase of the sulphate-containing components in the solution and the adsorption of $SO_4^{2-}$ on the surface of fluorite. With the increase of pH, the alkalinity of the solution increases, OH- and more $SO_4^{2-}$ are further adsorbed on the fluorite surface, thereby reducing the recovery of fluorite flotation.

Opis:
Bulk flotation is usually used in the flotation of Cu-Fe sulfide ore, and the subsequent concentrate is difficult to be separated because the minerals have adsorbed the collector. In this paper, flotation tests showed that calcium hypochlorite (Ca(ClO)2) had a stronger depression effect on pyrite pre-adsorbed sodium butyl xanthate (SBX), while having a negligible depressive effect on chalcopyrite. A copper concentrate with Cu grade of 33.32% and Cu recovery of 94.47% could be obtained from flotation tests of mixed minerals. The depression performance and mechanism of Ca(ClO)2 were studied by contact angle measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses, the results suggested that Ca(ClO)2 can decomposes SBX on the pyrite surface and oxidizes the mineral surface to form hydrophilic substances, which enhances the hydrophilicity of the pyrite surface. In contrast, Ca(ClO)2 has little effect on chalcopyrite pre-adsorbed SBX, the possible depression model is discussed.

Opis:
Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is the most widely used filler material in paper, paint, plastic, food, ceramic, cosmetic, medicine and other industries. In the present paper, precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) has been produced from waste marble powder (WMP) by the Calcination-Dissolution-Precipitation (CDP) method. Calcination, dissolution and precipitation experiments were carried out under various conditions including : calcination temperature (800, 850, 900, 950 and 1000 °C), dissolution time (2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 min) and precipitation time (2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0, 12.5 and 15.0 min). Then, XRF, XRD, SEM, particle size, whiteness, brightness and yellowness analyses were performed for the characterization of the produced PCC materials. The analyses showed that the precipitate was mainly micrometer-sized (d50 = 1.682 μm) rhombohedral calcium carbonate crystals with 54.5% CaO. The whiteness, brightness and yellowness tests of the precipitates, conducted by Datacolor Elrepho 450x spectrometer, were determined to be 91.28, 98.2 and 1.99%, respectively. It was finally concluded that the produced PCC material reasonably meets Turkish Standards (TS 11653/1995) and can be used in paper industry.

Calcium carbonate is used as an additive in the production of paper and some other production processes. The aim of this study was to determine the chances of the calcite sample to be mechanically cleaned of impurities, so that the material can become commercially interesting, primarily to be sold to the paper and other-related industries. A mineralogical petrographic investigation carried out on a sample of calcite showed that an unfavorable impurity is, in particular, graphite – which is otherwise fairly easily to remove by flotation. Flotation was performed with samples of different particle size. The purpose of this was to find an optimal particle size for carrying out the flotation. In order to achieve an effective flotation results it is first necessary to achieve a proper liberation of grains. The second part of the study was to explore the optimal sequence of treatment procedures for tested calcite, using milling, flotation, and sedimentation.

Opis:
Quartz is, in most cases, the major gangue mineral found in the iron ores. Although it can be activated by calcium at strong alkaline pH, quartz nevertheless, reports to the concentrate with Fe when the iron ores contain siderite. It causes a poor concentrate grade and separation between quartz and iron minerals. The effect of siderite on reverse anionic flotation of quartz from hematite was studied in our previous investigations. In this work, the effect of siderite dissolution on the quartz recovery in the froth product and the effect of pH, ions and temperature on siderite dissolution were investigated. Microflotation, PHREEQC simulation, solution chemistry calculation and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) measurements were conducted. It was observed that the dissolved species of siderite exhibited negative impact on quartz flotation. This influence became weak to some extent by either stripping the dissolved species or shortening dissolution time. Siderite was easily dissolved in the presence of calcium ion under strong alkaline conditions and its solubility increased with increasing the calcium ion concentrate and temperature. When the calcium ion was added as an activator of quartz under strong alkaline conditions (pH>9.96), calcium existed mainly in the CaCO3 precipitation form according to the solubility rule in the presence of siderite. This form could adsorb onto quartz surfaces and further the chemical reaction between starch and quartz was monitored by FTIR measurements. This study provides a further supplement for previous study. A potential strategy is suggested that finding a collector used at low temperature or flotation under neutral (or weak alkaline) medium is helpful to the reverse flotation of iron ores containing siderite.

Opis:
Naturally, most of the cassiterite co-exists with sparingly soluble calcite, which makes it difficult to be fully utilized. Due to the adsorption of calcium ions dissolved from calcite, surface properties of cassiterite and its floatability can be influenced. Adsorption tests show calcium ions can adsorb on cassiterite surface. In the presence of Ca2+, the zeta potentials of cassiterite shift to more positive values and the isoelectric point of cassiterite increases from pH 4.4 to pH 4.9. XPS results show that after calcium ions treatment, a strong calcium spectral peak at 347.65 eV is detected on the cassiterite surface and the chemical circumstance of oxygen atoms is changed. The presence of Ca2+ can significantly depressed the flotation behavior of cassiterite with salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA) as collector. Its recovery is decreased by 26.03% compared to that without Ca2+ at SHA dosage of 8.0×10-4 mol/dm3. When increasing SHA concentration to 9.0×10-4 mol/dm3 and above, the depression effect is partly compensated and the recovery rises by about 20%. Contact angle values of cassiterite measured by the bubble method correspond well to the flotation performance. Hence the depression mechanism of Ca2+ in cassiterite flotation can be interpreted in two aspects: 1) the consumption of SHA due to complexation reactions in pulp; 2) a decrease of effective adsorption site for SHA on cassiterite because of the adsorption of Ca2+.

Opis:
Depression of pyrite in a low-alkaline system has sparked soaring interests for the multi-metal sulfide minerals flotation recently. This study investigates effects of combined depressants (Ca(ClO)2 and CaO) on pyrite flotation with butyl xanthate (KBX). Micro-flotation experiments indicate that the addition of 200 mg/L combined depressants (a mass ratios of CaO to Ca(ClO) 2 of 2:3) and 1.0×10−3 mol/L KBX at pH 9.5 can effectively depresses the flotation of pyrite, and a minimum pyrite recovery rate of 12.5% is obtained. Basic thermodynamic evaluation results confirm the participation of Ca(ClO) 2 significantly decrease the negative Gibbs free energies of pyrite oxidation reaction. Besides, the calcium species (Ca(OH) 2, Ca2+ and Ca(Cl) 2) will spontaneously transform into CaCO3,and it is the ultimate dominant calcium species in the CO32- system. Density functional theory (DFT) results indicate that CaCO3 can chemically adsorb onto the pyrite surface with an adsorption energy of –671.13 kJ/mol. The O1 and Ca atoms mainly contribute to the bonding process and are responsible for the stable adsorption of CaCO3. ToF-SIMS results provide strong evidence that the combined depressants increase the amount of hydrophilic species and decrease dixanthogen adsorption onto the pyrite surface. The thickness of the whole formed hydrophilic species is approximately 50 nm. Semiquantitative amounts of hydrophilic species follow the order of hydroxy calcium>iron carbonyl>calcium carbonate. Overall, hydrophilic species repulse adsorption of dixanthogen and significantly reduce the flotation performance of pyrite.

Modern production of non-ferrous metals is imperfect due to the loss of rock mass and metal in the technological chain ore mining to metal production. Processing of zinc oxide and oxidized copper ores by hydrometallurgical, pyrometallurgical and flotation methods is associated with formation of dump cakes, clinkers and flotation tailings. Therefore, all these methods are characterized by a low coefficient of complex use of raw materials (for example, for the Waelz process this coefficient is not higher than 35%). To increase the degree of complex processing of oxide raw materials, it is necessary to change the attitude to raw materials and create industrial technologies based on new principles. The article presents theoretical and applied research results on complex processing of oxidized copper and zinc oxide ores based on the new attitude to raw materials and new effective technologies allowing us to increase significantly the level of raw materials’ complex processing. Theoretical regularities, features and optimal technological parameters of new methods of complex processing of oxide, zinc and oxidized copper ores were found based on the ideology of a universal technological raw material and the simultaneous production of several products in one furnace unit.

The modeling allowed us to determine the equilibrium extraction degrees of phosphorus into gas (Р2, Р4), silicon into ferroalloy in the form of iron silicides (FeSi2, FeSi, Fe3Si, Fe5Si3, Si) and calcium into CaС2. At temperatures above 1500 °C, regardless of the amount of iron, the extraction degree of phosphorus into gas is more 99%. The resulting ferroalloy contains 21.2-23.8% of Si, 1.6-2.8% of Al; the calcium carbide has a capacity of 288-325 dm3/kg. The extraction degree of silicon into the alloy was 89.8%, calcium in CaC2 – 72.5%, phosphorus into gas – 99.4%. The ferroalloy, formed at the electric smelting of the Chulaktau phosphorite together with coke and steel shavings and containing 24.9-29.8% of Si, is FS25 grade ferrosilicon, and the formed calcium carbide has a capacity of 278-290 dm3/kg and belongs to the third and second grades. The developed technology makes it possible to increase the degree of phosphorites’ comprehensive use two times (up to 87.5%).

Suspensions of calcium carbonate are of a major concern in various fields, such as coating, painting and ceramics and their rheological properties are very important. The effect of polyacrylic acid (PAA) of different molecular mass as a surface modifier on the surface and rheological properties of the aqueous suspension of calcium carbonate was investigated. The effect of the volume fraction of particles and polymer concentration on the viscosity at lower shear rate was discussed. The flow behavior of the concentrated suspension in the presence of PAA can be explained by the difference of the repulsive force among particles, induced by the adsorbed polymer. The results showed that the dispersibility is more pronounced by the steric hindrance behavior rather than the electrostatic behavior.

Oxide ores are potential world raw materials sources of zinc manufacture. Despite a sufficiently high extraction level of zinc and lead known pyrometallurgical methods are characterized by formation of large quantity of industrial wastes therefore a complex use level of these raw materials is low. Hydrometallurgical methods are mainly applied for extraction of nonferrous metals. The present article contains the research results of complex processing an oxide ore of the Shaymerden deposit (Kazakhstan), consisting in the simultaneous production of a ferroalloy, calcium carbide and zinc sublimates from the ore in a thermal-ore arc electric furnace. The researches have been carried out with use of a HSC 5.1 software package (based on a principle of Gibbs energy minimum) and electrical smelting the ore in a monoelectrode arc electric controlled-output furnace. It was found, that in equilibrium conditions in a system ore-carbon-iron gaseous zinc is formed at Т > 1073 K, FeSi at Т > 1573 K, CaC2 at Т > 2073 K, Si at Т > 1673 K. The electrosmelting of ore in an arc furnace using of 38.7-40% coke and 16-28.4% steel cuttings the conversion degree of silicon into an alloy is 75-77%, calcium to calcium carbide 77-81%, zinc to sublimates 99.3%. The ferroalloy obtained contains 19.6-41.3% of silicon, the calcium carbide is characterized by capacity of 110-250 m3/kg, and the zinc sublimates contain 66-67% of zinc. The -suggested method allows to increase the combined usage of the ore from 35.6 to 89.6%.
