Opis:
A novel technology for the simultaneous and independent measurement of dual parameters is proposed and experimented. By using a single fiber Bragg grating half-pasted by 1C-LV epoxy under different curing conditions, the sensor structure is designed such that the reflective single-peak spectrum splits into a twin-peak spectrum, which makes the FBG spectrum form a natural spectral peak splitting bias. A measurement limitation exists in the FBG sensor packaging at room temperature, which can be solved by the high-temperature cured packaging method. To verify the validity of the theory and methodology, the experimental system is used. In the range from –1000 to +1000 με and from 35 to 75°C, the Bragg wavelength change is relative linear to the strain and temperature. The temperature and strain variations can be independently and simultaneously measured using the split peak, and the deviations of the FBG sensor are ±1°C and ±5 με, respectively. This single FBG sensor can realize dual-parameter measurement, which is valuable for narrow-space health monitoring.

Opis:
A novel dispersion-compensating fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based en/decoder is proposed to compensate both the out-band and in-band dispersion in a time-spreading/wavelength-hopping (TS/WH) optical code-division multiplexing (OCDM) system. The experimental realization of such en/decoders only needs a uniform-pitch phase mask and a sub-micrometer precision moving stage. Such an en/decoder pair with the ability of compensating the dispersion of transmission in 20-km single mode fiber (SMF) is simulated and experimentally fabricated. Both the simulation and experimental results show that the decoded pulse can be recovered without any distortion owing to the elimination of dispersion.

Opis:
In this work, thermal regeneration of fiber Bragg gratings inscribed in single-mode fibers, two-mode step index fibers and four-mode step index fibers is performed, where the single-mode fibers are used as the reference in the analysis. Specifically, we investigate the behavior of the thermal decay, recovery and eventually the permanent erasure of the gratings in the temperature range from 25 to 1300°C. In the domain of demarcation energy, the thermal responses of the gratings can be normalized and they share similar characteristic curves despite the different temperature ramping rates used in the annealing treatment. It is found that the demarcation energy at the regeneration point and the attempt-to-escape frequency for each grating can be associated with the confinement factors of the fibers. The finding in this work has provided a new insight in the manufacture of regenerated fiber Bragg grating sensors by using few-mode fibers for multiparameter sensing in high temperature environments.

Opis:
A fiber Brag grating-based high temperature sensor together with a low cost, high speed and compact size interrogation system using a long period grating was designed, developed and tested. The designed sensor measures the temperature from room temperature to 550 °C. The sensor head was configured by encapsulating an fiber Brag grating (type-I) of Bragg resonance wavelength at 1552.88 nm in a capillary tube made of copper. Long period grating with peak transmission loss at 1550 nm was employed to convert the wavelength information from fiber Brag grating into an intensity modulated signal. Temperature related optical intensity information was again converted into its equivalent electrical signal by using a photodiode. The achieved resolution of the sensor was found to be 0.5 °C.
