Opis:
The influence of Yarrowia lipolytica inoculum on biodegradation of hydrocarbons, and changes in microbiota composition in the soil contaminated with petroleum have been investigated. The material under study was contaminated clay soil, containing petroleum-derived substances at approximately 17 000 [mg/kg d. m.]. Microbiological analysis was carried out by the cultivation method and the content of individual hydrocarbons (n-aliphatic, BTEX and PAHs) was determined by the GC/MS method. The largest decrease of oil-derived substances, versus the control sample, was recorded at the beginning of the process. During the first 30 days, the yeast inoculation caused most effectively removal of n-aliphatic hydrocarbons and PAHs (approximately 80% reduction), however, the content of BTEX increased nearly three times. After 60 days of the process, PAHs concentration further decreased (by 40%), concentration of n-aliphatic hydrocarbons decreased a little, however the content of BTEX increased by 10%, compared to the initial concentration. Stimulating the biodegradation process with the yeast inoculum influenced the increase of the bacteria count, mainly Gram-positive, with simultaneous decrease of fungi number.

Opis:
The degradation of flutriafol in aqueous persulfate (S2O82–) system in the presence of selected transition metal ions was investigated. In the presence of Ag+ or Fe2+, flutriafol degradation occurs, whereas in the presence of Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+ and Bi3+ ions, the degradation is less than 15%. The Ag+/ S2O82– aqueous system being the most effective was adopted for experimental and theoretical investigations. It was confirmed that pH of 3.0 is the most suitable, and that both · SO4and ·OH– radicals are the main active species to afford flutriafol degradation, with the former contributes more than the latter. To elucidate degradation mechanism, molecular orbital calculations were performed and reaction intermediates identified by GC/MS and HPLC/MS/MS analyses. Three degradation pathways are proposed that involve the cleavage of C–N and C–C bonds as a result of ·SO4 attack, as well as the formation of hydroxylated products due to · OH radicals.

Opis:
The concentration, chemical composition, and mass closure of various fractions of ambient particulate matter (PM) were analyzed at crossroads and at a highway in Katowice (Poland). It was shown that at both sites organic carbon can constitute even 57% of the fine PM mass, about 20% of the fine PM mass can originate from the photochemical transformations of inorganic gaseous precursors, and that the coarse PM was mainly the organic matter (up to 39%) and crustal matter (up to 24%). Traffic emissions in Katowice can affect the formation of secondary aerosol (organic and inorganic), the contributions to PM and ambient concentrations of soil matter, NaCl, and trace elements. At the highway, the greatest impact on the concentrations and chemical composition of fine particles was probably due to exhaust emissions. At the crossroads, in the center of the city, the non-exhaust traffic emissions probably affected the coarse PM.
