Opis:
In this study, firstly, the effects of ammonia concentration, leaching time and solid/liquid ratio on the leaching behaviour of zinc from a smithsonite (ZnCO3) ore sample in aqueous ammonia solutions were investigated at room temperature by chemical, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy analyses. It was found that leaching ratio of zinc steeply increased from 30.1 to 76.2% with increasing ammonia concentration from 1.0 to 4.0 M and maximum zinc leaching ratio of 79.7% was reached after leaching in 13.3 M NH3 solution. The XRD pattern of the residue obtained after leaching in 4.0 M NH3 solution for 90 min at solid/liquid ratio of 0.15 g/mL, the optimum condition, showed that smithsonite phase in the ore sample almost completely dissolved whereas the gangue minerals goethite and calcite remained unaffected, confirming the selectivity of ammonia solution for zinc dissolution. Together with zinc, leaching ratios of cadmium were also determined. In second part of the study, precipitation tests (by complete drying at different temperatures) were conducted on dissolved zinc, carbonate and ammonia containing pregnant solutions obtained after selected leaching experiments. By complete drying of the pregnant solutions at low temperatures, i.e. 50°C, relatively pure solid zinc ammine carbonate (Zn(NH3)CO3) precipitates and at higher temperatures, i.e. 150°C, quite pure solid zinc carbonate hydroxide (Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6) precipitates could be prepared. High-temperature heating of Zn(NH3)CO3 and Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6 precipitates at 450°C yielded single-phase zinc oxide (ZnO). The chemical compositions, FT-IR spectra and scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs of some of the precipitates were also presented.

Industrial acidic zinc electrolyte has been treated with calcium compounds and/or concentrated ammonia solution and resulting crystalline phases as well as equilibrium mother liquors were analyzed in detail for dependence on preliminary dilution of electrolyte with water. Neutralized zinc electrolyte was an object of investigation in zinc(II) extraction with di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (DEHPA) as an extractant. Dependencies of zinc(II) and contaminants extraction on equilibrium pH, isotherms of zinc(II) extraction and stripping have been studied. During simulated laboratory counter-current trial of zinc extraction a new zinc electrolyte (stripped solution) has been produced. Raffinates left after the process were purified and qualified as mineral magnesium-ammonium fertilizer solutions.

Opis:
Acid leaching of Egyptian zinc ore from the Um Gheig area was carried out with sulfuric acid. This study determines the optimum conditions for dissolution of non-sulfide zinc ore. The optimum conditions are 25% -74m particle size, 45 °C temperature, 2 h leaching time, 1.1 stoichiometric molar ratio of H2SO4 to Zn, 1:3 solid/liquid ratio. The maximum filtration rate is 1.6 Mg Zn•m-2•day-1at pressure difference of 0.80 bar. The zinc recovery is about 90%. As the zinc ore contains zinc silicate, some additives were tested to enhance filtration and prevent formation of silica gel. To increase the added value of the product, zinc oxide was precipitated by a co-precipitation method in a nanosize powder with average particle size ~ 20 nm. Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye under UV light using ZnO nanopowders produced at different conditions was investigated. Photocatalytic efficiency with methylene blue (MB) concentration was reduced as much as 85% in 240 min with the produced nanoparticles.

Opis:
Modern production of non-ferrous metals is imperfect due to the loss of rock mass and metal in the technological chain ore mining to metal production. Processing of zinc oxide and oxidized copper ores by hydrometallurgical, pyrometallurgical and flotation methods is associated with formation of dump cakes, clinkers and flotation tailings. Therefore, all these methods are characterized by a low coefficient of complex use of raw materials (for example, for the Waelz process this coefficient is not higher than 35%). To increase the degree of complex processing of oxide raw materials, it is necessary to change the attitude to raw materials and create industrial technologies based on new principles. The article presents theoretical and applied research results on complex processing of oxidized copper and zinc oxide ores based on the new attitude to raw materials and new effective technologies allowing us to increase significantly the level of raw materials’ complex processing. Theoretical regularities, features and optimal technological parameters of new methods of complex processing of oxide, zinc and oxidized copper ores were found based on the ideology of a universal technological raw material and the simultaneous production of several products in one furnace unit.

Zinc leaching residue is a good source of zinc and has a great potential to be utilized. However, it is very difficult to recover lead, zinc and silver from the residue by traditional technologies. In this study, a new technology based on conversions of PbSO4 and ZnSO4 in the residue to their respective sulfides by reduction roasting with coal powder followed by a flotation treatment was developed. The effects of roasting temperature, coal dosage, reaction time and pyrite dosage were investigated at a laboratory scale. The results showed that the conversion extent of PbSO4 and ZnSO4 under the optimal experimental conditions was 71.89 and 69.76%, respectively. A flotation concentrate containing 39.13% Zn, 6.93% Pb and 973.54 g/Mg Ag was obtained from the treated material, and the recovery of Zn, Pb and Ag was 48.38, 68.23 and 77.41%, respectively. The tailing containing ZnFe2O4 or Fe3O4 could be either stockpiled or further disposed.

Opis:
Oxide ores are potential world raw materials sources of zinc manufacture. Despite a sufficiently high extraction level of zinc and lead known pyrometallurgical methods are characterized by formation of large quantity of industrial wastes therefore a complex use level of these raw materials is low. Hydrometallurgical methods are mainly applied for extraction of nonferrous metals. The present article contains the research results of complex processing an oxide ore of the Shaymerden deposit (Kazakhstan), consisting in the simultaneous production of a ferroalloy, calcium carbide and zinc sublimates from the ore in a thermal-ore arc electric furnace. The researches have been carried out with use of a HSC 5.1 software package (based on a principle of Gibbs energy minimum) and electrical smelting the ore in a monoelectrode arc electric controlled-output furnace. It was found, that in equilibrium conditions in a system ore-carbon-iron gaseous zinc is formed at Т > 1073 K, FeSi at Т > 1573 K, CaC2 at Т > 2073 K, Si at Т > 1673 K. The electrosmelting of ore in an arc furnace using of 38.7-40% coke and 16-28.4% steel cuttings the conversion degree of silicon into an alloy is 75-77%, calcium to calcium carbide 77-81%, zinc to sublimates 99.3%. The ferroalloy obtained contains 19.6-41.3% of silicon, the calcium carbide is characterized by capacity of 110-250 m3/kg, and the zinc sublimates contain 66-67% of zinc. The -suggested method allows to increase the combined usage of the ore from 35.6 to 89.6%.

In this study, the leaching behaviour of zinc from a smithsonite ore sample (23.43% Zn) having goethite and calcite as main gangue minerals was investigated in sodium hydroxide solutions using Xray diffraction and chemical analyses. Within the studied NaOH concentration range (1-4 mole/dm3), higher leaching ratio values for Zn were obtained by leaching at 298 K because of the decreased stability of soluble zincate species in solution at higher temperatures. When the concentration of NaOH solution was increased from 1 to 3 mole/dm3 at 298 K, leaching ratio value of Zn increased from 3.8 to 70.1%. At 4 mole/dm3 NaOH concentration, Zn leaching ratio value (70.9%) levelled off due to the formation of solid hydrated calcium zincate phase in leaching solution. On the other hand, very low leaching ratio values of Zn were obtained by leaching in 1 mole/dm3 NaOH solution at 298 K (3.8%) and 363 K (1.4%) due to the formation of solid zinc hydroxide and solid zinc oxide phases, respectively. It was observed that increasing leaching time from 1800 to 14400 s at 3 mole/dm3 NaOH concentration, favoured the formation of hydrated calcium zincate phase and so decreased the leaching ratio of Zn to a lower value (60.6%). The effect of solid/liquid ratio was also investigated and it was found that when solid/liquid ratio was decreased, Zn leaching ratio values decreased at constant OH/Zn mole ratio and increased at constant NaOH concentration conditions. Besides, for some of the experiments, leaching ratio values of lead were also given.

In this work, the structural changes occurred in a zinc carbonate (smithsonite) ore sample following heating at temperatures between 523 K and 1173 K were investigated in detail using X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal (TG/DTA) and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy analyses. Afterwards, the leaching characteristics of zinc from the ore sample and the heated ore samples in sodium hydroxide solutions were determined. While heating at 523 K did not cause any structural change in the ore sample, heating at 723 K completely converted smithsonite $(ZnCO_3)$ in the ore sample to zinc oxide $(ZnO)$, which resulted lower zinc leaching efficiencies of 40.6% and 62.0% for 3 and 4 mol/dm3 NaOH concentrations, respectively, in comparison to zinc leaching efficiencies (67.2% and 70.7%) obtained for the unheated ore sample. On the other hand, due to neoformation of dissolution resistant $ZnFe_2O_4$, $Ca_2ZnSi2O_7$ and $Zn_2SiO_4$ phases during heating and formation of $CaZn_2(OH)_6∙2H_2O$ phase during leaching, the leaching efficiency of zinc further decreased to 22.2% and 31.3%, respectively, in 3 and 4 $mol$ / $dm^3$ NaOH solutions for the ore sample heated at 1173 K. The formation of zinc-containing dissolution resistant phases by high-temperature heating was observed to be the only reason for the reduction in the zinc leaching efficiency (49.4% at 1173 K) at the highest NaOH concentration (8 mol/dm3) studied. In this work, the comparative precipitation studies were also conducted and crystalline zinc oxides with different morphologies could be precipitated at considerably high efficiencies from the selected pregnant solutions obtained following leaching.

The article presents the results of thermodynamic and experimental research on the processing of cinders from the firing of Shalkiya deposit lead-zinc ore tailings with the production of siliceous ferroalloys. Thermodynamic modeling carried out using the HSC-6.0 complex based on the Gibbs energy minimization principle showed that the interaction occur with the formation of CaSiO3, FeSiO3, MgSiO3, K2OˑSiO2, FeSi, Fe5Si3, SiC, Fe3Si, Si, SiOg, FeSi2.33, FeSi2, CaSi, Zn, Zng, Pb, Pbg; an increase in the iron amount in the system allows increasing the silicon extraction degree into the alloy at 1800°C to 76%, to reduce the silicon concentration in the alloy from 41 to 24%; FS25 grade ferrosilicon formed at 1752-1867°C in the presence of 88-100% iron, and FS45 grade ferrosilicon – at 1863-1900°C and 20-22.4% iron. Electric melting of a charge containing 63.83% calcined cinder of tailings, 19.15% coke, and 17.02% steel chips allows to obtain FS45 grade ferrosilicon (44.1-43.9% Si) with the extraction of 69.7% silicon and sublimates with the content of 32-38% zinc and lead. The results obtained allow complex processing of lead-zinc sulfide ore tailings with the extraction of not only non-ferrous metals, but also silicon in the ferroalloy.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the application of bioleaching technique to reduce content of selected heavy metals (Zn, Cu) in sewage sludge, and hence to indicate possibilities for metals recovery from this type of waste. Bioleaching experiments were carried out with mixed bacteria Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans, using leaching media: ferrous sulfate with different concentrations of Fe2+ (2 g/dm3 and 9 g/dm3) and sulfuric acid (VI). Dynamics of the increase in zinc concentration in biological systems was almost identical for both 9 g Fe2+/dm3 and 2 g Fe2+/dm3 in samples. However, higher values of Cu concentration were achieved using a medium with iron(II) salt 9 g/dm3 than in a 2 g/dm3 solution. Bioleaching with 9 g Fe2+/dm3 allowed for a nearly 20-fold reduction of zinc content and a 2-fold reduction in copper content in sewage sludge. Using 9 g/dm3 ferrous sulfate bioleaching could dissolve 94.8% Zn and 58.9%, whereas chemical leaching dissolved 47.3% Zn and 4.2% Cu.

The present paper deals with the extraction and separation of zinc, lead, silver, and bismuth from a refractory bismuth refining slag via a hydrometallurgical route. The process consists of a preliminary leaching of zinc with water, followed by the selective leaching of lead and silver with a calcium chloride solution, leading to the crystallization of lead chloride and the cementation of silver. The diagrams of the total concentrations of [Pb]/[Ag] versus [Cl-] and temperature in the Pb/Ag-Cl-H2O system were drawn, respectively, to determine the optimum concentration of leaching agent and leaching temperature. The potential-pH diagram of the Pb/Ag/Bi-H2O system indicates that the preferential leaching of lead and silver could be achieved. Finally, 98.8% of lead and 90.4% of silver were selectively removed by further leaching the water leaching residue with 400 g/dm3 of CaCl2 solution at pH 4.5 and 80 °C, while only 3.7% of bismuth was leached in this stage. Fifty-nine percent of lead in the leach liquor was separated out as PbCl2 by natural cooling. Ninety-five percent of silver in mother liquor was recovered by cementation with a lead sheet. The depleted CaCl2 solution can be sent to the leaching step again to close the loop.

The Cerattepe (Artvin) mine contains volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in northeastern Turkey. This is a kuroko type deposit located in Late Cretaceous volcanic, intrusive and sedimentary rocks, and has a structure with dense alteration stages. In this study, batch flotation tests were carried out to determine the flotation behavior of a new sample (mix ore), that was the combination of two different ores with different flotation behaviors. The mixed ore contains 2.18% Cu, 1.46% Zn, (Cu/Zn ratio 1.49) 38.35% Fe, and 41.6% S content. An efficient separation of copper minerals from zinc minerals using the conventional selective flotation method could not be achieved due to complex mineralogy and very low liberation degree. Therefore, sequential selective flotation resulted in poor Cu recovery. The effects of flotation parameters such as collector type, collector amount, particle size, and pH conditions, were investigated to obtain a bulk copper-zinc concentrate. The best results were obtained using thionocarbamate (Aero 3894) and dithiophosphine (Aerophine 3418A) collector reagents at d80=40 μm particle size. Under optimal conditions (grain size, d80=40 μm, pH=11, amount of collector reagent 60 g/t (Aero 3894), frother (MIBC)=50 g/t, solid ratio=32%, flotation time=8 min.), a bulk copper-zinc concentrate containing 13% Cu and 9.5% Zn was obtained with a copper yield of 84.4% and a zinc yield of 88.9%. The concentrate mass pull was 13%. After rougher and two-stage scavenger flotation, a concentrate (rougher concentrate + scavenger products) was obtained with a mass pull of 22%. Copper and zinc recoveries of this concentrate were 91.8% and 92.5%, respectively.

The aim of this study was to investigate manganese and zinc recoveries from spent zinc-carbon and alkaline battery powder. The effect of sulfuric acid concentration, ascorbic acid dosage, reaction temperature and leaching time on zinc and manganese dissolutions was investigated. The optimum reductive acid leaching conditions were determined as: 3 hours, 70 °C, 0.5 M of sulfuric acid concentration, 13 g/dm3 of ascorbic acid dosage, 1/20 g/cm3 of solid/liquid ratio and 200 rpm of stirring speed. Under these conditions, dissolution efficiencies were 99.99% for Zn and 99.25% for Mn. In addition, dissolution kinetics of manganese was undertaken, and the activation energy was found to be 7.04 kJ/mol. Using 3 M NaOH as precipitating agent at room temperature, 95.35% of Zn (at pH 8) and 93.66% of Mn (at pH 10) were precipitated from the leaching solution. Flotation of smithsonite coming from a cerussite flotation circuit was investigated using Armac C and Armac T as cationic collectors and their mixtures with potassium amyl xanthate (KAX) as an anionic collector. Under optimum condition using Armac T with sodium hexamethaphosphate as a de-pressant, a smithsonite concentrate with 42% Zn and 89.6% recovery is obtained while in the presence of sodium silicate depressant Armac C produces a concentrate containing 40.8% Zn with 92.5% recovery. However, Armac T acts a little more selectively than Armac C but their mixture with KAX act inversely. The KAX-Armac C mixed collector improves the Zn grade and recovery of the flotation concentrate while KAX-Armac T does not. At the mixture ratio of KAX - Armac C 2:1, the amine collector consump-tion is decreased and an optimal concentrate with 94% recovery and 43% Zn grade is obtained without any gangue depressant reagents.

According to results, the Mn dissolution in reductive acidic media was an intermediate-controlled process with activation energy of 10.21±2.60 kJ/mol. After the leaching step, Mn and Zn were selectively precipitated from the leaching solution using sodium hydroxide. After solid/liquid separation, manganese(II,III) oxide (Mn3O4) was obtained by drying at 105 °C in air. Next, Mn3O4 was converted to manganese(IV) oxide (MnO2) by heating at 800 °C in air. After that the solution containing Zn(OH)42- was treated with sulfuric acid to form zinc hydroxide, separated and next converted to zinc oxide by heating at 600 °C in air. The final products were characterized by XRD. The results showed that the proposed process can be effectively used for recovery of Mn and Zn from alkaline batteries.
