Opis:
In this study, we investigate the sensing applications in the presence of the nonlinear effects by proposing an all-optical sensor and considering nonlinear effects on modal propagation and output intensity based on an ultra-compact nonlinear multimode interference coupler. The sensor can be tuned to have the highest sensitivity in the wavelength and refractive index ranges and can detect water-soluble chemicals, air-pollutions, earthquake wave, blood parameters, and heart operation. The results indicate high output sensitivity to input wavelength whereas the nonlinear effects appear in the medium. This sensitivity led us to propose a wave sensor of both transverse and longitudinal waves, such as acoustic and light waves, when an external wave interacts with an input waveguide. For instance, this sensor can be implemented using a long input that is inserted in the land, and any wave could then be detected from the Earth. The visible changes in intensity at the output facet in various refractive indices of the surrounding layer show the high sensitivity to the refractive index of the surrounding layer, which is the foundation of introducing a sensor. Generally, the results show the high efficiency of nonlinear effects in all-optical sensing performances.

Sodium lead slag, generated during secondary lead production, is characterized as hazardous waste. The aim of the study was to investigate leaching mechanism and behaviour of lead and arsenic from sodium lead slag previously stabilized/solidified in concrete using additives: MgO, CaO, Ba(OH)2 and gypsum. The influence of selected additives on pollutant release was also investigated. The results of the NEN 7375 leaching test indicate dissolution of lead and arsenic from the outer layer of specimens, followed by depletion of possible mobile forms. Analysis of leachates from samples with various compositions showed that proper selection of additives may reduce leaching of Pb and As below the specified limits.

Some hazards posed by the operation of hydraulic systems, connected with low-frequency vibrations and noise are presented. Special attention is focused on infrasounds. The sources of low-frequency vibrations and noise and ways of reducing them are indicated. An original solution ensuring the effective reduction of vibrations and noise in a wide frequency range, i.e., a wide-band damper of pressure fluctuations, also performing the function of an acoustic filter, is proposed. The effectiveness of the damper was confirmed by the results of laboratory tests and tests carried out on engineering machines working in real conditions.

Opis:
The influence of the wear rate of drills used in bone surgery on the temperature distribution in the femur models (Sawbones) is presented in the paper. Surgical drills of diameter d = 4.5 mm and diverse edge geometry (90° and 120°) were selected for the study. In order to carry out thermal analysis with the use of finite element, experimental studies of wear process were necessary. These studies, among others, consisted in determination of average values of axial forces and cutting torques as a function of the number of drilled holes. The study showed an impact of the drill geometry on values that describe cutting process. It was found that the greatest values of torques and axial cutting forces occur in drills of point angle of 120°. Next, in order to determine the effect of wear rate on the generation of temperature in the cutting zone, thermal analysis of the drilling process using the finite element method was carried out. It was found that higher temperatures in the bone are observed for drilling with the use of the drill of point angle equal to 120°, as in the experimental study. For the tools of such edge geometry the wear of cutting edge is more intensive and the generated temperature in femur for the wear land VBB = 0.32 mm has reached the critical value associated with the process of thermal necrosis.

Purpose: One of the new products which can be used to increase physical activity and energy expenditure is the Torqway vehicle, powered by the upper limbs. The aim of this study was to (1) assess the usefulness and repeatability of the Torqway vehicle for physical exercise, (2) compare energy expenditure and physiological responses during walking on a treadmill and during physical effort while moving on the Torqway at a constant speed. Methods: The participants (11 men, aged 20.2 ± 1.3) performed the incremental test and submaximal exercises (walking on the treadmill and moving on the Torqway vehicle at the same speed). Results: Energy expenditure during the exercise on the Torqway was significantly higher (p = 0.001) than during the walking performed at the same speed. The intensity of the exercise performed on the Torqway expressed as %VO2max and %HRmax was significantly ( p < 0.001) higher than during walking (respectively: 35.0 ± 6.0 vs. 29.4 ± 7.4 %VO2max and 65.1 ± 7.3 vs. 47.2 ± 7.4 %HRmax). Conclusions: Exercise on the Torqway vehicle allows for the intensification of the exercise at a low movement speed, comparable to walking. Moving on the Torqway vehicle could be an effective alternative activity for physical fitness and exercise rehabilitation programs.

Opis:
Ballet is an art that puts extreme demands on the dancer’s musculoskeletal system and therefore significantly affects motor behavior of the dancers. The aim of our research was to compare plantar pressure distribution during stance phase of gait between a group of professional ballet dancers and non-dancers. Thirteen professional dancers (5 men, 8 women; mean age of 24.1 ± 3.8 years) and 13 nondancers (5 men, 8 women; mean age of 26.1 ± 5.3 years) participated in this study. Foot pressure analysis during gait was collected using a 2 m pressure plate. The participants were instructed to walk across the platform at a self-selected pace barefoot. Three gait cycles were necessary for the data analysis. The results revealed higher ( p < 0.05) pressure peaks in medial edge of forefoot during gait for dancers in comparison with nondancers. Furthermore, differences in total foot loading and foot loading duration of rearfoot was higher ( p < 0.05) in dancers as well. We can attribute these differences to long-term and intensive dancing exercises that can change the dancer’s gait stereotype.

This study presents the hydrodynamic characteristics of different adult male swimmer's body shape using computational fluid dynamics method. This simulation strategy is carried out by CFD fluent code with solving the 3D incompressible Navier–Stokes equations using the RNG k-ε turbulence closure. The water free surface is captured by the volume of fluid (VOF) method. A set of full body models, which is based on the anthropometrical characteristics of the most common male swimmers, is created by Computer Aided Industrial Design (CAID) software, Rhinoceros. The analysis of CFD results revealed that swimmer’s body shape has a noticeable effect on the hydrodynamics performances. This explains why male swimmer with an inverted triangle body shape has good hydrodynamic characteristics for competitive swimming.

The present study aims to apply a least squares support vector model (LS–SVM) for predicting cleaning efficiency of an electromagnetic filtration process, also called quality factor, in order to remove corrosion particles (rust) of low concentrations from water media. For this purpose, three statistical parameters: correlation coefficient, root mean squared error and mean absolute percentage error were calculated for evaluating the performance of the LS–SVM model. It was found that the developed LS–SVM can be used to predict the effectiveness of electromagnetic filtration process.

In this paper, we consider a hybrid photonic crystal symmetrically deformed (Bg5/Cu3/Bg5) consisting of the third generation of the copper mean sequence (Cu3), sandwiched between two Bragg mirrors at the fifth generation (Bg5). Our system realizes a polychromatic filter that transmits five wavelengths in the visible spectrum independently of the polarization of the light transverse electric or transverse magnetic. Secondly, the photonic crystal (Bg5/Cu3/Bg5) undergoes the deformation y = xk + 1 (where k is the degree of deformation, x and y are respectively the coordinates of the system before and after the deformation). With a proper choice of the degree of deformation k, this photonic crystal maintains its property of polychromatic filter whose transmission wavelength is independent of the polarization’s state. Thanks to this deformation, we can disperse the optical windows in different spectra of visible light and exactly in the violet, blue, green, and orange light. This system can be used in the fabrication of color filter devices and the white light emitting diodes.

Some basic problems related to measurements of electrical impedance of biological objects (bioimpedance) have been presented in this paper. Particularly problems arising from impedance occurring at the sensor–tissue interface (interfacial impedances) in contact measuring methods have been discussed. The influence of finite values of impedances of the current source and voltage measuring device has also been taken into consideration. A model of the impedance sensor for the four-electrode measurement method containing the interfacial, source and measuring device impedances has been given and its frequency characteristics obtained by the computer simulation have been presented. The influence of these impedances on the shape of frequency characteristic of the sensor model has been discussed. Measurements of bioimpedance of healthy and anomalous soft tissues have been described. Some experimental results, particularly the frequency characteristics of bioimpedance, have been shown. The presented results of measurement show that bioimpedance can be a valuable source of information about the tissues, so measurement of bioimpedance can be a useful supplement to other medical diagnostic methods.

The role of ore properties (density, particle size, and mineralogy) in thickening process was studied in this research. The shaking table was used to prepare the sample for the tests. The tailings were continuously fed on the table by gravity to separate the tailings in three products as slime, middling and coarse particles. The solid density and particle size of the samples were different. To study the effect of mineralogical properties, the sedimentation behavior of the feed and middling samples were tested. The results showed that the free settling velocity of the feed (2–6 mm/s) was less than that of the middling sample (18–23 mm/s), and the compressibility of middling (density: 0.63–0.86 Mg/m3) was more than that of feed (density: 0.33–0.47 Mg/m3). This was due to the amount of clay reduction in the middling sample. The sedimentation behavior of the slime and the coarse samples were also compared in order to study the effect of particle size and density. The settling velocity of the slime and the coarse particles was obtained as 0.1-0.4 and 26 mm/s, respectively, and the maximum underflow density were obtained as 0.35 and 1.57 Mg/m3, respectively. Therefore, the particle size and density reduction reduced the thickener performance. In order to study the effect of particle size, the sedimentation behavior of the slime and coarse samples were compared, and it was obtained that the settling velocity and underflow density increased with the increasing in the particle size.

Purpose: For many years research has been conducted on the development of resorbable, polymer, haemostatic materials designed to provide first aid and preliminary protection of injuries. The biological properties in vitro of a dressing in powder form called Hemoguard are expected to provide the ability to instantaneously stem bleeding with safe conditions of use. The aim of the study was to evaluate the haemostatic properties of a model of dressing based on micro- and nanofibrids of the chitosan, sodium/calcium alginate and/or carboxymethylcellulose complex. Dressings were prepared by spray-drying and freeze-drying. Methods: Human whole blood was subjected to timed contact with the haemostatic dressing model. Haemolytic action was determined by assaying the degree of haemolysis and evaluating blood cell morphology. Haemostatic action was determined on the basis of selected parameters of plasmatic clotting systems. Results: Dressings prepared by freeze-drying activated the coagulation system. The haemolytic index, plasma haemoglobin concentration values and blood cell morphological shapes were normal. Dressings prepared by spray-drying significantly activated coagulation. Activation of the coagulation process was evidenced by shorter clotting time of the plasma coagulation system and a longer process of clot formation. The dressing was associated with an increased haemolytic index and higher plasma haemoglobin concentration. The morphological shape of blood cells changed. Conclusions: The model of multi-resorbable wound dressings has haemostatic properties. The materials activate the clotting process more quickly than a single-dressing model. Increased activity was found for dressings prepared by spray-drying.

Opis:
A three-dimensional finite element technique was used to analyse single pile lateral response subjected to pure lateral load. The main objective of this study is to assess the influence of the pile slenderness ratio on the lateral behaviour of single pile. The lateral single pile response in this assessment considered both lateral pile displacement and lateral soil resistance. As a result, modified p-y curves for lateral single pile response were improved when taking into account the influence lateral load magnitudes, pile cross sectional shape and flexural rigidity of the pile. The finite element method includes linear elastic, Mohr-Coulomb and 16-nodes interface models to represent the pile behaviour, soil performance and interface element, respectively. It can be concluded that the lateral pile deformation and lateral soil resistance because of the lateral load are always influenced by lateral load intensity and soil type as well as a pile slenderness ratio (L/D). The pile under an intermediate and large amount of loading (in case of cohesionless soil) has more resistance (low lateral displacement) than the pile embedded on the cohesion soil. In addition, it can be observed that the square-shaped pile is able to resist the load by about 30% more than the circular pile. On the other hand, pile in cohesionless soil was less affected by the change in EI compared with that in cohesive soil.
