Opis:
Purpose: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion is a common surgical procedure performed to remove a degenerative or herniated disc in cervical spine. Unfortunately, clinical complications of anterior cervical plate (ACP) systems still occur, such as weak fixation stability and implant loosening. Previous researchers have attempted to ameliorate these complications by varying screw orientations, but the screw orientations are mainly determined according to the investigator’s experiences. Thus, the aim of this study was to discover the optimal screw orientations of ACP systems to achieve acceptable fixation stability using finite element simulations and engineering algorithms. Methods: Three-dimensional finite element models of C3-T2 multi-level segments with an ACP system were first developed to analyze the fixation stability using ANSYS Workbench 14.5. Then, artificial neural networks were applied to create one objective function, and the optimal screw orientations of an ACP system were discovered by genetic algorithms. Finally, the numerical models and the optimization study were validated using biomechanical tests. Results: The results showed that the optimal design of the ACP system had highest fixation stability compared with other ACP designs. The neuro-genetic algorithm has effectively reduced the time and effort required for discovering for the optimal screw orientations of an ACP system. Conclusions: The optimum screw orientation of the ACP system could be successfully discovered, and it revealed excellent fixation stability for the treatment of cervical degenerative disc disease. This study could directly provide the biomechanical rationale and surgical suggestion to orthopedic surgeons.

An experimental study on leaching of cobalt and nickel from a Lubin (Poland) sulfide flotation copper concentrate with oxygenated sulphuric acid solution in the presence of iron(III) sulfate is presented. The effect of temperature, iron(III) concentration, initial sulphuric acid concentration, oxygen flow rate and chloride ions addition on cobalt and nickel leaching were examined. The obtained results show, that enhancing investigated leaching parameters increases both the rate and leaching recovery of nickel and cobalt. The effect of iron(III) ions concentration is particularly significant. Additionally, a significant correlation between copper and nickel/cobalt leaching recovery was observed. Due to the fine dissemination of nickel and cobalt, they were leached remarkably faster when copper leaching recovery exceeded 90%.

This article presents the impact of the retreat mining (i.e., involving an intended collapse of the excavation roof, subsequent to extraction) on the subsidence of the ground surface. The analysis was carried out for two areas of coal underground mining located in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (Górnośląskie Zagłębie Węglowe). The assessment of the influence of exploitation on the ground surface was based on the results of geodetic measurements performed over a long period of time, whereas the land deformation prediction was made with the use of the EDNOPN program. The calculated and the predicted values were further compared, and the parameters of theory were determined. The results discussed in this paper have been shown by way of diagrams. The observed differences in the processes of vertical displacement were used in the analysis which took into account the degree to which the rock mass had been disturbed during the previous excavations, as well as the type of incumbent rock in the area under study.

Description : Software testing benefits from the usage of Knowledge Management (KM) methods and principles. Thus, there is a need to adopt KM to the software testing core processes and attain the benefits that it provides in terms of cost, quality, etc. Aim : To investigate the usage and implementation of KM for software testing. The major objectives include 1. To identify various software testing aspects that receive more attention while applying KM. 2. To analyse multiple software testing techniques, i.e. test design, test execution and test result analysis and highlight KM involvement in these. 3. To gather challenges faced by industry due to the lack of KM initiatives in software testing. Method : A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted utilizing the guidelines for snowballing reviews by Wohlin. The identified studies were analysed in relation to their rigor and relevance to assess the quality of the results. Results : The initial resulting set provided 4832 studies. From these, 35 peer-reviewed papers were chosen among which 31 are primary, and 4 are secondary studies. The literature review results indicated nine testing aspects being in focus when applying KM within various adaptation contexts and some benefits from KM application. Several challenges were identified, e.g., improper selection and application of better-suited techniques, a low reuse rate of software testing knowledge, barriers in software testing knowledge transfer, no possibility to quickly achieve the most optimum distribution of human resources during testing, etc. Conclusions : The study brings supporting evidence that the application of KM in software testing is necessary, e.g., to increase test effectiveness, select and apply testing techniques. The study outlines the testing aspects and testing techniques that benefit their users.

This article describes a developed and tested measuring system working in the ZigBee technology and using Atmel modules. The system is intended to be used in teaching, but it can also be used for research and utilitarian purposes after extending the application working with advanced graphical programs for the design of measuring systems. The system’s operation required developing module software in the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 environment. The ZigBee Measuring System software has been developed for the PC in the Bloodshed Software Dev-C++ 5.2.0.2 environment. Conducted experiments related to the evaluation of the efficiency and quality of the link confirm compliance with legal requirements. However, for teaching purposes, transmission conditions had to be adjusted to allow for observation and recording of spectrograms in accordance with the set parameters.

Opis:
Hydrometallurgical treatment of complex copper sulfidic ores, by-products and concentrates requires aggressive, oxidative leaching methods and application of Fe(III) ions and oxygen or bacteria assisted environment. Leach liquors generated in the process are usually copper and iron-rich solutions of high acidity. Such conditions require the application of suitably strong and selective reagent to extract copper in SX operations. This paper discusses the copper extraction behavior of commercial copper rea-gents: LIX 984N, LIX 612N-LV and Acorga M5640. Aqueous feed solutions used in SX studies were PLS’ generated in atmospheric leaching of commercial flotation concentrate, produced at Lubin Concen-trator (KGHM). McCabe-Thiele diagrams were generated and copper net transfer values were compared and discussed. It was shown that stronger modified aldoxime reagents (Acorga, LIX 612) are superior over non-modified salicylaldoxime/ketoxime mixture (LIX 984N). Particularly, the ester modified Acor-ga M5640 showed advantages in recovery and copper net transfer values.

The sequential designed experimentation was applied for leaching of Ni-Fe-Mg containing serpentine ores. The experiments were arranged in two sequences, according to the 2IV4-1 fractional factorial experimental design. Six factors were examined, i.e., the material sample, solid-to-liquid ratio (S/L), acid type and its concentration, leaching temperature, and stirring speed. The analysis of variance was used to establish the relation between tested factors, their interactions, and metals recovery. All the derived empirical models were of prime statistical importance. The obtained results showed that the recovery of Ni was dependent mainly on the material sample, the concentration of acid as well as their interaction, and temperature. The recovery of nickel at the optimal leaching conditions was high (93%). The dissolution of other metals was below 84% (Fe) and 54% (Mg).

Novel SiO2/silane/POSS functional hybrids have been synthesized via an immobilization method. Hybrid materials were obtained through a connection of emulsion silica with defined dispersive and morphological properties with (3-isocyanatepropyl)triethoxysilane and selected mono- or octasubstituted POSS compounds in organic solvent. Modification effectiveness of the obtained SiO2/silane/POSS hybrid systems was confirmed with the use of the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). In order to determine the influence of bifunctionalization on coverage degree of the selected POSS compounds, elemental analysis (C, H, N contents) was performed. Moreover, parameters of porous structure of the obtained products were determined: BET surface area, total volume and mean size of pores. During analysis the thermal stability of silsesquioxanes cage, unmodified silica support, and hybrid systems have been investigated. For this purpose dispersive and morphological characterization (particle size distribution and TEM images) was performed.

It is a regular occurrence for residents living near industrial plants to complain regarding odor problems. Those plants may also try to protect themselves from liability by demonstrating some environmental evidence. An investigation to prove whether the accused industrial complex is the major source of released odors among several potential sources of odor problems was carried out using the combination of measurement techniques. The multi-monitoring methods comprise utilizations of olfactory system, questionnaire, electronic detector and chemical analysis. This study demonstrated the achievement of integrating scientific monitoring methods to support the enforcement of odor acts for management in the industrial city.

In this study, flocculation behaviors of natural stone powder suspensions were determined by applying classical jar tests. The flocculation tests were performed in the presence of different types of polymers at different polymer dosages and pHs. Then, the settling rates and residual turbidity values of suspensions were recorded. The flocculation performance of flocculants possessing unique molecular architecture (UMA) and conventional polyacrylamide based flocculants was investigated for the solidliquid separation of natural stone processing wastewater. The effects of flocculant type, dosage and pH were examined. The results obtained from this study indicated that in terms of the settling rate and turbidity, the medium anionic SPP 508 flocculant of 28% charge density showed a better flocculation performance compared to other conventional and UMA flocculants at natural pH. The SPP 508 flocculant gave the lowest turbidity value of 3 NTU (Nepheleometric turbidity Unit) at dosage of 0.3 mg/dm3, while the highest settling rate (870 mm/min) for the suspensions tested was achieved at 1 mg/ dm3 dosage for the same flocculant. However, the lowest settling rate was obtained by high cationic flocculant (Enfloc 440 C). All flocculants showed a good flocculation performance for the settling rate and turbidity at pH 8 and 10.

The work discusses physicochemical phenomena related to interactions between the inhaled particles and the surface of pulmonary fluid which contains the lung surfactant. Dynamic surface phenomena which arise due to periodical variations of the interfacial area during breathing cycle are the extraordinary feature of this system and they are strictly related to the mechanics of ventilation and the pulmonary mass transfer processes. Presence of foreign material such as inhaled micro- and nanoparticles with different size, surface properties and morphology may alter these phenomena which may have some health consequences. This effect is discussed on two examples: mineral particles (CeO2) and carbonaceous particles emitted from diesel engine running on two different fuels. Two experimental methods of research in this field are presented: the Langmuir balance and the oscillating pendant drop. The results show the sensitivity of dynamic surface properties of the lung surfactant on exogenous materials which may be introduced to the respiratory system by inhalation of dusty air. Some physicochemical interpretation of these results is presented.

The research was performed to evaluate usability of stabilization/ solidification (S/S) processes in permanent separation of the surface of soil contaminated with xylene in order to reduce its emission to the environment. For the needs of the experiment, soil samples were prepared with the same amounts of solvent and then, after averaging their physicochemical composition, stabilized with Portland cement CEM II 32,5 R. In the course of stabilization/solidification process, all emitted gaseous contaminants were monitored. The effect of a binder dose on xylene emission was evaluated based on the momentary concentrations (C8H10) monitored above the surface of reactive mixture using a flame-ionization detector. Simultaneously, contaminated air was run through pipes filled with activated carbon. Then, based on chromatographic analysis of xylene vapors adsorbed on activated carbon, the measured momentary concentrations were verified.

Artificial materials including various kinds of polymers like polyurethanes are more and more widely used in different branches of science and also in biomedical engineering. The paper presents the process of creating a constitutive equation for a polyurethane nanocomposite which is considered to be hyper-elastic. The constitutive modelling was conducted within the range of application of the material as one of the components of lumbar intervertebral disc prosthesis. In the paper, the biomechanics of the lumbar spine and the most frequently applied intervertebral disc prostheses are described. Also a polyurethane nanocomposite as a new material to be applied in prostheses is presented. The way of formulating a constitutive equation by means of mathematical formulae is described. Four various hyper-elastic potential functions are considered, i.e., Ogden, Neo-Hookean, Yeoh and Mooney–Rivlin. On the basis of monotonic compression tests the best hyper-elastic model for the material considered was chosen and hyper-elastic constants were calibrated. Finally, the constitutive model was validated on the basis of FE analysis. The paper ends with a conclusion and presentation of further plans of research directed towards the development of a constitutive equation and its application in computer simulations by means of the finite element method.

Based on the Space Vector Modulated - Direct Torque Control (SVM- DTC) scheme, an analysis and comparison of conventional (1/ωm) and proposed method are presented for a whole speed range including FW regions. The proposed strategy is verified through simulation with a 1.5 kW induction motor drive.

The rapidly declining quality of ores and concentrates produced by Lubin Concentrator (KGHM) makes the flotation concentrates exceptionally difficult-to-process by flash smelting. Currently, a hydrometallurgical process, using sulfuric acid with the presence of oxidants as a leaching medium, seems to be either a reasonable alternative or a complementary option to pyrometallurgy. The unique lithological, mineralogical and chemical properties of the concentrate were considered in a selection of the process route. Results of a pressure leaching of the copper sulfide concentrate from Lubin Concentrator (ZWR Lubin) with oxygenated aqueous H2SO4 solutions are presented. The effect of temperature from 120 to 200 °C, initial concentration of H2SO4 from 60 to 100 g/dm3, and oxygen partial pressure ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 MPa were investigated. The pressure leaching appeared to be an efficient process for recovering copper from the Lubin concentrate. At optimal leaching conditions (140 °C, 100 g/dm3 H2SO4, 1.0 MPa O2) 96% of Cu was extracted after 4 h.
