Opis:
A low-grade copper ore from Mpanda Mineral Field (MMF), Tanzania containing 0.90% Cu, 10.40% Fe and 58.3% SiO2 was subjected to beneficiation adopting selective dispersion, flocculation and flotation techniques. Based on the mineralogical characterization of the sample chalcopyrite, pyrite and quartz were identified as the major minerals. The isoelectric point of MMF ore was observed to be at pH 2.7, signifying that the ore was highly siliceous. The addition of sodium trisilicate and xanthan gum shifted the zeta potential of ore to more electronegative values. Adsorption of xanthan gum on chalcopyrite and silica indicated that the maximum adsorption was at pH 2.3 for chalcopyrite and the adsorption isotherm exhibited L2 type of the Giles classification. On the contrary, no adsorption of xanthan gum on silica was observed. The ground ore was selectively dispersed and flocculated at pH 9.7 using 30 ppm of sodium trisilicate and 30 ppm of xanthan gum. The grade of CuFeS2 was improved to 19.8% after 3 desliming stages. Flotation of the flocculated portion was carried out at pH 10.30 using 30 g/t of potassium amyl xanthate and potassium ethyl xanthate (1:1) , 40 g/t of Na2S as a sulphidising agent and methyl iso-butyl carbinol (MIBC) as a frother yielding a rougher concentrate with silica and chalcopyrite grades of 8.4% and 23.5% respectively with corresponding recoveries of 4.8% and 92.8% respectively. Additionally, rougher concentrate was subjected to cleaner flotation yielding silica and chalcopyrite grades of 1.8% and 29.2 % respectively and with recoveries of 1.2% and 89.1% respectively.

Opis:
Numerical simulations of air blast loading in the near-field acting on the ground have been performed. A simplified blast model based on empirical blast loading data representing spherical and hemispherical explosive shapes has been simulated. Conwep is an implementation of the empirical blast models presented by Kingery and Bulmash, which is also implemented in the commercial code LS-DYNA based on work done by Rahnders-Pehrson and Bannister. This makes it possible to simulate blast loads acting on structures representing spherical and hemispherical explosive shapes of TNT with reasonable computational effort as an alternative to the SPH and Eulerian model. The CPU time for the simplified blast model is however considerably shorter and may still be useful in time consuming concept studies. Reasonable numerical results using reasonable model sizes can be achieved not only for modelling near-field explosions in air but most areas of geotechnical. Calculation was compared with blast SPH and Eulerian model.

Opis:
A number of flotation plants around the world have increased the use of seawater due to limited sources of fresh water. The aim of this research work is to study the role that Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions play in the interactions between kaolinite and chalcopyrite in seawater. In order to achieve this objective, the effect of kaolinite on flotation of chalcopyrite is studied over the pH range from 8 to 11, when flotation is carried out in seawater and in a 0.01M NaCl solution. The influence of calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium ions on the extent of depression by kaolinite is evaluated. The micro-flotation results indicate that chalcopyrite is depressed by kaolinite in both 0.01 NaCl solution and seawater. In the 0.01 NaCl solution, the depressing effect of kaolinite decreases as the pH increases from 8 to 11. However, the results obtained using seawater show that the depressing effect of kaolinite is similar to what is observed in a 0.01 NaCl solution only at pH values below 9, but above this pH kaolinite significantly affects the recovery of chalcopyrite. The results from experiments with using solutions containing individual cations show that the depressing action of kaolinite in the presence of Mg2+ and Ca2+ is more obvious at pH values of 9 and 10, respectively, which correlates with the pH values at which the first hydroxy-complexes of these divalent cations start forming. This seems to indicate that depressing effect of kaolinite on chalcopyrite in seawater may be related to formation of hydrolyzed species of calcium and magnesium. These species can induce heterocoagulation between kaolinite and chalcopyrite. The trends observed in the micro-flotation experiments are in good agreement with the results of the induction time measurements and slime coating tests.

Opis:
A new strategy of enrichment of polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAO) and denitrifying polyphosphate accumulating organisms (DPAO) at low temperature ranging from 8 °C to 11 °C was demonstrated through two lab-scale reactors operated in sequential anaerobic-aerobic (AO) or anaerobic-anoxic (AA) conditions. It was found that the AO reactor is able to achieve a good phosphorus removal performance after 40 days of operation, while a similar stable phosphorus removal can be obtained in the AA reactor after 80 days. This result suggests that the enrichment of PAO was easier than that of DP AO at low temperature. Through switching batch tests, when DPAO is exposed to aerobic conditions, it can immediately exhibit a good phosphorus removal similar to that under anoxic conditions, while PAO can only present poor phosphorus removal when exposed to anoxic conditions, suggesting that two different types of Accumulibacter were enriched both in AA and AO reactors. Microbial analysis with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and DAPI (4',6-diamidino-2 -phenylindole) staining revealed that Accumulibacter was dominant both in the two reactors, accounting for 61.6% and 79.3% of all bacteria in AA and AO reactors, respectively. Although the different amount of Accumulibacter was enriched in the two reactors, the similar microbial morphologies were observed by using scanning electron micrograph (SEM), both presenting long-rod morphology. This kind of Accumulibacter may display affinities for sodium acetate used as the carbon sources here. This strategy proposed in this study was shown to be effective in achieving a very high enrichment of Accumulibacter at low temperature by linking chemical analysis with microbial observation.

Opis:
A new method using non-salt roasting-alkaline leaching to treat vanadium slag was proposed in this study. The V(III) in vanadium slag is oxidized to V(V) by roasting and the latter can be effectively leached out as vanadate by alkaline leaching. This method possesses distinct advantage of being able to treat high-grade vanadium slag. For the South Africa high-grade vanadium slag, the maximum vanadium recovery of 98% was achieved when the reaction conditions were roasting temperature of 850 °C, roasting time of 2 h, alkali concentration of 30 wt.%, leaching temperature of 210 °C, and leaching time of 2 h. The roasting and leaching mechanisms have been well elucidated based on the XRD and SEM analysis results. The phases transitions of vanadium slag were clearly presented. This work has laid the foundation for the industrial application of non-salt roasting-alkaline leaching and provided new insights into effective extraction of high-grade vanadium slag.

A finite-difference time-domain numerical solution is presented for solving a single second-order photoacoustic equation, instead of solving three coupled first-order equations. In this way, we are able to insert the heating function to the simulation directly instead of initial pressure. Results are validated using k-Wave simulation and show a good agreement for future development. The perfectly matched layer boundary condition has been implemented for a second-order photoacoustic equation and results are compared to Dirichlet, Neumann and Mur boundary conditions.

Opis:
An anaerobic-anoxic/oxic (AA/O) five-tank biological process called five-step continuous flow activated sludge process (FSCFASP) was developed to force the oscillation of organic matter and nutrient concentrations in process reactors. The run scheme and schematic diagram of FSCFASP was described. The run cycle was divided into two symmetrical half cycles with eight periods during each cycle. The duration of each period was established according to biological process requirements. The optimal running times of the periods were 90, 60, 60, 30, 90, 60,6 0 and 30 min at the HRT of 16 h, air/water ratio of 35% and SRT of 21 day at the temperature range of 19-23 °C. The optimized system achieved 88.09±1.43%, 90.33±2.9%, 68.83±5.34% and 87.67±2.9% of the chemical oxygen demand, NH4+-N, TN, and TP removal efficiencies, respectively, during a 11-month operation with the effluent meeting the Chinese sewage discharge standard GB18918-2002 (level A). Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification phenomena were observed in the tank one which is important to reduce the quantity of aeration and the duration of a next anoxic state. Compared with other existing technologies, this system achieved high nitrogen and phosphorus removal without equipment of sludge and mixed liquor return. Thus, it is effective for reducing energy consumption.

Background : Software development productivity is widely investigated in the Software Engineering literature. However, continuously updated evidence on productivity is constantly needed, due to the rapid evolution of software development techniques and methods, and also the regular improvement in the use of the existing ones. Objectives : The main goal of this paper is to investigate which factors affect productivity. It was also investigated whether economies or diseconomies of scale exist and whether they may be influenced by productivity factors. Method : An empirical investigation was carried out using a dataset available at the software project repository ISBSG. The major focus was on factors that may affect productivity from a functional point of view. The the conducted analysis was compared with the productivity data provided by Capers Jones in 1996 and 2013 and with an investigation on open-source software by Delorey et al. Results : This empirical study led to the discovery of interesting models that show how the different factors do (or do not) affect productivity. It was also found out that some factors appear to allow for economies of scale, while others appear to cause diseconomies of scale. Conclusions : This paper provides some more evidence about how four factors, i.e., programming languages, business areas, architectural types, and the usage of CASE tools, influence productivity and highlights some interesting divergences in comparison with the results reported by Capers Jones and Delorey et al.

Purpose: accurate assessment of human joint parameters is a critical issue for the quantitative movement analysis, due to a direct influence on motion patterns. In this study three different known functional methods are experimentally compared to identify knee joint kinematics for further gait and motion analysis purposes. Methods: taking into account the human knee physiology complexity, within its roto-translation, the study is conducted on a lower limb mechanical analogue with a polycentric hinge-based kinematic model. The device mimics a joint with a mobile axis of rotation whose position is definable. Sets of reflective markers are placed on the dummy and flexion-extension movements are imposed to the shank segment. Marker positions are acquired using an optoelectronic motion capture system (Vicon 512). Results: acquired markers’ positions are used as input data to the three functional methods considered. These ones approximate the polycentric knee joint with a fixed single axis model. Different ranges of motion and number of markers are considered for each functional method. Results are presented through the evaluation of accuracy and precision concerning both misalignment and distance errors between the estimated axis of rotation and the instantaneous polycentric one, used as reference. Conclusion: the study shows the feasibility of the identification of joint parameters with functional approaches applied on a polycentric mechanism, differently from those usually conceived by the reviewed algorithms. Moreover, it quantifies and compares the approximation errors using different algorithms, by varying number and position of markers, as well ranges of motion.

A new method for passive ranging using image size measurements from one sensor has been presented. The method relies on pixel filtration with histogram-based thresholding, followed by intensity and gradient magnitude analysis. Its efficiency and robustness were assessed in real infrared surveillance sequences, and it has proved to lead to better results than non-filtering techniques. The object distance estimation mean relative error does not exceed 3%, which implies that the suggested method enables precise range estimation based on object size measurements. To maximize the benefits of the suggested method, Kalman filter has been included in the algorithm in order to overcome fluctuations of the estimated object size.

The analysis of explosive force, through rate of force development (RFD) and contractile impulse (CI), from handgrip strength data seems to be useful and promising information to study the aging of musculoskeletal system and health status. We aimed to test the hypothesis that, in elderly women, the handgrip explosive force could be better associated to the functional mobility than maximum handgrip strength. Handgrip strength and the performance of Timed Up & Go Test (TUG) were measured from sixty-five community-dwelling healthy elderly women. The average slope of the moment–time curve (Δ moment/Δ time) over the time interval of 0–200 ms relative to the onset of contraction was calculated to provide the RFD and CI. The highest strength achieved during the isometric contraction was used as maximum handgrip strength. Pearson correlations were used to assess the strength of the relationship between the handgrip strength parameters (Maximum strength and explosive force from 0–200 ms) and TUG test performance from older women. The correlation analysis showed that the TUG test performance was inversely correlated to the handgrip strength parameters, with better relationship with explosive force parameters. The handgrip explosive force seems to be a promising predictor of functional mobility of elderly women, since it showed a better relationship with functional mobility than maximum handgrip strength.

The sensor head was configured by encapsulating an fiber Brag grating (type-I) of Bragg resonance wavelength at 1552.88 nm in a capillary tube made of copper. Long period grating with peak transmission loss at 1550 nm was employed to convert the wavelength information from fiber Brag grating into an intensity modulated signal. Temperature related optical intensity information was again converted into its equivalent electrical signal by using a photodiode. The achieved resolution of the sensor was found to be 0.5 °C.

Thin films of high-k oxides are presently used in semiconductor industry as gate dielectrics. In this work, we present the comparison of structural, morphological and electrical properties of binary and composite layers of high-k oxides that include hafnium dioxide (HfO2), aluminum oxide (Al2O3) and zirconium dioxide (ZrO2). We deposit thin films of high-k oxides using atomic layer deposition (ALD) and low growth temperature (60–240 °C). Optimal technological growth parameters were selected for the maximum smoothness, amorphous microstructure, low leakage current, high dielectric strength of dielectric thin films, required for gate applications. High quality of the layers is confirmed by their introduction to test electronic structures, such as thin film capacitors, transparent thin film capacitors and transparent thin film transistors. In the latter structure we use semiconductor layers of zinc oxide (ZnO) and insulating layers of high-k oxide grown by the ALD technique at low temperature (no more than 100 °C).
