Opis:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of extended home-based vision therapy as a treatment for symptomatic convergence insufficiency (CI) in young exophoric adults. Twenty-four adults with symptomatic exophoria at near with convergence insufficiency were divided into an experimental and a control group. The experimental group received 24 weeks of vision training, while the control group received no therapy. The three major outcome measures were the scores on the convergence insufficiency symptom survey V15 (CISS-V15), the near point of convergence and the positive fusional vergence at near. Only subjects from the experimental group demonstrated statistically and clinically significant changes in the CISS-V15 score (improvement of 20 points), near point of convergence (improvement of 5.5 cm) and positive fusional vergence at near (improvement of 15 Δ). No significant changes of either symptoms or signs were evident for the control group. The results presented in this study showed that extending the time and number of home based therapy techniques might be an effective treatment modality in adult subjects with CI. This therapy might be an alternative way for treatment of symptomatic exophoric CI subjects, who cannot attend office sessions.

Opis:
The aim of the present study was to test if the exposure to transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) would change the excitability of the visual cortex and influence an accommodative response of the ocular lens. Twenty four subjects were divided into two groups: real-stimulation of the occipital cortex in which participants were exposed to real stimulation (1 mA for 12 min), and sham in which subjects were tested with placebo stimulation. The results showed that tDCS might indeed influence accommodative response. The strongest and most evident effect was observed when a 3.0 D accommodative stimulus was used: anodal tDCS increased but cathodal tDCS – decreased the accommodative response. The second finding was that the effect of stimulation was dependent on the examined eye. The right eye with slightly lower visual acuity and weaker accommodative response in pre-test, responded more strongly than the left eye. The short-time tDCS might modulate excitability of the neurons in visual cortex and eye sensitivity, reflected in the change of accommodative response. The tDCS method may be considered a technique that could reinforce conventional active visual training to improve accommodative functions.

Opis:
The visual evoked potential technique makes it possible to explore the visual system with a high temporal resolution, thereby providing information about different phases of binocular integration. The aim of the study was to characterize the amplitude, latency and scalp distribution of pattern-reversal gratings visual evoked potentials related to binocular viewing. 12 adult participants without any pathology of the visual system were examined by electroencephalography (EEG), with three viewing conditions: the dominant eye, non-dominant eye, and both eyes. They were tested with reversed checkerboard patterns presented with a frequency of 1.02 Hz. The amplitudes of visual evoked potentials were calculated to detect the effect of binocular integration. The strongest binocular summation was observed on the N75 component. P100 component was also affected by binocular viewing, mainly above parieto-occipital cortex. In the later time window binocular summation was reflected in changes in amplitude of N145 component over the right parieto-occipital region. The obtained results suggest that binocular summation is not limited to occipital cortex as its influence was also observed above parieto-occipital regions. Changes in amplitude of N75 component looks to be a good predictor of binocular summation.

Opis:
Vergence eye movements, movements executed in opposite directions, have a crucial role in depth perception and are necessary for maintaining proper binocular vision. Despite these facts, the neurophysiological studies of vergence eye movement on humans are rare and give ambiguous results. In the present study, the sensory event-related potentials (ERPs) related to the processing of stimuli called for convergence, divergence and saccade were explored. Sixteen healthy subjects (mean 23 years old) performed reflexive (visually-guided) eye movements and event-related potentials from 64 active electrodes were recorded. The significant preponderance of cortical activity for convergence among three conditions was revealed and it concerned both anterior (larger negativity) and posterior cortex (larger positivity). Here, we also reported the longest latency for convergence. These results may suggest larger cortical representation for stimuli presented in near visual space, thus the preponderance of near cells within cortex, which respond to cross retinal image disparity being a cue for convergence.

Opis:
In this work we investigate nanocomposite carbonaceous–palladium (C–Pd) films prepared by physical vapor deposition. Such films are promising materials for hydrogen sensor applications. This is related to the highly selective hydrogen absorption by palladium nanocrystallites. The C–Pd films obtained in various technological conditions differ in structure and electrical properties. These films were characterized by SEM, EDS and FTIR spectroscopy. FTIR spec-troscopy was used to determine the amount of palladium acetate and fullerene, incompletely decomposed during the deposition process. FTIR spectra enabled us to explain the differences in C–Pd films resistance based on palladium chemical structure. The possibility of the application of C–Pd films as active layers in hydrogen sensors was also studied. The results showed that synthesized C–Pd films containing palladium nanograins could be used for hydrogen sensing.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to assess static balance after reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), using gracialis tendons graft (GR) or semi-tendinosus (ST), compared to patients treated with the Ligament Advanced Reinforcement System (LARS). The study was performed within 36 to 48 months after the surgery. Methods: The study included 96 patients. The LARS group consisted of 44 patients, control group operated with ST/GR tendons included 52 patients. The stabilometric platform Alpha was used to assess the static balance. Two 30-second trials in the double-leg stance position with eyes opened and closed were performed. The distribution of loads in a free standing was also assessed. Results: In the test with open eyes the subjects from the LARS group had a significantly longer center of pressure (COP) path, a higher mean velocity, a greater mean COP sway in foot in the lateral direction and a larger path area occupied by the COP graph. During the tests with eyes closed, a significant difference occurred in the mean displacement of COP in lateral direction – greater in the LARS group. In addition, all parameters deteriorated during the tests with eyes closed in both groups. Conclusions: In static balance assessed with eyes closed, more proprioceptive deficits may appear in the LARS group.
