Opis:
In this paper, we have reported a very advanced hybrid optical amplifier (Raman-TDFF amplifier) for the 180 × 10 Gbps super dense wavelength division multiplexing system with the channel spacing of 100 GHz. The performances of the model have been evaluated in terms of gain and noise figures for the C-band (from 1525 to 1565 nm). Gain flatness (> 21 dB) is recorded with the least variation of 2.5 dB without using any cost effective technique. Further, the effect of the proposed hybrid optical amplifier has also been analyzed with slightly shifting the wavelength spectrum for the same feature.

Opis:
The accuracy of an empirically derived density-modulus equation for bone depends upon the loading conditions and anatomic site of bone specimens used for experimentation. A recent study used FE modeling to compare the ability of three density-modulus relationships to predict strain during bending in neutral forearm rotation in the distal ulna; however, due to the inhomogeneous nature of these FE models, the performance of each equation is not necessarily consistent throughout forearm rotation. This issue is addressed in the present study, which compares the performance of these equations in pronation and supination. Strain gauge data were collected at six discreet locations of six ulna specimens loaded in bending at 40° of pronation and supination. Three FE models of each specimen were made, one for each density-modulus relation, and the strain output compared to the experimental data. The equation previously shown to be most accurate in predicting ulnar strain in neutral forearm rotation was also most accurate in pronation and supination. These results identify this one equation as the most appropriate for future FE analysis of the ulna (including adaptive remodeling, and further show that isotropic and inhomogeneous FE bone models may provide consistent results in different planes of bending.

Opis:
Tendon injury is an increasing problem in medicine due to aging of the population and increased activity demands. Many rodent animal models are used in order to evaluate tendon reconstruction. Although tendon reruptures are a known problem, the outcomes of tendon repair in animal models are rarely discussed in the literature. The goal of the present experimental study was to compare the primary fixation stability of three suture techniques for repair of Achilles tendon defects in a rat model using a collagen scaffold. Methods: Cadaveric left hind limbs of Sprague-Dawley rats were prepared with an Achilles tendon defect of 3 mm and rejoined using a collagen scaffold. Three suture configurations (simple, simple stitch with additional framing suture, and modified Mason–Allen stitch; n = 5 each) underwent tensile testing until complete failure was observed. Results: Under a load of a mean value of 6.6 N, the failure load of simple stitches was the significantly lowest ( p < 0.01). Both, modified Mason–Allen stitches and simple stitches with additional framing suture showed a mean failure load of more than 14 N. Regardless of the suture technique, most of the samples showed failure of tendon due to suture tear-out. The suture material as well as the scaffold remained mostly intact. Conclusions: Although simple end-toend suture techniques are common in the literature, stitches with more suture strands should be preferred. Using techniques like an additional framing suture or modified Mason–Allen stitch, maximum failure load can be doubled and the risk of tendon rerupture may be decreased in vivo.

Development and maintenance of understandable and modifiable software is very challenging. Good system design and implementation requires strict discipline. The architecture of a project can sometimes be exceptionally difficult to grasp by developers. A project’s documentation gets outdated in a matter of days. These problems can be addressed using software analysis and visualization tools. Incorporating such tools into the process of continuous integration provides a constant up-to-date view of the project as a whole and helps keeping track of what is going on in the project. In this article we describe an innovative method of software analysis and visualization using graph-based approach. The benefits of this approach are shown through experimental evaluation in visual assessment of software quality using a proof-of-concept implementation — the Magnify tool.

Opis:
The Triple-Diffusive convection in Walters’ (Model B') fluid with varying gravity field is considered in the presence of uniform vertical magnetic field in porous medium. For the case of stationary convection, the magnetic field, varying gravity field and the stable solute gradients have stabilizing effects whereas the medium permeability has destabilizing (or stabilizing) effect on the system under certain conditions. A linear stability analysis theory and normal mode analysis method have been carried out to study the onset convection. The kinematic viscoelasticity has no effect on the stationary convection. The solute gradients, magnetic field, varying gravity field, porosity and kinematic viscoelasticity introduce oscillatory modes in the system, which were non-existent in their absence. The sufficient conditions for the non-existence of overstability are also obtained. The results are also shown graphically.

Process of struvite (Mg4NH4PO4·6H2O) precipitation is a promising method for phosphorus recycling. The use of cheap magnesium ore for precipitation struvite as phosphate recovery has been examined. The optimal conditions for precipitation are pH 9.0 and Mg2+: NH4 +: PO4 -3 molar ratio 1.1:30.7:1. Linear correlation of experimental data is in qualitative agreement with modelling calculation. Surface characterization analysis demonstrates that struvite is the dominant component of precipitate. Fertility value tests show that struvite precipitate could be available as slow-release fertilizer.

A test of the accuracy in transferring the virtual data into the surgical environment was carried out. Differences between the virtually planned and the actual position during surgery of the rapid prototyped guides and the bone plates were investigated. The accuracy of the method was evaluated in terms of the precision of cuts in the mandible, the final positions of the rami and condyles, and the sectioning precision of the fibula. The guide position presented a mean value dislocation of 0.6 mm in the right side and of 4.1 mm in the left side; the cut line of the mandible presented an angular deviation of 2.9° (right) and of 17.5° (left). The right condyle was positioned 2.5 ± 0.05 mm more medial than native position, and the left condyle 5.2 ± 0.05 mm medial. The total length was 0.3 ± 0.05 mm short of the virtually projected length at the inferior margin of the mandible and 1.9 ± 0.05 mm longer than projected at the superior margin. The Prosthetically Guided Maxillofacial Surgery (PGMS) is a viable way to improve the precision of mandibular reconstruction using a fibula free flap.

The addition of octane phenol polyoxyethylene-10 (OP-10) to oleic acid via a reagent-combination technology was carried out and it was shown that OP-10 exhibited synergistic effects in the flotation performance of oleic acid. Single-mineral flotation tests, zeta-potential measurements, total-organic-carbon determination, and scale-up of continuous tests using raw ore were also carried out. Single-mineral flotation tests showed that OP-10 exhibited virtually no collecting performance for apatite, but it improved the flotation performance of oleic acid following its addition to oleic acid in small amounts at low temperature. Zeta-potential measurements and total-organic-carbon determination results indicated that the addition of 2.5% OP-10 to oleic acid increased the absolute value of the apatite surface potential and improved adsorption of oleic acid on the apatite surface at low temperature. A scale-up of the continuous test showed that application of OP-10 with industrial fatty acids led to good synergistic effects and contributed to effective separation of phosphate ore.

The paper focuses on assessing wettability of surfaces modified with ionic liquid solutions. Dialkylimidazolium chlorides have been selected as the test group, because of their immediate availabil-ity and limited previous research. Contact angle of selected ionic liquid solutions have been measured with two methods: capillary rise test and simplified sitting droplet analysis, performed by means of digital camera. During tests the extremely high viscosity of dialkylimidazolium chlorides has been observed to drop rapidly with prolonged exposition to atmospheric moisture and measured experimentally with Karl-Fischer titration and viscosity measurements. Contact angles of selected ionic liquids have been presented.

Purpose: The study of axial loading is essential to determine the properties of intervertebral disc. The objectives of this work are (1) to quantify the mechanical properties of porcine lumbar intervertebral discs under static and cyclic compressive loading, and (2) to determine the parameters of a five-parameter rheological model for porcine and compare them with those obtained for human lumbar intervertebral discs. Methods: Thus, the porcine lumbar motion segments were subjected to quasi-static and dynamic compression tests. The quasi-static tests were used to obtain the static stiffness coefficient at different strain rates, while the data from the cyclic compressive tests were used to both determine the dynamic stiffness coefficient and to be fitted in a 5-parameter model, in order to simulate the creep response of the porcine intervertebral discs. Results: The results demonstrated that dynamic stiffness coefficient of porcine discs is between four and ten times higher than the static stiffness coefficient, depending on load applied. The parameters of the rheological model suggested a low permeability of nucleus and endplate during the fast response of porcine discs. In addition, the fast response in terms of displacement is four times higher than those documented for human discs. Conclusions: This study revealed that care must be taken on the comparison between porcine and human discs, since they present different behaviour under quasi-static and dynamic compressive loading.

Opis:
Accommodation of many channels in dense wavelength division multiplexing networks raises the average power density of the optical networks. This results in severe nonlinear effects in the optical networks. An optimized design of non-zero dispersion shifted fiber with an enormous effective area can overcome this nonlinear effect and also offer a minimum bending loss and splice loss for a dense wavelength division multiplexing system. In this paper, the alpha-peak profile is utilized for calculating electrical field distribution and designing the refractive index profile of the non-zero dispersion shifted fiber. This fiber has a high effective area of about 120 μm2. Conjointly, the accomplished fiber has a very low bending loss of 1.40×10–14 dB/km and reduced splice loss of 4.46×10–3 dB. Due to this high effective area, the dense wavelength division multiplexing network performance is upgraded by diminishing nonlinear effects. In addition, the newly designed fiber has also a very low dispersion slope (0.057 ps/nm2km). Thus, the proposed fiber is optimized to handle high bandwidth and multiple high bit-rate wavelength channels without nonlinear impairments in the 1.55 μm window long-haul dense wavelength division multiplexing systems.

The particulate matter (PM10, PM7, PM4, PM2.5 and PM1) mass concentrations in Bejaia City, Algeria, over the course of one week, from July 8 to July 14, 2015, have been presented for the first time. The study covered eight urban sampling sites and 169 measurements have been obtained. The average city-wide PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations measured during this sampling were 87.8±33.9 and 28.7±10.6 μg/m3, respectively. These results show that the particulate matter levels are high and exceed the World Health Organization Air Quality Guidelines (WHO AQG) and European 24-hour average limit values (50 μg/m3for PM10and 25 fig/m3for PM2.5). The PM1, PM2.5, PM4 and PM7 fractions accounted for 0.15,0.32,0.56 and 0.78, respectively, of the PM10 concentrations. The analysis revealed that variations of PM concentration in the study region were influenced primarily by traffic. Lower PM10 concentrations (21.7 and 33.1 μg/m3) were recorded in residential sites, while higher values (53.1, and 45.2 μg/m3) in city centers.

The purpose of the present study was to compare the prediction performances of three statistical methods, namely, information value (IV), weight of evidence (WoE) and frequency ratio (FR), for landslide susceptibility mapping (LSM) at the east of Constantine region. A detailed landslide inventory of the study area with a total of 81 landslide locations was compiled from aerial photographs, satellite images and field surveys. This landslide inventory was randomly split into a testing dataset (70%) for training the models, and the remaining (30%) was used for validation purpose. Nine landslide-related factors such as slope gradient, slope aspect, elevation, distance to streams, lithology, distance to lineaments, precipitation, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and stream density were used in the landslide susceptibility analyses. The inventory was adopted to analyse the spatial relationship between these landslide factors and landslide occurrences. Based on IV, WoE and FR approaches, three landslide susceptibility zonation maps were categorized, namely, “very high, high, moderate, low, and very low”. The results were compared and validated by computing area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC). From the statistics, it is noted that prediction scores of the FR, IV and WoE models are relatively similar with 73.32%, 73.95% and 79.07%, respectively. However, the map, obtained using the WoE technique, was experienced to be more suitable for the study area. Based on the results, the produced LSM can serve as a reference for planning and decision-making regarding the general use of the land.
