Opis:
Currently there is a decline in the world’s nickel sulfide deposits, which are the main source of this metal. Due to the fact, that more than 70% of nickel reserves are in the form of oxide ores, more attention is nowadays paid on laterites. Leaching processes using different organic acids are widely described in the literature, but there is a lack of works linking influence of leaching process with the surface area and particle size distribution. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to examine how citric acid produced by microorganisms and citric acid added as chemical affected the specific surface and particle size distribution of mineral particles. The laterite ore was obtained from Szklary deposit, Poland. This study also compared the effect of chemical citric acid and filtrate after cultivation of Aspergillus niger on nickel extraction. It was observed that higher nickel recovery correspond to higher surface area of particles. The highest yield of nickel extraction was observed for a citric acid concentration of 1 mol/dm3 (67%). The specific surface area after leaching was 159 m2/g. An analysis of particle size distribution showed increase in the median particle size of particles after leaching with citric acid. It may suggest that dissolution of Polish laterites follows a shrinking core-shrinking particle model.

Opis:
The behaviour of glass beads and polyethylene pellets as the extra bacteria support in the fine black shale ore in the column bed bioreactor was compared. Capillary rise experiments enabled the calculation of the contact angle and the surface free energy of glass beads and polyethylene pellets. The results showed that the support material made up of polyethylene pellets yielded a higher copper extraction, which could be explained by conditions favourable to cell adhesion on the polyethylene surface.

Opis:
Intercrops can play important role in the absorption of CO2 emitted during the combustion of fossil fuels. They allow us to grow additional biomass on agricultural land what leads to the absorption of carbon dioxide in the photosynthesis process. Biomass produced could be used for the production of syngas and biogas. Thus intercrops grown in Poland sequestrate from 1.14 to 1.84 t C/ha globally they sequestrate about 1.9 million t C/year and provide the raw material for the production of 739 million m3 of syngas/year.

Opis:
The presented study aimed to compare the effectiveness of ultrafiltration and filtration through a sand bed during the water treatment process after the coagulation and sedimentation. The study was conducted in two flow-type water treatment systems: the reference and the test system. Both systems functioned continuously with a throughput of 1 m3/h. The research has shown that both processes ensured a very effective removal of post-coagulation suspensions, however, ultrafiltration was more effective. The filtration process allowed a slightly higher removal of organic substances as compared to ultrafiltration. The effectiveness of the removal of organic substances was determined by the biological activity of sand beds, which is not allowed in the ultrafiltration process. Besides, during the filtration process, aluminum remaining after coagulation was more effectively removed. In turn, the ultrafiltration process ensured an almost 100% effectiveness in reducing the total microorganism cell count, while the effectiveness of the filtration process was approximately half of that. In the end, the possibility of replacing the filtration process with the ultrafiltration process is determined by the costs of both processes.

Opis:
Restoration of mandible discontinuity defects continues as a challenge for maxillofacial surgeons. Despite the development of algorithms for reconstruction plates fixation and autogenous grafting techniques, complications are still encountered including screw loosening, bone resorption or delayed/incomplete union. The aim of the study was to analyze the possibility of obtaining bone union in the aspect of biomechanical conditions of two mandible reconstructions using an autogenous iliac crest bone graft stabilized with a reconstruction plate, and to attempt to predict patient outcomes based on strength parameters obtained by the finite element analysis. The authors of the present paper were trying to determine to what extent the reconstruction model and changes occurring in hard tissues of the bone and autogenous graft (simulated by changes in material properties) might help predict individual patient courses. The effort of reconstruction plates was defined using the values of the von Mises stress (σHMH) while the effort of bones was determined based on the values of strain intensity εint. The results of the above mentioned simulations are presented in the form of bar graphs and strain/stress distribution maps. Our strength analyses indicate that uncomplicated healing of grafts fixed with reconstruction plates requires that the initial loading of the stomatognatic system should not result in strain intensity exceeding 20–40 [×10–4]. This range of strain intensity evokes an increase in the mineral phase. The state of nonunion between the mandibular bone and the graft might result from prolonged periods of insufficient loading of the mandible during treatment.
