Opis:
Oxygen permeability seems to be the most important parameter characterize the contact lens. Lenses, which permeable more oxygen to the cornea are safer, reduce the risk of infection and provide greater comfort of wearing. Oxygen permeability of contact lenses might be calculated by analysis of porosity of its surface. With using special program the size and number of pores on definite area was calculated and dependence of permeability and hydration on porosity were established.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of numerical analysis aimed at determining the state of stresses and displacements of compression plate used in osteosynthesis of tibia, carried out by applying finite element method using the ANSYS program. The analysis took into account two variants of the osteosynthesis. Variant I included the osteosynthesis in which plate was attached directly to the bone, in variant II, the plate was moved away from the bones by about 5 mm. Biomechanical characteristics of the corrective osteotomy plate–tibia was determined for implants made of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The boundary conditions adopted for the analysis reflect phenomena occurring in a real system. Based on the results of the analysis relative displacements and reduced stresses in various components were determined as a function of the applied load within the range of F = 500–1500 N. The maximum forces, both variant I and variant II determined during analysis, ensure that the generated stress does not exceed yield strength of the material and compressive strength of the bone, and do not exceed safety movement in the fracture gap. In addition, it was found that the locking of the compressive plate to the bone has a little effect on the distribution of displacements and stresses on the plate–tibia system in the case of a simple fracture.

Opis:
The use of terahertz-based techniques has grown very fast since they are capable of performing evaluations at molecular level, being very suitable for the analysis of biological samples and biomaterials such as those for contact lenses. These biomaterials are continuously evolving to enhance the lens wearer’s comfort by improving their hydration state and surface wettability. Therefore, this study examines a novel terahertz system for the assessment of the temporary in vitro dehydration of hydrogel contact lenses, which provides a new index to assess their state of hydration. Several conventional and silicone hydrogel contact lenses and lens care solutions were analysed. Traditional methods such as the gravimetric determination of water content and the measurement of the static contact angle were also carried out for the validation of the developed system. The dehydration rate measurements of contact lenses obtained with the proposed system correlated with the values provided by traditional methods. As a whole, conventional hydrogel contact lenses exhibited the lowest values for dehydration rate. The tests conducted on various solutions showed a correlation between the wetting action of the solution and the dehydration rate of the contact lens material.

Opis:
The development of computational and numerical methods provides the option to study the contact mechanics and wear of hip resurfacing devices. The importance of these techniques is justified by the extensive amount of testing and experimental work required to verify and improve current orthopaedic implant devices. As the demands for device longevity is increasing, it is as important as ever to study techniques for providing much needed orthopaedic hip implant solutions. Through the use of advanced computer aided design and the finite element method, contact analysis of hip resurfacing devices was carried out by developing both three-dimensional and twodimensional axisymmetric models whilst considering the effects of loading conditions and material properties on the contact stresses. Following on from this, the three-dimensional model was used in combination with a unique programme to develop wear simulations and obtain cumulative wear for both the acetabular cup and femoral head simultaneously.

Opis:
Stripe wear occurs when the components of hip prostheses move a sufficient distance laterally to contact the edge of the acetabular cup, causing abnormally high contact stresses. In this research, edge loading contact of prosthetic hip is analyzed in the most commonly used material pairs. The contact dimensions and maximal contact pressure are investigated in mutative normal edge loading with 3 different inclination angles (15°, 20°, 25°) and in alterable edge torus radius with edge loading of 2500 N and inclination of 20°. A computational case was conducted for a 14 mm radius alumina ceramic bearing with a radial clearance of 0.1 mm using a normal edge loading ranged from 0 N to 3000 N. Additionally, the Hertzian theory successfully captures principal curvature trends of the edge torus on the influence of maximal contact pressure and obtains the appropriate edge radius range for lower maximal contact pressure. This work elucidates the methods of applying classical contact theory to design the edge radius of hip bearings to better resist severe edge loading contact stresses and reduce the stripe wear.

The free volume holes and light transmission of hydrogel and silicone-hydrogel polymer contact lenses were investigated. As the material, the Proclear family (omafilcon A) of hydrogel contact lenses and the Biofinity family (comfilcon A) of silicone-hydrogel contact lenses were used. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy was used to characterize geometrical sizes and fractions of the free volume holes in the investigated samples. There was a clear difference in the size of free volume holes and the fractional free volume between silicone-hydrogel and hydrogel polymer contact lenses. These changes are shown by a thorough analysis of the long-lived component of lifetime of ortho-positronium. At the same time, UV-vis-NIR in the spectral range 200-1000 nm studies were performed on the same samples of contact lenses spectrometry.

Opis:
Ohmic contacts to AlGaN/GaN heterostructures, which have low contact resistance and a good surface morphology, are required for the development of high temperature, high power and high frequency electronic devices. The paper presents the investigation of a Ti/Al based Ti/Al/Ni/Au ohmic contact to AlGaN/GaN heterostructures. Multilayer metallization of Ti/Al/Ni/Au was evaporated by an electron gun (titanium and nickel layers) and a resistance heater (aluminum and gold layers). The contacts were annealed by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) system in a nitrogen ambient atmosphere over the temperature range from 715 to 865 °C. The time of the annealing process was 60 seconds. The chemical analysis, formation and deterioration mechanisms of Ti/Al/Ni/Au ohmic contacts to AlGaN/GaN heterostructures were studied as a function of the annealing process conditions by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS).

Opis:
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze three patterns of mandible angle fracture treatment by means of the finite element analysis. Methods: Investigation has been based on the mandible geometry reconstructed with use of hospitalized patient CT data. The KLS Martin mini-plates with corresponding screws were used to establish proper fracture stabilization. Models were run assuming isotropic and elasto-plastic material properties of connecting devices and cortical bone. The main masticatory muscles and artificial temporomandibular joint have been incorporated to assure mandible physiological movement. The gage loading has been applied in three different locations to cover wider range of possible mastication loading cases during daily routine. A different contact conditions have been applied to the fracture plane to simulate both load bearing and sharing behaviors. Prepared FEM models reflect the most frequently used surgery’s approaches to mandible angle fracture treatment. A specific nomenclature has been introduced to describe particular model. The tension plate, with one connecting mini-plate, two-point fixation and combined fixation, both using two mini-plates respectively. Results: Performed analysis allowed for a detailed estimation of the mini-plate connection response under the applied gauge loading. The equivalent stress within the mini-plates and surrounding cortical bone have been compared between all models. Regarding the fracture plane, the contact status and pressure have been considered. Conclusions: The combined fixation model, acting as a biplanar fastener system, presents the highest flexibility and connection efficiency.

Opis:
The vascular cannulation is associated with a number of complications. The aim of this work was to study the composition and distribution of the film covering the surfaces of Mahurkar Maxid and Palindrome catheters, which were removed from the body of long-term hemodialysis patients. Moreover, the roughness and contact angle of the catheters were evaluated. Methods: Two brand new (as a reference) and thirty used catheters were the subject of the study. Their implantation period lasted from 4 months to a year and the reason for removal was the production of another vascular access or obstruction. Surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscope and goniometer. Results: The inner surfaces of the used catheters were covered with a film of various complexity which includes a plurality of protein, blood cell counts and the crystals. The closer to the distal part the film becomes more complex and multi-layered. Even the surfaces of brand new catheter were not completely smooth. The only significant difference between analyzed models was the presence of thrombus in the distal part of Mahurkar Maxid catheters, not in the Palindrome. Conclusions: The distal part of the catheters is the place most exposed to obstruction and infection, which may be due to not reaching the anticoagulant agent into this part. Not only the occurrence of side holes affects the formation of thrombus, but also their quantity, geometry and distribution which effect on fluid mechanics. The surface of the catheters needs to improvement to minimize the occurrence of defects and cracks.
