Opis:
The most common measure of inequality used in scientific research is the Gini index. In 2007, Zenga proposed a new index of inequality that has all the appropriate properties of an measure of equality. In this paper, we compared the Gini and Zenga indexes, calculating these quantities for the few distributions frequently used for approximating distributions of income, that is, the lognormal, gamma, inverse Gauss, Weibull and Burr distributions. Within this limited examination, we have observed three main differences. First, the Zenga index increases more rapidly for low values of the variation and decreases more slowly when the variation approaches intermediate values from above. Second, the Zenga index seems to be better predicted by the variation. Third, although the Zenga index is always higher than the Gini one, the ordering of some pairs of cases may be inverted.

In this study, flotation tests were conducted with purified pyrite and ore samples. The collectors employed were anionic and cationic type such as potassium ethlyl-amyl xanthate, Tomamine M73 and Resanol Bal. According to the flotation tests, it was found that pyrite floated at low pH and depressed at high pH values with xanthates. On the other hand, in the case of cationic collectors which are Tomamine M73 (alkyl ether amine, an amphoteric surfactant) and Resanol Bal (N-3-tridecyloxy propyl 1-3 diamine, branched acetate) pyrite floated at high pH values. It was shown that amine type collectors could be efficient to selectively float pyrite from chalcopyrite at alkali pH ranges in the case of ore samples.

Opis:
Diaphragm walls are deep embedded earth retaining structures. They also act as a part of the foundation. Geotechnical codes of practice from various countries provide procedures for the analysis of deep foundations. Not many standards are available that directly regulate the analysis of diaphragm walls. This paper compares the analysis of diaphragm walls performed using the foundation codes of different countries. Codes including EN 1997-1, BS 8002, BS 8004, BS EN 1538, AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, AS 4678, AS 5100.3, Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual, CAN/CSA S6, IS 9556 and IS 4651 are chosen for the study. Numerical studies and calculations are done using the finite element software Plaxis 2d. Comparative study is performed based on the values of displacements and the forces developed. Study also evaluates the effect of differences in partial safety factors. The outcome of research emphasises the need for development of comprehensive analysis procedures.

Surface property plays a very important role on coal hydrophobicity which determines flotation behavior of fine coals. However, coal spontaneous combustion makes coal suffer both oxidation and high temperature heating processes. Coals from the outside of coal piles primarily suffer oxidation (or combustion process) while coals from the inside of coal piles primarily suffer high temperature heating process. It is necessary to investigate the changes in surface properties of coal before and after high temperature heating process. In this investigation, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), surface area (BET) and contact angle measurements were used to indicate the changes in surface properties of anthracite coal before and after high temperature heating process. Throughout this study, surface properties of coal changed significantly after high temperature heating process. Meanwhile, coal hydrophobicity can be also reduced after high temperature heating.

This paper investigates the polarization persistence of linear polarization and circular polarization in foggy environments from ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (NIR). Using polarization tracking Monte Carlo simulation for varying particle size, wavelength, refractive index, and detection distance, it is shown that linear polarization and circular polarization exhibit different persistence performance. For wet haze of 0.6 μm mean diameter particles, right-handed circular polarization shows better persistence than parallel polarization at wavelengths of 0.36, 0.543 and 1.0 μm. But parallel polarization shows better persistence at wavelengths of 1.55, 2.1 and 2.4 μm. For wet haze of 1.0 μm mean diameter particles, right-handed circular polarization shows better persistence at wavelengths of 0.36, 0.543, 1.0 and 1.55 μm. But parallel polarization shows better persistence at wavelengths of 2.1 and 2.4 μm. For wet haze of 2.0 μm particles and radiation fog and advection fog, right-handed circular polarization shows better persistence at all simulated wavelengths. In short, right-handed circular polarization persists better than parallel polarization in most scenarios, however, with increasing wavelength and decreasing particle size, parallel polarization gradually persists better than right-handed circular polarization. Finally, anisotropy factor for various particle models is used to map the propagation law of right-handed circular polarization and parallel polarization.

The design process in geotechnical engineering requires the most accurate mapping of soil. The difficulty lies in the spatial variability of soil parameters, which has been a site of investigation of many researches for many years. This study analyses the soilmodeling problem by suggesting two effective methods of acquiring information for modeling that consists of variability from cone penetration test (CPT). The first method has been used in geotechnical engineering, but the second one has not been associated with geotechnics so far. Both methods are applied to a case study in which the parameters of changes are estimated. The knowledge of the variability of parameters allows in a long term more effective estimation, for example, bearing capacity probability of failure.

In this study, firstly, enrichment experiments were carried out on the epithermal gold ore belonging to the Konya-İnlice region containing 2.38 ppm Au-containing oxide type ore and 1.39 ppm Au-containing sulfur ore with using Falcon device as a gravity enrichment method. In these group experiments, the effects of parameters such as centrifugal force, bowl type effect, and a solid ration of feeding were investigated. As the second enrichment method, the conventional flotation technique was applied. In these enrichment experiments, appropriate grain size, flotation time, amount of reagent, and amount of depressant, and pH effect were investigated. The results of these tests showed that while a concentrate assaying 4.79 ppm Au content was obtained with 7% recovery with Falcon Concentrator, a concentrate with 8.37 ppm Au content with 36.37 % recovery was obtained with flotation tests. Thus, if the middlings were theoretically distributed, the final concentrate recovery increased to 78.10% recovery increases to 78.10%.

The functional gait problems encountered by stroke patients include impaired balance, abnormal gait pattern with marked asymmetry, pathological trunk and spinal motion. Many different methods of physiotherapy are used to improve functional ability (especially gait) in stroke patients, but their efficacy and outcome are often not objectively assessed. The goal of this paper is to compare two therapeutic programs: one that is traditionally used in our rehabilitation facilities (exercises in lying position, “open chain” exercises, isolated movements of extremities with trunk stabilization) and the new one (exercises in vertical position, sitting or standing, “closed chain” exercises involving whole paretic side of the body). Fifty one stroke patients, aged 34 to 79 years, participated in the study. Patients were randomly allocated to one of the two groups. Patients underwent clinical assessment (Fugl-Meyer, Rivermead Motor Assessment, Berg Balance Scale) and instrumented gait analysis (using six-camera VICON 460 system) simultaneously three times: prior to the beginning of the rehabilitation program, after 6 weeks of the program, and after another 6 weeks of physiotherapy, at the end of rehabilitation program. Results demonstrated that both rehabilitation programs improved the gait function and clinical status in patients suffering from stroke. Despite the differences between the two programs the progress achieved by the patients in locomotor function is similar. Two equivalent physiotherapy programs could be applied during rehabilitation process depending on the patient’s individual preferences and needs, as the amount of functional improvement provided by them is comparable.

To develop the sorption efficiency of heavy metals: Cd(II), Co(II), Zn(II) and Pb(II) ions the biochar was modified by chitosan, FeSO4 and NaBH4. The morphology, physical structure and chemical composition of the biochar based sorbents were characterized by the scanning electron miscroscopy method, N2 adsorption and desorption isotherms, X-ray diffractometry as well as the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopywith the attenuated total reflectance analyses. The research of M(II) ions sorption was carried out as a function of pH (2-6), interaction time (0-360 minutes) and temperature (293, 313, 333 K). The maximum sorption was obtained by the ChBC for Zn(II) ions - 19.23 mg/g and for MBC-Pb(II) - 19.11 mg/g. Different kinetic models as well as both isotherm and thermodynamic equations were used the sorption data modelling. For Cd(II), Co(II) and Zn(II) ions the nonlinear regression of the Elovich equation gave the best fit for the experimental data. On the other hand, for Pb(II) ions, the nonlinear forms of pseudo first order and pseudo second order show a better match. The value of the correlation coefficient >0.960 determined from the Freundlich isotherm model is the highest suggesting a good fit to the experimental data. The thermodynamic parameters: ΔG°, ΔH° and ΔS° were listed and indicated that the process is spontaneous and endothermic in nature. The desorption efficiency was determined with the use of nitric, hydrochloric and sulfuric acids and the largest desorption yield for Pb(II)-ChBC equal 99.5 % was gained applying HNO3.

A Jet Diffuser Flotation Column (JDFC) is a newly designed flotation device which resembles the Jameson cell (JFC) in terms of operational principles, but it has an important difference regarding to the structural characteristics in the downcomer. The main difference of JDFC is the diffuser type of downcomer which has been designed using the hydrodynamic consideration and fluid mechanics principles. The aim of the design was to increase the device efficiency for coarse particle flotation. Therefore, the turbulence occurring at the end of the downcomer was reduced, and the detachment probability of the coarse particle decreased. In addition, a homogenous and stable foam zone in the cell was obtained. According to the experimental results carried out in a pilot scale showed that not only higher flotation performance in comparison to the Jameson cell was obtained specifically for the coarse particles but also the quiescent froth layer was acquired under the given conditions. In these experiments, a vertical pipe of JDFC having an inlet diameter of 60 mm and outlet diameters of 115, 125 and 135 mm was used with the separation tank with the diameter of 390 mm. By using the data, the pilot scale JDFC with the 4100 mm vertical pipe integrated with the separation tank was produced, and the flotation tests were carried out by using a talc ore. Finally, the talc recovery of 90% was obtained using the JDFC for the particle size of 350 μm.

Sulphidic tailings from Finnish Hitura nickel mine and Pyhäsalmi multi-metal mine were leached using sulphuric acid and bioleached. The aim was to recover minor amounts of valuable Cu, Ni, Zn and Mn. Both tailings consisted mainly of iron and magnesium-containing minerals and acid neutralizing minerals. The solution after chemical leaching tests contained mostly iron and magnesium, in Hitura up to 11 g/dm3 Fe and 38 g/dm3 Mg while in Pyhäsalmi 8–9 g/dm3 Fe and 4 g/dm3 Mg. Amount of these metals was 20–100-fold larger than amount of valuable metals, which were typically 100-300 mg/dm3. Problems in chemical leaching were high consumption of acid and poor selectivity. Bioleaching using iron and sulphur oxidizing bacteria was more selective towards the valuable metals. Both in leaching and bioleaching the high concentration of iron and magnesium in solution will make metals recovery challenging.

Recovery of gold and gold-containing sulfide mineral particles requires multiple-stage recovery processes starting from the grinding circuits to avoid over-grinding of the liberated gold particles. Due to high density, these gold grains tend to follow the hydrocyclone underflow, and a significant amount of metal increases in the circulating load. Therefore, in recent years the grinding circuits have been designed to improve the recovery of free gold/gold-containing particles in the grinding circuit. Gravity separation (centrifugal gravity separators) and flash flotation processes are commonly used for gold recovery in the grinding circuit. This study used a methodology based on modeling-simulation studies to assess various flowsheet configurations involving flash flotation, gravity separation, and the conventional sulfide mineral flotation process. The standard GRG, flash flotation, and rougher kinetic tests were used for the model development of each process. The laboratory tests and simulation studies showed that gold and sulfur recoveries in flash flotation were approximately 7% and 17% higher than that of the gravity separation process. However, the grade of the gravity concentrate was considerably higher. Therefore, one of these unit processes or their combinations can be selected depending on the ore characteristics and the aim of the recovery process. Simulation studies were performed to illustrate the gold recovery performance of various flowsheet configurations. This methodology could be used effectively for flowsheet development, particularly for greenfield projects.

Research of biological structures such as bones are important part of concern of nowadays engineering. Finite element method is commonly utilized tool in such analyses, alongside traditional laboratory tests. Increasingly frequent utilization of numerical methods results from the accuracy of their results, as well as the difficult access to real samples. An important aspect of every analysis is correct mimic of the boundary conditions. Due to the high complexity of the biological structures, many simplifications are introduced to the instrumentation systems. In the article is presented comparison of two test stands utilized in research of mandible bone. The first one recreates simplified load conditions, the second one, more precise, accurately mimics real working conditions. Comparison was performed basing on distribution of the displacement on the line situated around the bone. The displacement distribution indicates the differences between two stations. For the simplified one, symmetrical work of the mandible can be noticed, while in detailed system, there is significant difference in deformation on both sides of the mandible bone (up to 42%). The simplified measuring station could characterize by more reproducible results regardless of the considered mandible side. The results obtained from the detailed test station may be affected by an error resulting from the initial asymmetry of the model’s geometry.

There are commonly accepted and objective decision rules, which are consistent with rationality, for example stochastic dominance rules. But, as can be seen in many research studies in behavioral economics, decision makers do not always act rationally. Rules based on cumulative prospect theory or almost stochastic dominance are relatively new tools which model real choices. Both approaches take into account some behavioral factors. The aim of this paper is to check the consistency of orders of the valuations of random alternatives based on these behavioral rules. The order of the alternatives is generated by a preference relation over the decision set. In this paper, we show that the methodology for creating rankings based on total orders can be used for the preference relations considered, because they enable comparison of all the elements in a set of random alternatives. For almost second degree stochastic dominance, this is possible due to its particular properties, which stochastic dominance does not possess.

Opis:
The effects of ozone oxidation and ultrasonic pretreatment on anaerobic sludge bio-processing have been studied. Ultrasound (9690 kJ/kg total solids (TS) of specific energy) and ozone (0.1 g O3/kg TS) were applied to sludge samples preceding anaerobic sludge digestion for disintegration purpose. Organic matter reduction and methane production were measured, as well as physicochemical characteristics (pH, alkalinity, and particles size) and dewatering characteristics of sludge during semi-batch anaerobic digestion. For each treatment, 5 days of sludge retention time were applied on mesophilic conditions for 30 days operation period. The highest volatile solids reduction was obtained with ozone oxidation. Moreover, disintegrated sludge with ozone oxidation and ultrasonic pretreatment provided 55% and 49% higher methane production comparing to the raw sludge, respectively. In terms of dewatering characteristics of digested sludge, ultrasonic treatment led to an increase in the sludge’s resistance to dewatering. This negative effect was not observed in ozone oxidation.
