Opis:
Biosorption of Zn(II) and Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions onto organic waste – orange peel, hazelnut shell, and walnut shell was studied using batch adsorption experiments. In the biosorption studies, equilibrium metal ion concentration was determined. Experimental data obtained were analysed in terms of Freundlich, Langmuir, Temkin, Dubinin–Radushkevich, Redlich–Peterson, Sips, Toth, and Khan isotherms. The results of the study showed that orange peel, hazelnut shell, and walnut shell can be adequately used as low-cost alternatives for the removal of Zn(II) and Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions with maximum sorption capacities of 15.51 and 19.8 mg/g, 11.55 and 16.65 mg/g, and 26.60 and 21.10 mg/g, respectively. The highest removal efficiency of Zn(II) and Cd(II) ions was obtained for hazelnut shells. The process was fast and about 90% of metal ions were removed by all the studied biosorbents. The sorption process was possibly chemisorption occurring on a heterogeneous surface.

Opis:
Mass balance of selected heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Pb, Hg, Zn, Cd) released from waste into leachate during 8 years of landfill exploitation has been calculated. The average release of all analyzed heavy metals did not exceed 1.7%. Heavy metals released in the largest quantities were Cr (0.025 –1.685%), Hg (0.033–1.540%) and Cd (0.082–0.701%). Release of Pb, Cu, Zn was 0.008–0.152%; 0.012–0.085% and 0.007–0.152%, respectively. Cr and Hg do not form an insoluble sulfide precipitate and that is why they are released in a larger amount. Cd and Pb concentrations are positively correlated with the amount of the atmospheric precipitation and the amount of leachates, which means that infiltrating rainfall can leach out these metals from waste. Favorable conditions for leaching of these metals are probably a result of their precipitation as carbonates. A strong correlation between Cu, Zn, and Cr indicates they do not precipitate as carbonates and further they can be subject to desorption processes. In the case of Cu, Zn, Cr and Hg, a positive correlation with the amount of deposited waste was also observed.

Opis:
The presented work aimed at evaluating a fertilizing mixture of sewage sludge, brown coal and brown coal ash enriched with potassium mineral fertilizer on mobility of heavy metals. The effects of fertilization were compared with the effects obtained from fertilization with: sewage sludge, mixture of sewage sludge and mineral fertilizer, mixture of brown coal and mineral fertilizers and mineral fertilizers. Soil was slightly contaminated with zinc and cadmium (II°) and showed elevated concentration of lead (I°). The uptake of heavy metals by plants depended on the concentration of bioavailable metal forms determined with 0.01 M CaCl2 and 1 M HC1. Fertilization with the mixture of sewage sludge, brown coal, brown coal ash enriched with potassium mineral fertilizer resulted in the reduction in the concentrations of zinc by 30-38%, cadmium by 28-34% and lead by 11-50% in plant biomass compared to soil with no fertilization.

Opis:
Comparative evaluation of metal occurrence was conducted for sludge originating from three wastewater treatment plants, which differ in wastewater treatment methods, processing and drying of sludge. It was demonstrated that metals (Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, Cd, Cr) in sludge are mainly bound to organic-sulfide fraction. Zinc was also present in significant amounts in hydrated iron and manganese oxide fraction, nickel and cadmium in exchangeable-carbonate fraction, whereas lead in residue fraction. In ash obtained after calcination at 600 °C occurred mainly metal enriched nearly insoluble compound fraction (residual fraction). Metal accumulation in such non-mobile fraction is advantageous with respect to soil-water environment protection.

Opis:
Chromium(VI) ions were removed from industrial wastewater. In this regard, a rig was fabricated carrying alkaline anion resin. Various experiments were carried out by varying pH, temperature and volumetric flow rate of solution by employing a rig to study the kinetics of the ion exchange process. The rate constant (k) and maximum solid phase concentration of exchanged solute (q0) were calculated using the Thomson equation to scale up the purification process of industrial runoff of chromium(VI) from the tanning, photography and ceramic industry. Experimental optimization revealed that developed setup will remove chromium(VI) to a level of 5 mg/dm3 from 300 mg/dm3 in 40 000 dm3 of wastewater. To achieve the best results for the flow rate of 10 000 3 3/day, 12.03 kg of anionic resin were recommended by fixing the pH of the setup at 7.4 while maintaining the treatment temperature at 20 °C.

Opis:
The study was conducted on three specially prepared test areas along main streets of Bialystok. The experimental plots were sown with two lawn grass mixtures: Eko and Roadside, and three doses of sewage sludge 0.0 (control), 7.5 kg/m2 and 15.0 kg/m2 were used. The calculated bioconcentration factor made possible to determine the mobility of the various metals from the soil solution to the aerial parts of plants. The obtained results showed that the plants absorbed Cd, Zn, Cu easier than Pb and Ni suggesting a high mobility, in particular of Cd, Zn, Cu, and reflects the easiness extraction of those metals by plants. Significant correlations between concentrations of metals in soil and grass were observed, nickel in soil was significantly correlated with Cd, Zn and Cu in plants, while the Zn content in soil with the level of Cu in plants.
