Opis:
Impurities which are produced in the process of intensive fish breeding usually accumulate at the bottom of ponds and pools where the fattening is conducted, resulting in sludge rich in organic matter and biogenic elements. The sludge, consisting mainly of fish faeces and the fodder uneaten by the fish, accumulates in special zones intended for this purpose. As the experiment shows, the ability of the sludge to yield water is very poor and the sludge should be classed as poorly dewatering. Therefore, before it was dewatered in a laboratory the sludge was conditioned with inorganic compounds and cationic polyelectrolytes in order to facilitate the process. The inorganic compounds used for conditioning were: technical grade iron (III) sulphate – trade name “PIX 113”, aluminum sulphate and calcium oxide. The sludge was dewatered in a reduced pressure device, equipped with a Büchner funnel, which enables the determination of the specific resistance. The collected sludge contained variable amounts of dry matter and organic matter. The study presents the results of determination of the specific resistance, final dewatering of sludge and its content of organic matter, depending on the type and amount of the conditioning agent applied. The results also allowed the determination of the doses which optimally facilitate the dewatering process and reduce the degree of sludge hydration. The process effectiveness was found to be dependent mainly on organic matter content in sludge. It was also found that the specific resistance was most reduced by cationic polyelectrolytes, while the final hydration was the lowest when calcium oxide was used. The determined optimal doses depended on organic matter content and ranged: for iron sulphate from 0.7 to 15% (d.m.), for aluminum sulphate from 0.6 to 15% (d.m.), for calcium oxide from 7 to 30% (d.m.), for cationic polyelectrolytes from 0.064 to 0.19% (d.m.) of sludge. No statistically significant differences were found in dewatering effectiveness between iron sulphate and aluminium sulphate.

Opis:
In the research work the influence of temperature, mixing intensity and aeration on heavy metals release from two types of industrial heavy metal containing wastes - combustion ash and galvanic waste - was analyzed. The bioleaching process was carried out using the culture based on the activated sludge as a source of active, sulphur-oxidizing microflora. The presence of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans bacteria was proved using PCR technique. The culture was initially adapted to the growth in presence of 1% sulphur, up to the moment it achieved pH 1-2. The experiment was carried out in four variants, with different process parameters: temperature 22 degrees C, mixing 125 rpm, without aeration; temperature 22 degrees C, mixing 50 rpm, without aeration; temperature 37 degrees C, mixing 125 rpm, without aeration; temperature 22 degrees C, mixed and aerated with compressed air. After 14 days the amount of heavy metals released from the wastes was determined using ASA method to evaluate the process effectiveness in different experimental conditions. Mean value, standard deviation and variation coefficient was calculated. The effectiveness of heavy metals removal from the ash was significantly higher than the galvanic sludge bioleaching, in which only cadmium and chromium was effectively released (with the average effectiveness of 14.8-47.8% of Cd and 12.5-90,6% of Cr, depending on the experimental variant). In case of the combustion ash, the average removal efficiencies were: 1.1-22% of Zn, 04-12.3% of Cu, 2.8-19.7% of Pb, 3.4-6.7% of Cd, 2.8-52.2% of Ni and 43.8-87.4% of Cr, depending on process parameters. The increase of temperature from 22 to 37 degrees C resulted in the increased effectiveness of almost all metals from both tested wastes. Cadmium was the only metal that was leached better in 22 degrees C. In case of galvanic waste, Cd was released more effectively in cultures with mixing intensity of 125 rpm, and in the culture without aeration, while the aeration was favorable to Cr release. For the ash the additional aeration increased the removal of Cu, Cd, Ni and Cr. Copper, lead, nickel and chromium were released effectively using the 50 rpm mixing but zinc - in 125 rpm. The influence of the mixing intensity on cadmium bioleaching from the ash was not observed. The research indicated that the influence of tested parameters depended on the type of the waste as well as the kind of the metal. It is probably influenced by the other factors like the form of the metal in the waste, that should be a subject of further investigations.

Opis:
Scarcity of fresh water, forced many countries to get their water needs, or part of it, by means of saline water desalination. Reverse osmosis (RO) systems are useful tools in this concern. In case the grid electricity is not available or costly, photovoltaic (PV) power is necessary to derive RO systems. The present paper is concerned with providing a methodology for complete sizing and design of a photovoltaic reverse osmosis (PVRO) system in Egypt. Egypt has very favorable solar energy. A computer program was constructed to solve the mathematical equations of the model to get the numerical values. The program is capable of calculating the solar irradiation for any city in Egypt. Calculations and selection of the RO system with all connected pumps, the peak PV power needed, and the actual PV area were performed for different water demands ranging from 1-100 m3/day, and various water total dissolved solids (TDSs) of 5000, 15000, and 30000 mg/l. The cost of the complete PVRO system was also determined. The concern of the paper is related to water desalination and solar energy, which are responsible for our existence. The work also aims toward sustainable and clean environment via utilizing solar energy.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of snow contamination collected from roadsides and parks of Czestochowa in these areas which are out of the impact of a transport. The study was conducted within 2009–2011, in which 120 samples were tested in general. In snowmelt and rain waters that are brought to the sewer or land there are the following pollutants such as: suspended solids, hydrocarbons, heavy metals, biogenic compounds, and even bacteriological contamination. The scope of the research included: pH, total suspended solids, COD and heavy metals in waste water coming into the sewer. On the basis of the survey and analysis of the literature data it is possible to admit the high variation in pollutant concentrations in snow cover, mainly related to the place of sampling. It should also be noted that the other factors, such as: the length of snow cover, the outside temperature, the duration of test runs, the direction of the winds, in the case of the particular type of a substance thawing roads, have affected the results of measurements substantially as evidenced by their differentiation to the point for further measurements. The samples of snow from the sides of roads and parking areas have been characterized by a high content of suspended solids falling within the broad range from 165 to 1325 mg/dm3, COD values ranged from 89.0 to 825.0 mg O2/dm3. The pH of the snow stood at the level of 4.75–6.50. The analysis of the results has shown that the vast majority of the samples has been characterized by a natural or light acidity. The pH value was associated with a place and time of sampling. Most of the snow samples, collected from roadsides with heavy traffic and parking spaces, pointed to their acidic or slightly acidic character. The average content of heavy metals: Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu and Ni within the snow was generally low, which could be due to the fact that the tests were performed within metals concentration in water after the filtration of a suspension. It should be pointed out, however, that the snow from these areas that are exposed to the direct impact of transport, contained more metals for several times, compared with the periphery of busy roads or parking lots. On this basis it can be concluded that the main source of pollution of snow cover was, as analyzed, the catchment traffic, much less air pollution from the other sources. Therefore, the concentration of pollutants in snow cover areas directly adjacent to roads and parking spaces, due to the high concentration of pollutions, ought to be monitored. It should be paid attention to the need to standardize the procedures within sampling the snow.
