In the paper selected problems related to diagnostics of onboard generators and alternators fitted with control systems are discussed. Problems refer to commutator generators and synchronous single- and threephase alternators. Special attention is paid to commutation effects. Results of incorrectness and possibility to detect them are discussed. There are also discussed effects associated with changes in a character of pulsation, which occur during shortings or insulation clearances in rotor or stator wiring. Possibility of diagnosis of generator’s or alternator’s parts by means of analysis of pulsation component parameters is indicated. In the case of alternators a number of diagnostic methods based on observation of changes in shape of voltage or frequency modulation, is discussed. This allows to detect many mechanical or electrical faults of generators, alternators or their control systems.

There has been a rapidly growing interest in the use of composite and polymer materials for the construction of marine propellers for over 20 years. The main advantages of these materials are a reduction in the weight of the propeller, increased efficiency due to the hydroelasticity effect, a reduction of the hydroacoustic signature, and a cost reduction for serial production. This paper presents an overview of diagnostic methods that can be applied at the design level and during the operation of marine propellers made of polymeric materials. Non-invasive contact and non-contact-based diagnostic techniques for evaluating the technical state of the propeller are reviewed, and the advantages and disadvantages of qualitative and quantitative methods are identified. Operational diagnostic procedures for propellers are areessential for the safety of vessels at sea. Finally, the structure of a diagnostic system is proposed. It combined diagnosis process with the genesis of damage and the prognosis of the technical condition, i.e. production and in-service diagnostics.

Steam turbines constitute fluid flow machines which are used for driving engines of power plants, merchant and naval ships. They are commonly applied in power industry to driving electric generators. One of the impotant elements which affect efficiency of steam turbines used in power industry and for ship propulsion is state of labyrinth sealings whose aim is to minimize losses associated with steam leakage within turbine casing. Until now to assess state of labyrinth sealings has been only possible after stopping the turbine and its dismantling in order to determine values of clearances in the sealings. This paper presents a method which makes it possible to assess state of labyrinth sealings without the necessity of stopping and dismantling the machine. This is the method which allows to assess on-line state of machine sealings during its operation.

In the paper possibility of applying neural model to obtaining patterns of proper operation for fluid flow in turbine stagefor fluid-flow diagnostics is discussed. Main differences between Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solvers and neural model is given, also limitations and advantages of both are considered. Time of calculations of both methods was given, also possibilities of shortening that time with preserving the accuracy of the calculations are discussed. Gathering training data set and neural networks architecture is presented in detail. Range of work of neural model was given. Required input data for neural model and reason why it is different than in computational fluid dynamics solvers isexplained. Results obtained with neural model in 21 tests are discussed. Arithmetic mean and median of relative errors of recreating distribution of pressure and temperature are shown. Achieved results are analysed.

Severe winters and sweltering summers which more and more often occur nowadays are the reason why machinery designers face many difficulties when designing devices which will be serviceable in extreme ambient conditions. Hence, defining the principles and conditions of safe operation of hydraulically driven machines and devices is essential for their designers and operators. For this reasons the author did a series of tests of hydraulic component and systems in thermal shock conditions (cooled-down component were supplied with hot working medium). In such conditions, starting parameters of the selected hydraulic component and systems which secured safety of their operation were determined. The experimental tests were carried out in the laboratory of the Chair of Hydraulics and Pneumatics, Gdańsk University of Technology.

They gave answer to the question how the effective clearance changes in such conditions and what parameters it depends on. Based on temperature graphs acquired from tests of heating up elements of hydraulic components it is possible to determine precisely change of clearance between cooperating elements.

The article presents theoretical principles of image processing in digital endoscopy which makes use of a miniaturised spectral scanner “PhaseProbe” designed by General Inspection Technologies LP, the producer of the measuring videoendoscope Everest XLG3. The technology of optoelectronic 3D mapping of the examined surface, which consists in measuring the phase shift between the emitted and reflected light waves, is briefly described. The efficiency of the “PhaseProbe” based method of endoscope measurements is compared with the earlier developed methods, such as “ShadowProbe” and “LaserDots”, which were used by the author in real conditions of diagnostic investigations of engines in operation in marine power plants. The processed results of the endoscope analysis of the broken gas turbine engine rotor blades which were earlier dimensioned using the inspection probes of “StereoProbe”, “ShadowProbe” and “LaserDots” type and now are examined by the author with the aid of the phase shift method make a valuable complement and synthesis of the discussion presented in the article.

More and more intensive technology development makes it possible to produce modern hydraulically driven devices which secure high reliability of operation in various conditions. To design such devices, investigations are performed, including experimental tests, which are very expensive and time consuming. In the design process of a new hydraulically driven machine or system, designers frequently have to solve problems concerning its operation in different weather conditions, for instance in low ambient temperatures. Due to the complexity of the phenomena of concern, the serviceability of the designed hydraulic component or system in those conditions is most frequently assessed based on numerical calculations, much cheaper than the experiments. The article presents three methods: experimental, analytical, and that based on computer simulation, applied for assessing the serviceability of cold hydraulic components supplied with hot working medium being a source of a so-called thermal shock.

Contemporary engine tests are performed based on the theory of experiment. The available versions of programmes used for analysing experimental data make frequent use of the multiple regression model, which enables examining effects and interactions between input model parameters and a single output variable. The use of multi-equation models provides more freedom in analysing the measured results, as those models enable simultaneous analysis of effects and interactions between many output variables. They can also be used as a tool in preparing experimental material for other advanced diagnostic tools, such as the models making use of neural networks which, when properly prepared, enable also analysing measurement results recorded during dynamic processes. The article presents advantages of the use of the abovementioned analytical tools and a sample application of the neural model developed based on the results of examination carried out on the engine research rig.

The article provides proof that the diagnostics of marine internal combustion engines and other ship power plant machines should take into account the randomness and unpredictability of certain events, such as wear, damage, the variations of mechanical and thermal loads, etc., which take place during machine operation. In the article, the energy $ E $, like the other forms (methods) that it can be converted into (heat and work), is considered the random variable $ E_t $; at time $t$, this variable has the mean value $ \overline{E}_t $, which is the observed value of the statistic $ \overline{E}_{st} $ with an asymptotically normal distribution $ N ( E(E_t), \frac{ \sigma_t }{ \sqrt{n} } ) $, irrespective of the functional form of the random variable $E_t$. A proof is given that shows that the expected value estimated in the above way, considering the time t of the performance of task Z by a marine internal combustion engine or other ship power plant machine, can be used to determine the machine’s possible action (DM). When compared to the required action (DW) needed for task Z to be performed, this possible action makes it possible to formulate an operating diagnosis concerning whether the engine or machine of concern is able to perform task Z. It is assumed that an energy device of this type is able to perform a given task when the inequality DM≥DW holds. Otherwise, when DM < DW, the device cannot perform the task for which it was adopted in the design and manufacturing phase, which means that it is in the incapability state, although it still can be started and convert energy into the form of heat or work.

The application of Digital Twins is a promising solution for enhancing the efficiency of marine power plant operation, particularly their important components – marine internal combustion engines (ICE). This work presents the concept of applying a Performance Digital Twin for monitoring the technical condition and diagnosing malfunctions of marine ICE, along with its implementation on an experimental test-bench, based on a marine diesel-generator. The main principles of implementing this concept involve data transmission technologies, from the sensors installed on the engine to a server. The Digital Twin, also operating on the server, is used to automatically process the acquired experimental data, accumulate statistics, determine the current technical state of the engine, identify possible malfunctions, and make decisions regarding changes in operating programs. The core element of the Digital Twin is a mathematical model of the marine diesel engine’s operating cycle. In its development, significant attention was devoted to refining the fuel combustion model, as the combustion processes significantly impact both the engine’s fuel efficiency and the level of toxic emissions of exhaust gases. The enhanced model differs from the base model, by considering the variable value of the average droplets’ diameter during fuel injection. This influence on fuel vapourisation, combustion, and the formation of toxic components is substantial, as shown. Using the example of calibrating the model to the test results of a diesel engine under 27 operating modes, it is demonstrated that the application of the improved combustion model allows better adjustment of the Digital Twin to experimental data, thus achieving a more accurate correspondence to a real engine.

This paper presents a proposal of identification of a degree of hazard to ship shaft line due to impulse load caused by underwater explosion. A theoretical analysis was made of influence of changes in co-axiality of shafts on second-kind critical velocities resulting from elastic deformations of hull structure in vicinity of shaft bearing foundations. Results are presented of pilotage tests of underwater explosion performed on training water area. A preliminary mathematical model of underwater explosion is given with taking into account mass of explosives and distance from the tested object. The drawn conclusions show a way of identification of hazard to shaft line by using spectral analysis and time - runs of vibration signals recorded at shaft bearings.

Ze względu na losowość czynników wymuszających podczas użytkowania urządzeń okrętowych w praktyce eksploatacyjnej okrętowych układów energetycznych wdrażanych jest coraz więcej elementów strategii eksploatacji wg stanu technicznego (ang. Condition Based Maintenance). W referacie przedstawiono wybrane problemy dotyczące diagnostyki jako niezbędnego ogniwa w ciągu czynności związanych z podejmowaniem racjonalnych, podyktowanych aktualnym stanem technicznym, decyzji eksploatacyjnych. W tym aspekcie zwrócono uwagę na konieczność odpowiedniego zorganizowania badań diagnostycznych oraz sposobu gromadzenia ich wyników pod kątem zastosowania w przyjętym modelu decyzyjnym. Ilustracją przedstawionych rozważań jest zaproponowany model procesów: zmian stanu technicznego i eksploatacyjnego silnika okrętowego opracowany z wykorzystaniem teorii procesów semimarkowskich. Uzyskane na podstawie tych modeli wartości odpowiednich wskaźników mogą zostać użyte w procesie decyzyjnym np. podczas wzmiankowanym w referacie opracowaniu drzewa decyzyjnego.
