Opis:
A simplified cellular automaton was used to calculate the kinematics of non-cohesive granular materials during confined flow in silos. In this model, granular flow was assumed to be an upward propagation of holes through a lattice composed of cells representing single particles. Calculations were carried out with different silo shapes and inserts, transition probabilities, migration rules, outflow schemes, grid types, wall roughness and cell numbers. To visualize the calculation process, horizontal layers of various shades were introduced. The simulation results were compared with laboratory tests in model silos.

Opis:
An improved cellular automaton has been used to calculate the kinematics of non-cohesive granular materials during confined flow in mass and funnel flow model silos. In this model, based on a gas model of hydrodynamics, collisions and dissipation of particles were taken into account during granular flow. The model allowed for investigations of dilatant zones in granular material during silo flow.

Opis:
Paper presents the results of simulations of granular flow with a cellular automata model. Flow of granular material behind a moving retaining wall and in a silo with inserts was numerically analysed. Two different migration schemes during flow were assumed. Advantages and limits of the model were outlined.

Opis:
The problems of flow of a granular material is the processes of silo discharge and filling are considered. Dynamic, two-dimensional problems are analyzed, both the plane and axisymmetric ones. The material point method is applied as an analytical tool, a variant of the finite element method capable of solving pertinent equations of motion on an arbitrary computational element mesh and tracing state variables at material points chosen independently of the mesh. The mechanical behaviour of a granular material is described with non-associative elastic-perfectly plastic and elastic-viscoplastic material models with the Drucker-Prager yield condition. The influence of friction between the flowing granular body and silo walls is taken into account. The material point method enables one to analyze silos of arbitrary shapes, including silos with inserts controlling the flow of the stored material. The mass and funnel types of flows are analyzed.

Opis:
Discrete element methods for modelling granular flows have now developed sufficiently for them to be applied to complex industrial and mining applications with an expectation that they can predict these flows reasonably well. Furthermore detailed quantitative predictions can be made using these models, allowing them to be validated against carefully designed experiments and then iteratively improved. The models allow existing equipment and processes to be carefully analysed. The resulting enhanced understanding can then be used to help improve them or to create new ones. DEM modelling of a wide range of industrial applications are described in this paper, including ball mill operation, dragline bucket filling, vibrational segregation by size and density, flow in centrifugal mills, flows from slot hoppers, idler induced segregation, cutter bias for commodity samplers and mixing in tumblers.
