Opis:
The CFD code FLUENT, version 5.4, has been used for the flow analysis of two test pumps of end-suction volute type: one of low specific speed and one of medium specific speed. For both, head as a function of flow rate for constant rotational speed is known from experiments. FLUENT provides three calculation methods for analysis of turbomachinery flows: the multiple reference frame method (MRF), the mixing plane method (MP) and the sliding mesh method (SM). In all three methods, the flow in the rotor is calculated in a rotating reference frame, while the flow in the stator is calculated in an absolute reference frame. In the MRF and MP methods steady flow equations are solved, while in the SM method, unsteady flow equations are solved. The SM method does not introduce physical approximations. The steady methods approximate the unsteady interaction between rotor and stator. The cost of the unsteady method is, however, typically 30 to 50 times higher than the cost of the steady methods. It is found that the MRF and MP methods lead to completely erroneous flow field predictions for flows far away from the best efficiency point. This makes the steady methods useless for general performance prediction.

Opis:
The paper refers to a numerical analysis of the flow through a centrifugal pump working at high rotational speed. This kind of a pump is characterized by a high delivery head and a low discharge. The considered pump is a one-stage centrifugal pump with a rotational speed of 12 000 rpm. This pump has been manufactured and prepared for experimental research. The main purpose of the presented research has been to determine the flow characteristic of the pump by means of CFD methods. To this end the commercial CFD code, ANSYS CFX 11, has been used. The obtained numerical results have shown high usefulness of the CFD methods for the flow machinery design process. In the next step the obtained flow characteristic will be compared with the experimental investigations.

Opis:
A three-dimensional, steady, incompressible, turbulent flow field inside a multi-blade centrifugal fan used in an air-conditioner has been analyzed numerically. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the standard k-epsilon turbulence model have been discretized by the finite volume method. The calculation results have shown complex three-dimensional characteristics of the flow, especially in the blade passages near the shroud side. The results have revealed a boundary layer separating the flow from the leading edge on the blade suction surface, the flow's reversal from the high pressure region inside the volute to the low pressure region near the impeller inlet, the flow's recirculation near the shroud side, a jet-wake pattern at the rotor exit, pressure fluctuation on the blade surface, etc. Some of the numerical results agree well with previous experiment.

Opis:
It has long been known that the exit blade angle plays a very important role in the performance of a centrifugal pump handling water or viscous oil. The effect of exit blade angle on the performance and flow of centrifugal pumps is usually investigated experimentally. However, due to the high cost and limited data that can be obtained by experiment, currently there is a great need for this effect to be studied numerically by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). At present, extensive comparisons between experiment and simulation regarding the performance of viscous oil and flow in centrifugal pumps with different exit blade angles are not available. Hydraulic performance and flow details in the impeller and the volute of a centrifugal pump with an exit blade angle of 44o were investigated numerically with the CFD code Fluent, using water and viscous oil as the working fluid, respectively. The effect of exit blade angle was then elucidated by comparing the performance and flow with that of a pump with an exit blade angle of 20o. It was determined that the results for the performance and flow obtained by means of CFD were in qualitative agreement with the observations. The sudden-rising-head effect is dependent on roughness and viscosity. The unstable zone in the theoretical head curve of the impeller at a low flow rate was attributed to the strong reaction of the volute to the flow in the vicinity of the impeller exit. The flow in the impeller with a large exit blade angle was subject to separation near the blade pressure side, however, a large exit blade angle helped improve the pump performance of viscous oil.

Opis:
This paper investigates the three-dimensional viscous ow in centrifugal impellers through theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, which is a summary of the authors' recent work. A quantitative evaluation of the dierent contributions to the streamwise vorticity is performed, namely, the passage vortices along the endwalls due to the ow turning; a passage vortex generated by the Coriolis forces proportional to the local loading and mainly active in the radial parts of the impeller; blade surface vortices due to the meridional curvature. In the numerical simulation the NASA Large Scale Centrifugal Compressor (LSCC) impeller with vaneless diuser is computed at three ow rates. An advanced Navier-Stokes solver, EURANUS/TURBO is applied with an algebraic turbulence model of Badwin-Lomax and a linear k-" model for closure, for dierent meshes. An in-depth validation has been performed based on the measured data. An excellent agreement is obtained for most of the data over a wide region of the ow passage. Structures of the 3D ow in the blade passage and the tip region, and their variations with ow rate as well, are analysed based on the numerical results.

Opis:
The full cavitation model is increasingly applied in the cavitating flow simulation and the cavitation performance prediction of a centrifugal pump to improve or optimize its hydraulic design. Since the model involves surface tension and non-condensable gas content, it can be potentially applied in predicting cavitation behaviour of a centrifugal pump when handling viscous oils that possess different surface tension and gas content than water. However, the model has not been validated extensively against experimental incipient cavitation and NPSHr (net positive suction head required) data so far. In the paper, the cavitation performance of an experimental centrifugal pump is investigated using the CFD code and the full cavitation model when pumping water. The incipient cavitation number-flow rate curve and head-NPSHa (net positive suction head available) relationship are established and compared with experimental observations. The relationship between the head and integrated vapour-liquid volume ratio in the impeller is argued. The influence of the non-condensable gas content and turbulence model on the head-NPSHa curve is clarified. The cavity pattern predicted is compared with the visualized one. The computational methods adopted and the results achieved here can be useful for the cavitation performance prediction of a centrifugal pump in engineering.

Opis:
Discrete element methods for modelling granular flows have now developed sufficiently for them to be applied to complex industrial and mining applications with an expectation that they can predict these flows reasonably well. Furthermore detailed quantitative predictions can be made using these models, allowing them to be validated against carefully designed experiments and then iteratively improved. The models allow existing equipment and processes to be carefully analysed. The resulting enhanced understanding can then be used to help improve them or to create new ones. DEM modelling of a wide range of industrial applications are described in this paper, including ball mill operation, dragline bucket filling, vibrational segregation by size and density, flow in centrifugal mills, flows from slot hoppers, idler induced segregation, cutter bias for commodity samplers and mixing in tumblers.
