Opis:
This paper presents the numerical and experimental study of the flow structure in a radial cooling passage model of a gas turbine blade. The investigations focus on the flow aerodynamics in the channel, which is an accurate representation of the configuration used in aero engines. The flow structure and pressure drop were measured by classical measurement techniques. The stagnation pressure and velocity measurements in a channel outlet plane were performed. The investigations concerning the flow field and heat transfer used in the design of radial cooling passages are often developed from simplified models. It is important to note that real engine passages do not have perfect rectangular cross sections, but include corner fillets, ribs with fillet radii and special orientation. Therefore, this work provides detailed fluid flow data for a model of radial cooling geometry which possesses very realistic features. The main purpose of these investigations was to study different channel configurations and their influence on the flow structure and pressure losses in a radial cooling passage of a gas turbine blade.

Opis:
The dynamic behaviour of a rotor consisting of two tuned and mistuned bladed discs on a solid shaft is considered. The effect of the shaft's flexibility on the dynamic characteristics of the bladed discs and the coupling effects between the shaft and bladed disc modes are investigated. Results show clearly the coupling effects in a bladed disc-shaft system. Interference diagrams are developed, from which the dynamic behaviour of a bladed disc can be predicted for varying flexibility relationships between solid shafts and bladed discs. The global rotating mode shapes of flexible tuned and mistuned bladed disc-shaft assemblies are calculated. Rotational effects, such as centrifugal stiffening, are accounted for and all the possible couplings between the flexible parts are allowed. Calculated natural frequencies obtained from the blade, the bladed disc and the shaft with two discs are checked to discover resonance conditions and coupling effects. It is shown that blade mistuning strongly affects the interaction between flexible bladed discs and a flexible shaft. This interaction affects the flexible bladed disc modes and is not restricted to the modes with zero, one and two nodal diameters. The torsional frequency of the shaft with two bladed discs is coupled with the zero nodal diameter modes of the single bladed discs. It is shown that including the shaft in the bladed discs model is important from the designer's point of view and may alter the spectrum of frequencies considerably.

Opis:
Aerodynamic unsteady forces of rotor blades in a turbine stage with steam extraction were calculated and blade failure was reported. A numerical calculation of the 3D transonic flow of an ideal gas through turbomachinery blade rows moving one in relation to another is presented. An ideal gas flow through mutually moving stator and rotor blades with periodicity on the whole annulus is described with unsteady Euler conservation equations, integrated using the explicit monotonous finite-volume difference scheme of Godunov-Kolgan and a moving hybrid H-H grid. In order to find the pressure distribution of steam parameters behind the rotor blades, calculations were performed for a steady flow through the stage and the steam extraction channels using the SPARC program and the unsteady forces of the rotor blade were calculated for four steam extraction conditions. For the maximal steam extraction the 10th harmonic of the axial force and moment was found to be close to the first natural frequency of the bladed disc with one nodal diameter. Thus, steam extraction can be the cause of the blade's failure.

As a failure of rotor blades in a gas turbine was reported, the rotating-mode shapes of flexible shrouded bladed disc assemblies were calculated using a finite element approach. Rotational effects, such as centrifugal stiffening were accounted for, and all couplings between the flexible parts were allowed. The spin softening effects were neglected. A dynamic analysis of the shrouded bladed disc demonstrated that it was designed with a sufficient safety region of resonance. In case of one blade getting loose, it is vibrating in resonance.

The shape of HP gas and steam turbine stages, as well as of an LP exit stage of a steam turbine, is optimised numerically using a code Optimus and 3D RANS solver FLowER. The numerical method draws on direct constrained optimisation based on the method of deformed polyhedron. Values of the minimised objective function, that is stage losses with the exit energy are found from 3D viscous compressible computations. There are constraints imposed on the mass flow rate, exit swirl angle and reactions. Among the optimised parameters are stator and rotor blade numbers, stagger and twist angles, stator sweep and lean, both straight and compound. The optimisation gives new 3D designs with increased efficiencies.

A short overview of the main techniques for turbomachinery blade design based on CFD is followed by a more detailed description on an Optimisation- and Inverse Design method, developed at the von Karman Institute. The optimisation method uses an Artificial Neural Network to extract knowledge from a Database containing the results of previous designs and a Genetic Algorithm to define the optimum blade. The inverse design method makes use of the Euler or Navier-Stokes equations to predict how a given 3D blade shape should be modified to reach a prescribed pressure or Mach number distribution along the blade surface. Examples of transonic compressor and turbine blades, designed by both methods, illustrate the potential of these modern aero-design systems. Special attention is given to the problems related to existence and uniqueness and to those features that facilitate the practical use of these methods.

The article is focused on the examination of the unsteady performance of an HP turbine stage the blades of which were previously optimised for steady flow conditions. For the purpose of this examination, two pairs of initial and optimised stages of comparable output parameters were selected. The results have revealed that the modification of the blade profile in the optimisation process made the rotor blades more vulnerable to unsteady flow fluctuations, which eventually cancelled a considerable part of the stage efficiency gained from the steady flow optimisation.

Opis:
The development and application of a three-dimensional (3D) inverse methodology is presented for the design of turbomachinery blades. The design method is based on the specification of the blade loading distribution and the corresponding blade shape is systematically sought using directly the difference between the target and initial values. The design procedure comprises mainly of a CFD solver code and the blade-update algorithm to calculate the desired blade geometry as well as the corresponding 3D flow. The CFD code is a well-validated three-dimensional flow solver and has shock capturing ability to cope in both subsonic and high transonic-shocked, viscous flow. Fundamentally, it is a cell-vertex, finite volume, time-marching solver employing the multistage Runge-Kutta integrator in conjunction with accelerating techniques (local time stepping and grid sequencing). To account for viscosity, viscous forces are included in the solution using the log-law and mixing length models. The effects of rotating blades as well as tip clearance flow are also included in the flow prediction. The capabilities of the present method are demonstrated in the redesign of a transonic fan blade, the NASA Rotor 67. The redesign focuses on the shocked flow near the tip, where the effects of shock-boundary interaction and leakage flow are examined. The result shows conclusively that the shock-formation and its intensity in such a high-speed turbomachinery flow are well defined on the loading distributions. Simple guidelines to change the loading distribution can be followed using the proposed inverse methodology to improve the blade shape.

The paper is concerned with experimental aerodynamic research on the midsection of a 1220mm long turbine rotor blade. Optical as well as pneumatic measurements of the midsection blade cascade have been performed in a suction type high-speed wind tunnel. The results of measurements are analyzed and discussed. Interferograms and schlieren pictures taken in a wide range of isentropic exit Mach numbers and incidence angles exhibit the existence of several phenomena occurring in the transonic flow field at certain conditions concerning the exit Mach number and the angle of incidence. A flow separation taking place at an extreme negative incidence has been found to produce an additional loss of 6%. The presence of the reflection of an exit shock wave on the suction side of the neighbouring profile has been found to have a substantial influence on the losses, since the loss coefficient value has increased about 10% in cases without the reflection, i.e. the cases at a high exit Mach number and a high positive angle of incidence. Several reflection types have been observed and described.

A three-dimensional, steady, incompressible, turbulent flow field inside a multi-blade centrifugal fan used in an air-conditioner has been analyzed numerically. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the standard k-epsilon turbulence model have been discretized by the finite volume method. The calculation results have shown complex three-dimensional characteristics of the flow, especially in the blade passages near the shroud side. The results have revealed a boundary layer separating the flow from the leading edge on the blade suction surface, the flow's reversal from the high pressure region inside the volute to the low pressure region near the impeller inlet, the flow's recirculation near the shroud side, a jet-wake pattern at the rotor exit, pressure fluctuation on the blade surface, etc. Some of the numerical results agree well with previous experiment.

It has long been known that the exit blade angle plays a very important role in the performance of a centrifugal pump handling water or viscous oil. The effect of exit blade angle on the performance and flow of centrifugal pumps is usually investigated experimentally. However, due to the high cost and limited data that can be obtained by experiment, currently there is a great need for this effect to be studied numerically by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). At present, extensive comparisons between experiment and simulation regarding the performance of viscous oil and flow in centrifugal pumps with different exit blade angles are not available. Hydraulic performance and flow details in the impeller and the volute of a centrifugal pump with an exit blade angle of 44o were investigated numerically with the CFD code Fluent, using water and viscous oil as the working fluid, respectively. The effect of exit blade angle was then elucidated by comparing the performance and flow with that of a pump with an exit blade angle of 20o. It was determined that the results for the performance and flow obtained by means of CFD were in qualitative agreement with the observations. The sudden-rising-head effect is dependent on roughness and viscosity. The unstable zone in the theoretical head curve of the impeller at a low flow rate was attributed to the strong reaction of the volute to the flow in the vicinity of the impeller exit. The flow in the impeller with a large exit blade angle was subject to separation near the blade pressure side, however, a large exit blade angle helped improve the pump performance of viscous oil.

The main purpose of this work is to analyze the usefulness of the active cell model (ACM) developed by the author of this article to estimate the flow field around a single-bladedvertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) with the Darrieus-type rotor. The obtained flow velocity fields were compared with the experimental values taken from the literature available on the Internet. Additionally, the flow fields around the rotor and the aerodynamic forces were determined using the following approaches: the ke RNG turbulence model, the scale-adaptive simulation (SAS) and the laminar model. The velocity profiles behind the turbine rotor obtained with all numerical approaches are consistent with the experiment. The aerodynamic blade loads obtained using numerical methods also appear to be satisfactory.

The paper concerns the experimental investigations and numerical simulations of a high loaded model of a turbine blade. An increase in the blade load leads to enlargement of a local supersonic zone terminated by a shock wave on the suction side. The Mach number upstream of the shock reaches up to 1.6. The interaction of the shock wave with a boundary layer at such a high Mach number leads to a strong separation. Streamwise vortices generated by air-jets were used for the interaction control. The work presents the experimental and numerical results of the application of an air-jets vortex generator on the suction side of cooled turbine blades. Very interesting results were obtained in the context of the air cooling and air-jet vortex generator influence on the flow structure in the turbine passage.
