Nowadays, the transformations of metropolises into smart cities is a crucial factor in improving the living conditions of the inhabitants. The goal of the smart city concept is modern urban management using technical tools that offer state-of-the-art technologies, considering the applicable ecological standards while saving resources and achieving the expected results. The purpose of this article is to identify the areas of research analysed in the international literature in the field of smart cities. The bibliometric analysis was carried out to achieve the purpose. The analysis covered publications on smart cities published in Scopus and Web of Science databases from January 2009 to May 2019. Based on the bibliometric analysis, a bibliometric map was developed using the mapping technique VOS — the visualisation of similarities. Original clusters were created using the VOSviewer software. The bibliometric map visualises the results of the analysis that targeted the word coexistence.

Modern cities face many challenges related to globalisation, metropolisation and digitalisation. The smart city concept, which has been gaining popularity in recent years, is considered an answer to their needs. One of the paradigms of modern smart cities is the Internet of Things. This article aims to identify the main research directions and trends in the scientific literature in the field of Internet-of-Things-based smart cities. The author of the paper conducted a bibliometric analysis of publications from 2012–2021, collected from the Web of Science, Scopus and IEEE Xplore databases. The methodology includes: (i) the selection of databases and key words, (ii) defining search criteria, (iii) data export, creation of an aggregate database and record selection, and (iv) the analysis of the results and identification of the major research trends. The study involved 1019 publications. The last stage of the research process identified the leading countries, institutions, journals, and authors in terms of publication activity, as well as the most frequently occurring terms. The key word analysis allowed identifying five main research directions: IoT application domains in smart cities, IoT architecture for smart cities, energy, security and privacy and data. Within each area, the main research themes have been identified, and selected publications have been reviewed.

Intelligent transport systems (ITS) are undoubtedly an opportunity for the sustainable development of smart cities today. ITS is based on advanced transport technologies that help minimise the emission of harmful substances to the environment. Smart mobility and ITS are related to the use of ICT. The implementation of technologically advanced ITS is associated with several benefits, barriers and difficulties. However, transport, ITS and smart mobility (as a component of a smart city) are indicated as the most desirable option for sustainable urban transport systems. The article aims to identify barriers related to the implementation of ITS in cities from the point of view of people responsible for the organisation of urban transport representing the local government of selected voivodship cities in Poland. The goal formulated in this way allowed to identify the following research question: what are the problems and barriers of implementing ITS in the city from the local government’s perspective? To achieve the paper’s aim, the author based their analysis on a qualitative technique of collecting empirical data. Ten individual in-depth interviews were conducted with representatives of local governments (vice-mayors and members of urban transport organisers) in voivodship cities, which represented six Polish macro-regions. Research results and findings indicate the main categories and subcategories of barriers related to the ITS implementation. The identified barriers are grouped into the following categories: economic, social, organisational, technological and legal. The contribution is twofold: first, in the presentation of the theoretical and practical barriers to ITS in juxtaposition; and second, in identifying the intelligent transportation impact, which affects the provision of being a smarter city. The findings can positively influence as important factors for local governments to focus on intelligent transport.

This paper aims to perform comparative analysis of urban transport in selected global cities and to verify the existence of clusters. It was based on data source from the World Organization Data Urban. It used Indicators proposed in ISO 37120 Sustainable Community Development. The test procedure exploited taxonomic methods as Ward’s hierarchical analysis and the deagglomerating k-means analysis. The empirical analysis comprises four indicators: (I) high capacity public transport system, (II) light passenger public transport system, (III) annual number of public transport trips and (IV) number of personal automobiles. Main results are the classification of selected global cities, identification and characterization of trends in the field of urban transport in each group. The empirical analysis confirms a substantial diversity of urban transport in selected cities. These differences arise from their past, geographical location, size, different reactions to the transition process and the different economic structures. The taxonomic analysis of the urban transport in selected cities separated five independent classes typological. This elaboration aims to examine the role of urban transport in city management based on a literature review, databases and reports of the European Union.

The textile industry is one of the fastest growing industries which expressively contributes to the economic growth of Malaysia. However, in recent years, the situation has changed and demonstrates a downward trend. The imports are growing faster compared to the exports, consequently resulting in a low contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP). To address the issue, this study aims to investigate the role of Industry 4.0 on the performance of firms engaged in the production and services of the Malaysian textile industry. To achieve the objective, this study adopted a cross-sectional research design. A survey was carried out to collect data from employees of textile firms. Results of the study found that Industry 4.0 positively contributed to the effectiveness of the production and services of the textile industry. Production and services have a positive role in the performance of textile firms. The current study provides an interesting insight into the future direction of research for studies on organisational performance, which can be extended to different manufacturing-based industries. In addition, it provides the rationale for the adoption and implementation of smart technologies in these industries. It has been found that cyber-physical systems (CPS), interoperability, a smart city and a smart product have a positive effect on production and services. Additionally, it is not possible without the effective implementation of technology. Thus, the current study provides valuable insights into the improvement of the textile industry’s performance.

Tematem wystawy Expo 2015 zorganizowanej w Mediolanie było „Wyżywienie planety, energia dla życia”. Organizatorzy zaproponowali zerwanie z dotychczasową formułą wystawy. Położono nacisk na ekologię, która znalazła przełożenie w architekturze pawilonów wystawowych. Teren Expo to pełnoprawne miasteczko wykorzystujące inteligentne rozwiązania dla zintegrowanego zarządzania energią. Pawilony wystawowe wyposażono w rozwiązania wykorzystujące odnawialne źródła energii, a do ich budowy użyto materiałów przyjaznych dla środowiska. W niniejszym artykule podjęto tematykę inteligentnego zarządzania energią w kontekście wystawy Expo 2015. Omówiono kluczowe zagadnienia związane z oszczędzaniem i wytwarzaniem energii oraz jej zintegrowanym gospodarowaniem. Przedstawiono rozwiązania wykorzystujące odnawialne źródła energii oraz proekologiczne rozwiązania zastosowane w wybranych pawilonach wybudowanych na potrzeby wystawy.
The theme of Expo 2015 in Milan was „Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”. The event organizers proposed a break with the previous form of the exhibition. The emphasis was on ecology, which translated into the architecture of expo pavilions. The area of Expo was a proper town that uses smart solutions for integrated energy management. The pavilions were equipped with solutions using renewable energy sources and were built with the use of environment-friendly materials. The present article refers to the problem of smart energy management in the context of Expo 2015. It describes key issues related to energy producing and saving and its integrated management. Moreover, the paper presents solutions that use renewable energy sources as well as proecological solutions used in chosen pavilions built for the needs of the exposition.
