The operating conditions of light rail vehicles (trams, metro vehicles) are predominantly different compared with those of passenger or freight trains. The increased number of low-radii curves has a negative effect on wheel–rail interaction. The general design of light rail vehicle running gear is inherited from passenger trains and adapted to different loads. However, conventional solutions of a running gear may not provide smooth low-radius curve negotiation in all circumstances. In addition, a two-point contact is likely to occur, which, in turn, leads to accelerated wear of not only the wheels’ tread but also their flanges. One of the proposals to deal with problems associated with the wheel–rail interaction in tight curves is implementing an automotive solution: a differential gear. The aim of the study is to investigate the dynamic behavior of a metro vehicle model equipped with differentials at each wheelset. The differentials were tested in two main variants: open and with internal friction torque. Internal friction torque value was set, consecutively, up to 2000 Nm. The results have shown that on tight curves a differential may improve rail vehicle wheel–rail interaction.

Opis:
This work is focused on the possible ways of improving the running safety of a railway vehicle, which uses IRWs (independently rotating wheels) in a bogie. It discusses the main positive and negative properties of an application of IRWs for a railway vehicle while it is running in a curve. There are evaluated running properties of a railway vehicle in terms of safety for IRWs and a standard wheelset (SW). It is assumed that a wheelset design with IRWs will reduce the risk of derailment of a railway vehicle in a curve with a smaller radius because it will be reached a more favourable distribution of decisive forces in the wheel/rail contact. A designed wheelset with IRWs differs from other IRWs designs; in this case, only a flange can rotate independently from a wheel treat surface about the axis of rotation. Further, this research presents an analysis of a friction forces distribution of the friction forces in a contact of a flange and a rail head and a comparison with an SW. The obtained results allow concluding that it is advisable to use the wheels with the perspective wheel design (including independently rotating) to reduce the resistance to movement and improve the running properties of a railway vehicle for safety.

The main objective of this research is to examine the influencing parameters of driver performance through the yellow phase at urban signalized intersections with and without red-light running (RLR) cameras. Data were collected to include the intersection type, vehicle type, turning movement type, whether the vehicle position is in a platoon or not, presence of RLR cameras, green light flash devices, pedestrians, and pavement markings. A total of 2168 driver observations were extracted. Only 33.3% of the drivers stopped before the stop line, 59% of the drivers passed the intersection through the yellow phase, and 7% of the drivers committed RLR violations. The results showed that drivers were more likely to stop before the stop line through the yellow phase at locations with RLR cameras, green light flash devices, pavement markings, where pedestrians were present, and at a four-leg intersection. Chi-square tests indicated that all parameters had a significant impact on driver performance, except for the type of turning movement.

The faulty running gear of rail vehicles can be identified by the results of measurements of vertical forces caused by wheel running surface damages or other wrongness of bogie suspension. Several different automatic diagnostic systems are used in European railways (operating while the trains are in service) to detect damage to rail-wheel running surfaces. The principles of this trackside equipment operation and the reliability of their measurements may differ noticeably. This is especially true in different seasons of the year (winter/summer). Data collection and aggregation results should be checked in equivalency (comparability). The authors compared the efficiency of different automatic systems in detecting wheel failures according to wheel-rail loads in different seasons of the year and presented their results. The authors also compared the similarity of results of the different measurement systems.

An experimental investigation of mechanical idle running losses in an agriculture tractor transmission was used to collect a wide range of data. The influence of the engine rotation speed, the number of switched-on gears, and the oil level in the transmission gearbox on the idle running losses was determined. Adequate regression models in cases of switched-on and switched-off PTO were received. A genetic algorithm was used to optimize mathematical models obtained using regression analysis. A feedforward artificial neural network was also developed to estimate the same experimental data for mechanical idle running losses in transmission. A back-propagation algorithm was used when training and testing the network. A comparison of the correlation coefficient, reduced chi-square, mean bias error, and root mean square error between the experimental data and fit values of the obtained models was made. It was concluded that the neural network represented the mechanical idle running losses in tractor transmission more accurately than other models.

This study aimed to adjust the rail passenger car running gear parameters by adapting them to independently rotating wheels. The most important aspect was the safety of the passenger car running in terms of derailment; thus, the values of the Nadal criterion were calculated first. Another aspect to consider is passenger comfort based on the values of Sperling’s comfort index according to the rail passenger car speed. The modes of suspension behaviour during operation were considered in two typical conditions: on a straight track section and on a curve with a 200-m radius. Calculations were performed using Universal Mechanism software. The results are interpreted in the paper, and the final conclusions of this study are given.

This paper investigates the influence of longitudinal and lateral forces on the accuracy of measurements of vertical forces for three-piece bogies. Theoretical studies of the loading of the bogie side frame have been carried out using the finite element method under the action of forces from a wheelset. The places of installation of strain gauges and the method of processing the received signals are determined. A method has been developed for measuring the vertical and lateral forces, which makes it possible to increase the accuracy of measurements of the vertical force, with the help of which the safety of movement is assessed during running dynamic tests and to ensure the simultaneous measurement of vertical and lateral (frame) forces transmitted to the boogie side frame, which will allow to reduce the number of strain gauges for measuring the considered forces during tests.

Opis:
In contrast to traditional systems for monitoring fault of the running gear of the rolling stock, this paper proposes a technology of noise control at the onset of defects. The authors consider the possibility of creating an intelligent system that can perform noise diagnostics with the indication of the beginning of the latent period of the initiation of typical defects preceding faults. To this end, using the noise technology, sets of reference informative attributes are created in the training process. The reference sets, in turn, are used to determine the condition of the object at the beginning of the development of defects by comparing them with current noise estimates. It also allows controlling the dynamics of the development of defects.
