    Opis:
    This paper introduces a special issue of the Journal Transport Problems on group research projects developed within the RailNewcastle summer school organised and held in Newcastle upon Tyne, North East England. The participants (both educators and students) worked together in multinational and multidisciplinary groups to produce research projects. The topics of the group research projects were based around railway and logisticsrelated problems. As a result a collection of the best articles is produced for the purposes of this special issue.
    Ten wstęp wprowadza do specjalnego wydania czasopisma Problemy Transportu poświęconego projektom badawczym przygotowanym w ramach letniej szkoły RailNewcastle, która była zorganizowana i odbyła się w Newcastle upon Tyne, w północnowschodniej Anglii. Uczestnicy (zarówno nauczyciele, jak i studenci) pracowali razem w grupach międzynarodowych i interdyscyplinarnych w celu opracowania projektów badawczych. Tematy projektów badawczych grup są poświęcone problemom kolejnictwa i logistyki. To specjalne wydanie jest przygotowane na podstawie zebrania najlepszych artykułów.

    This paper is set within the framework of the RailNewcastle Summer School program 2014 run by Newcastle University. It attempts to explore the sustainability credentials of railways when compared with other transport modes connecting central London with central Paris, two of Europe’s largest metropolis. Specifically, the study compares the energy consumption and noise pollution of a railonly travel option with two other alternatives using a combination of public transport modes. The analysis includes defining the regulatory framework, sourcing and aggregating energy consumption from a number of references as well as creating noise maps for key nodes using validated tools available. The results suggest that the rail-only option has the best performance of the three options in terms of energy consumption while a bus-coach-metro combination seems to have lower noise levels than the rest. Assumptions due to lack of meaningful data made in the calculation of underground rail services are thought to have influence on the lower than expected performance of rails systems in terms of noise. The authors conclude that considering the combined outcomes of both assessments, the rail-only option is the preferred choice from a sustainability credentials perspective.
    Artykuł powstał w ramach szkoły letniej RailNewcastle prowadzonej przez Uniwersytet w Newcastle. W pracy poruszono problemy związane z zużyciem energii oraz hałasem emitowanym przez kolej w odniesieniu do innych środków transportu. Jako materiał badawczy wybrano trzy możliwości podróży między dwoma największymi metropoliami Europy - Londynem a Paryżem. Analiza zawiera regulacje prawne wytwarzania i zużywania energii, a także mapy wraz z pomiarem hałasu dla wybranych węzłów komunikacyjnych. Wyniki sugerują, że kolej jest najkorzystniejszą opcją pod względem zużycia energii, podczas gdy konfiguracja autobus – autokar –metro wydaje mniej hałasu niż pozostałe opcje.

    The paper discusses the North Sea – Mediterranean corridor, part of the Trans-European transport network. A brief discussion on the aspects of multimodality and the possible modes of transport involved in transporting inland freight is presented followed by an introduction to main IT systems that can be implemented to increase the efficiency of freight transport. Presented also is a description on the envisaged investments in freight corridors in Europe. An assessment of information flows is also offered. The study concludes that the concept of a freight corridor should be extended to a network in order for more global benefits to be experienced.
    Artykuł omawia część transeuropejskiej sieci transportowej jakim jest Korytarz Morze Północne - Morze Śródziemnomorskie. Jest to krótka dyskusja na temat aspektów multimodalności i możliwych środków transportu zaangażowanych w przewóz śródlądowy, a następnie wprowadzenie do głównych systemów informatycznych, które mogą być wdrożone w celu zwiększenia wydajności transportu towarowego. Artykuł przedstawia również informacje o planowanych inwestycjach w korytarzach transportu towarowego w Europie. Badanie potwierdza, że należy rozwijać koncepcję sieci korytarzy towarowych w celu doświadczenia większych korzyści.

    This article presents the concept of division and assigns the railway stops, which are part of the rapid agglomeration light (RAL) rail system within the Cracow Metropolitan Area (CMA), in relation to two criteria. We can see considerable variation in the functions of the railway stops, even if they are located in the same metropolitan area. In this article, a review of the policy and planning document concerning the RAL has been conducted.

    The faulty running gear of rail vehicles can be identified by the results of measurements of vertical forces caused by wheel running surface damages or other wrongness of bogie suspension. Several different automatic diagnostic systems are used in European railways (operating while the trains are in service) to detect damage to rail-wheel running surfaces. The principles of this trackside equipment operation and the reliability of their measurements may differ noticeably. This is especially true in different seasons of the year (winter/summer). Data collection and aggregation results should be checked in equivalency (comparability). The authors compared the efficiency of different automatic systems in detecting wheel failures according to wheel-rail loads in different seasons of the year and presented their results. The authors also compared the similarity of results of the different measurement systems.
