This paper presents results of the statistical analysis of the operating parameters of a vehicle population, which was operated by the Poczta Polska (Polish Mail) delivery office in Lublin. The calculations was based on data from service in the years 2008–2010.

Opis:
Today, technology has transformed humans’ lives in all areas. Technology can be found in everyday life in the form of smart factories, smart cities and smart rooms. Thus, smart systems and devices are having a great effect upon human activities. Together with improving technology, in the last 50 years, the human population has seen an expeditious and substantial increase. The number of cars has also substantially increased and, as a result, parking spaces and car park have become more important. Areas in which to park cars have become wider in scope, including inside huge buildings; thus, the management of them become more difficult and complicated. Being able to discover an empty parking space as soon as it is needed is vital for both driver and multilevel parking garage owner, especially for the former, in order to avoid losing him/her time and money in a crowded city. Thus, we designed a smart car parking system, which is managed by Arduino control. Our main aim includes reducing time loss and the amount of fuel consumed while trying to find a parking space. By reducing the amount of consumed fuel, it will be possible to reduce air pollution levels, together with minimizing the negative impact on domestic finances caused by car usage.

Among different transportation modes, inland water transport is recognized as a low-cost, environmentally friendly way of transporting. The use of this mode in Myanmar encounters many challenges and the chance of promoting this mode of transport comparing to other transport mode like road transport should be explored. Thus the competitiveness of the two modes are investigated from the operators’ cost perspective. The time taken in each mode is also explored. The considerations are taken into account for the recommendations to improve transport performance in terms of time, cost, and reliability especially for inland water transport. Then it attempts to identify the potential and the challenges of respective modes.
Низкая стоимость и экологичность выделяет внутренний водный транспорт среди других видов и способов транспортировки. Использование этого вида транспорта в Мьянме сталкивается с большим количеством трудностей, и возможности его развития по сравнению с другими видами транспорта, такими как дорожный, должны быть исследованы. В данной статье конкурентоспособность этих двух видов транспорта рассмотрена с точки зрения операционных расходов. Исследованы также и затраты времени в каждом случае. С учетом различных факторов предоставлены рекомендации для увеличения производительности, внутреннего водного транспорта в особенности, с точки зрения времени, стоимости и надежности. Кроме того, в статье рассмотрены потенциал и сложности развития обоих видов транспорта.

Purpose: The aim of the study is to determine changes in the cost efficiency of the administration of public higher education in Poland. Design/methodology/approach: The biennial cost Malmquist productivity index was used to study changes in cost efficiency of 58 public higher education institutions in 2014-2016. The results were presented for 6 groups of universities, according to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in Poland classification. Findings: The research shows that out of 6 groups of institutions accepted for the study, 2 achieved an increase and 1 a decrease in the Malmquist cost index in both study periods. Changes in the Malmquist cost index in the analyzed period are small as the index ranged from 0.98 to 1.06. Both component overall efficiency change and cost-technical change contributed to the change in the Malmquist index level. Research limitations/implications: The main limitation of the study are the analysis of changes in cost efficiency only. Additionally, only public universities supervised by the ministry responsible for higher education were studied. Future research should include changes in allocative efficiency using the Malmquist index. In addition, a larger research sample should be considered, taking into account other public universities, including medical, arts, etc., and non-public universities. Practical implications: The considerations presented are relevant to public university authorities. The article indicates the need to assess cost effectiveness in evaluating the functioning of a higher education institution. This belongs to the responsibilities of management control in terms of effectiveness and efficiency of HEIs and spending of public funds. Information on the variation of cost efficiency between HEIs, assigned to 6 groups, may become a stimulus to conduct an assessment of this economic category in a given unit and strive to improve it. Originality/value: The added value of the article is the use for the first time of the cost Malmquist index to examine higher education. Also, the use of a modified version of the cost Malmquist index to estimate efficiency assuming variable returns-to-scale.

Purpose: The purpose of the article is to review two important issues within management and quality sciences, namely capital management and risk management. Design/methodology/approach: Due to the cognitive nature of the article, the aim of the work will be achieved using the method of analyzing the literature on the subject. Literature studies include Polish and foreign publications. Findings: The conducted literature analysis has shown that sources dealing with capital management issues and the cost of capital treat the problem of risk very casually. Similarly, in publications referring to the issue of risk, it rarely refers to capital and its cost. This paper indicates the need for a comprehensive approach to these two issues, indicating the close relationship between them that occurs in the field of management and quality sciences. Research limitations/implications: The research presented in the article is theoretical and may contribute to further empirical research. Practical implications: The practical implications of the conducted research are associated with the possibility of their application for the needs of management decisions in enterprises. Originality/value: A review of the literature on the subject shows that the issues of capital management and risk management are often treated separately and undertaken as independent research areas. This article indicates the need for a comprehensive approach to capital management and risk management and their consideration. The author proves that management decisions regarding raising capital result in a specific cost of capital. This in turn largely depends on the level of risk associated with investing in the enterprise.

Purpose: The article presents the actual problem of determining cost of construction project implementation. Within the conducted research, an analysis of existing approaches to managing project costs in the face of uncertainty was carried out, including the justification of the possibility of using the contract system for the purpose of optimizing the project, as well as identification of possibilities of cost engineering. Design/methodology/approach: A Case-study method, based on an assessment of the performance indicators of an investment project for the construction of a city boiler house and the project cost analysis using the Earned Value Technique, was used to prove the hypothesis about the effectiveness of using cost engineering. Findings: The results of evaluating the effectiveness of project implementation was substantiated, and the feasibility of applying the EPC contract for the cost optimization was proven. The projects implemented with the EPC contracts have a high potential. EPC/M contracts are widely used in other countries, but in Russia, this type of contract is just beginning to be used. Originality/value: In the result of the analysis, it was revealed that the main factors affecting the cost of the boiler house implementation construction project were the imperfection of the pricing system, the presence of unrecorded work and costs, the inadequacy of the rationing system; the violation of technology and timing of implementation.

Koszt kapitału to interdyscyplinarne pojęcie, pojawiające się na gruncie różnych dziedzin i dyscyplin naukowych. Przenosząc tę koncepcję kosztu kapitału na grunt przedsiębiorstw górniczych, sformułowano cel niniejszego artykułu. Uczyniono nim wskazanie związku podejmowanego zagadnienia ze specjalnością ekonomika i organizacja górnictwa, w dyscyplinie górnictwo i geologia inżynierska, w dziedzinie nauk technicznych oraz analizę wspólnych obszarów badawczych, dotyczących kapitału i jego kosztu, pomiędzy różnymi dyscyplinami i specjalnościami naukowymi.
The cost of capital is an interdisciplinary term, appearing on the grounds of various scientific disciplines and areas. From the point of view of economics and organization of the enterprise, one of its most important definitions is perceiving it through the prism of the cost of capital engaged in the financing of the enterprise operations. Transferring this concept of the cost of capital to the grounds of mining enterprises, the objective of this paper has been set. It has been chosen to find the relation of the issue raised with the specialty of mining organization and economics, in the discipline of mining and engineering geology, in the area of technical sciences as well as to analyze the common research areas concerning the capital and its cost, between the various scientific disciplines and specialties.

Druga część artykułu dotyczy społecznego spojrzenia na efektywność i uwzględnia koncepcję społecznej odpowiedzialności biznesu jako sposobu nakłonienia przedsiębiorstw do działań prospołecznych. W ostatniej części przedstawiono możliwości szacowania efektywności na podstawie mierników produktywności zasobów i wskaźników finansowych.
The article is of theoretical character and concerns an analysis of the definition of effectiveness and the ways of its measurement. In the first part of the article, effectiveness is considered in an economic depiction, with inclusion of the basic definitions connected with it and of perspectives of its examination. The second part of the article is related to an outlook on effectiveness and involves a concept of corporate social responsibility as a way of inducing companies to pro-social actions. In the last part of the article there are possibilities presented concerning the estimation of effectiveness based on productivity measures of resources and financial indicators.

In general, it can be presented that winter road maintenance costs are rising due to increasing mobility, rising of salaries, and technological needs. For this reason, it is necessary to bring innovations into these processes. The greatest space is in the area of weather forecasting, which is a trigger for maintenance activities in the form of reducing black ice or snow removal. Road administrators use predictive services as a standard to obtain critical atmospheric temperature and weather data in advance. From the point of view of transport safety, the need to obtain predictive temperature data on the road surface is also important. These must also be obtained largely by knowing the temperature trends inside the road structure. The article presents the direction of our own research activities, whereas it focuses on the philosophy of research, justification of the idea, the introduction of research procedures, and the presentation of partial results.

Głównym celem artykułu jest przedstawienie wykorzystania autorskiej koncepcji zarządzania kosztami w cyklu życia wyrobiska wybierkowego, jako czynnika umożliwiającego wzrost konkurencyjności przedsiębiorstw górniczych. W teoretycznej części artykułu zawarto rozważania dotyczące istoty i źródeł konkurencyjności przedsiębiorstw. Następnie, odwołując się do wyników badań przeprowadzonych w 15 kopalniach węgla kamiennego w latach 2005-2012, zidentyfikowano kluczowe przesłanki opracowania koncepcji zarządzania kosztami w cyklu życia wyrobiska wybierkowego. W ostatniej części artykułu scharakteryzowano koncepcję zarządzania kosztami w cyklu życia wyrobiska wybierkowego, podkreślając jej znaczenie we wzmocnieniu konkurencyjności przedsiębiorstw górniczych.
The main aim of this article is to present the use of the authors’ approach to cost managing in the life-cycle of a longwall as a determinant of increase of competitiveness in mining enterprises. The theoretical part of the paper contains reflections on the nature and sources of competitiveness. Then, referring to the results of research carried out in 15 coal mines in 2005-2012, the key evidences of development the new cost management conception in the lifecycle of a longwall are presented. In the last part of the article the conception of cost management in the life cycle of a longwall is characterized with emphasizing its importance in strengthening the competitiveness of mining enterprises.

The publication presents the characteristics of Polish spa enterprises through the prism of economic results underlying the selection of companies for privatization, and those that remain under full state control. Work also recognizes problem of reducing the size of the medicinal potential of spas in the context of the privatization process of health resort companies.

W artykule przedstawiono jedną z metod szacowania kosztów projektowanego elementu, tzw. skorygowany koszt wariantowy. Metoda ta korzysta z zaprojektowanego modelu określania kosztów produkcji elementów maszyn wg rachunku kosztów działań, uwzględniającego różne zbiory czynników kosztotwórczych. Celem badań jest przedstawienie, w jaki sposób opis cech konstrukcyjnych, wytwarzania i organizacyjnych projektowanych elementów wraz z kalkulacją kosztów wg rachunku kosztów działań pozwala skorygować zbiory wartości czynników kosztotwórczych i decyduje o dokładności wyników w szacowaniu kosztów ich produkcji.
This paper presents one of the methods cost estimation of a designed element called corrected variant cost. The method uses a designed model of production costs determination for machine elements according to activity based costing accommodating different sets of cost drivers. The aim of the research is to present how the description of constructional, technological and organizational features of the designed elements together with cost calculation according to activity based costing allows to correct cost drivers and determines the accuracy of the results in estimating the cost of their production.

Opis:
Purpose: The attitudes of young Poles towards smart products and their relationship with the costs of energy supplying smart products are the main research objects in this paper. The smart products market is developing very dynamically, including both simple everyday utility products and durable goods with a significant unit value. The authors point out the existence of a cognitive gap regarding the connection between attitudes towards smart products and attitudes towards using electricity. The authors emphasize that the use of smart products requires universal access to the possibility of topping up these products. Design/Methodology/Approach: The research was conducted on a group of young Poles in 2021 as online questionnaire. The study aims to diagnose the attitudes of young Poles towards the location of power sources for smart products and the formalization of access to this power (determining the payer), which will allow in the future to conduct educational activities in the field of optimizing the use of natural resources (energy) as well as marketing activities of smart product suppliers. Findings: The results indicate disproportions in the knowledge and attitudes of young Poles towards costs of energy supplying smart products. Research hypotheses were positively verified. Young consumers do not see energy for smart products as “something” that has a price and must be paid for (access to it). Practical Implications: The conducted research shows that young buyers are not conscious energy buyers and are not aware of the costs of purchasing energy. Moreover, according to the respondents, both now and in the future, access to electricity (sources of energy) that allow powering smart products should be free and universal. Electricity is a product that has a price, and most likely the cost of energy will increase. Hence, it is important to conduct campaigns to make young consumers aware of the cost of energy and the relationship between the use of smart products and energy costs. Originality/Value: The presented results refer to pilot study in Poland. According to the authors, they have a high level of originality, as there are no previous studies in this area known. In turn, the social and economic problems related to the amount of energy consumed and its costs is a civilization challenge across the world.
