Opis:
The growth of peri-urban areas is increasingly recognised as one of the dominant land use planning problems, with significance in the area of transport planning. This has necessitated the studying of travel behaviour in peri-urban areas in cities around the world. This study particularly examined the travel behaviour of households in the peri-urban areas of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. It used both primary and secondary data. The primary data were obtained through a field survey from the administration of questionnaires on household heads in the study area using a multi-stage sampling technique. Findings revealed that 21.5% of the variability in the travel behaviour among the respondents could be attributed to socioeconomic characteristics such as age, household size, and length of stay, the number of cars owned and monthly income of households. It is recommended that the socioeconomic characteristics of residents in peri-urban areas should be considered when making transport policies in the State.

Car traffic in cities causes a decrease in travel speed, irregularity of public transport operation and, as a consequence for travellers, significant time losses. Because of congestion the accessibility to the destination points, especially those that are located in the city centre, is threatened. Other difficulties concern: road safety, increasing air pollution, traffic noise and global warming. Construction of new roads and transport facilities requires large financial resources and covers large areas. City authorities implement many solutions to reduce these negative effects of car transport, including strategies which aim towards change in travel patterns. Inhabitants are encouraged to travel by more sustainable transport modes, including bikes. The concept is called travel demand management and in Poland is still a new approach to the passenger transport. This paper presents examples of instruments that are most commonly used abroad to encourage bike travels and an overview of the activities carried out to promote bike usage in Cracow. The paper also identifies Best Practices implemented in the area of Cracow and significant deficiencies in the basic issues and actions necessary to be undertaken in the future.
24 K. Opis:
The concept of influencing changes in transport behavior towards sustainable mobility, which is gaining popularity in the 21st century, is free public transport (FFPT). It is estimated that the number of cities in which attempts were made to introduce FFPT exceeds 100. Most of them are located in Europe, especially in France and Poland. FFPT has mostly been restricted to specific city areas or market segments in the hope of increasing demand for public transport services. Because of this, a number of publications on free fare results refer to specific cases in cities. The main aim of this article is to examine the impact of free fares on the behavior and transport preferences of pupils in Gdynia, Poland. On the basis of the study of preferences and transport behavior of the inhabitants of Gdynia, carried out earlier by the team in 2010, 2012, 2015, and 2018, a preliminary description of the behavior and transport preferences of students was prepared. The research of the pupils was conducted twice: before and after the introduction of free travel entitlements. The results of the research carried out, and the data analysis, confirmed that FFPT had no impact on demand for public transport services or the travel behavior of pupils. According to the authors, the lack of positive effects of FFPT on travel behavior in the segment of students, or even more broadly, for achieving the purposes of sustainable mobility, results from the interaction of the following factors: specificity of students' travel behavior determined by the schedule of school activities, pupils' positive attitude to cars as urban transport means, not covering all means of public transport services of FFPT in Gdynia (the city rail is not covered by FFPT), short period of time since FFPT has been introduced. The results of the presented studies could not be verified due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors emphasize that before introducing FFPT, politicians should rely on the analysis of anticipated changes in the behavior of residents and the impact of FFPT on the economy of public transport, sustainable mobility goals and political and social results. This article complements the current knowledge on the results related to the introduction of FFPT for a selected group of residents.

For transport planning and policy-making, visualising the relationship among attributes; gender, education, occupation, age with travel pattern and mode choice is important. Household Interview Survey (HIS) is one of the major inputs in transport study which contains information about travel and demographic characteristics. From the analysis of 28,235 households in Dhaka city, this study represents the social demographic characteristic of Dhaka city based on the household survey. It was found that 89.79% of dwellers make double trips in a day and the trip rate per trip maker is 2.16, where 14% of total trips are generated at morning peak time between 7 to 8 am. The bus is the most preferable mode share and its contribution is about 35%. The scenario changed in a multimodal trip case and walking was the domination mode share with about 45% of total trips. Vehicle ownership had a vital rule in particular mode choice, especially in car and motorcycle household ownership case. Significant impact on travel patterns and mode choice criteria was found with gender, education, occupation, age, household income, trip purpose and time and vehicle ownership, which can help to formulate the strategic plan to solve the transport-related problem in Dhaka.

Consideration was given to the problem of making decisions on public transport management. Three parties making decisions were marked out: passenger flow, transport operator and municipal authorities. Passengers choose between public and private transport evaluating the value of time. The value of time is modeled by uniform distribution. The transport operator seeks to maximize the profit by varying the public transport frequency. The decrease in the frequency decreases the passenger flow of the public transport and cost of transportation. It’s important for the municipal authorities to determine the frequency minimizing the time loss of the population and cost of transportation. The existence of the decision concerning the problems of management was proven. The numerical example characterizing the influence of the parameters on the problem solution was given.

Urban sprawl is considered as a western urban development pattern, which is common in different cities around the world. Although, a large number of studies have focused on urban sprawl, modelling urban sprawl has been less emphasised, especially in various geographical contexts. This study aims to investigate urban sprawl and its determinants in a post-socialist country and model urban sprawl based on disaggregated data. In addition, the correlations of urban sprawl with travel patterns were examined, along with the socioeconomic characteristics of university students in Cracow, Poland by applying the Weighted Least Square (WLS) regression model. The WLS regression model was fitted based on the data from 1,288 online questionnaires targeting university students. Furthermore, urban sprawl around the home and the university for each student who indicated the nearest intersection to their home and university were separately estimated by employing the Shannon entropy. Based on the findings, urban sprawl around homes was correlated with 14 transport patterns and socioeconomic features such as gender, age, driving license, financial dependency status, gross monthly income, number of commute trips, mode of transportation for commuting, number of trips for shopping or entertainment, daily shopping area, mode choice for shopping and entertainment trips inside and outside the neighbourhoods, frequency of public transport use, the attractiveness of shops inside the neighbourhoods, and the length of time living in the current home. Additionally, urban sprawl around the university was significantly correlated with age, car ownership, number of commute trips, and a sense of belonging to neighbourhoods, entertainment place, and residential location choice. Finally, a positive correlation was reported between urban sprawl with higher income, elderly student, financial dependent students, and car dependency trips, while urban sprawl was negatively related to the use of public transit.

Opis:
Identification of the variables that influence a commuter’s decision to make or embark on a trip is perhaps one of the strategic guides for initiating or adopting any transportation policy in cities. This study aims to examine the influencing factors that determine intra-urban travel in the sub-Saharan city of Enugu, Nigeria. A qualitative esearch method is adopted, and from the city's various residential areas, three research clusters were identified and selected for investigation. A survey was conducted within the six selected neighbourhoods, which include Abakpa, Gariki and Ogbete neighbourhoods (high residential density areas); New Haven & Uwani neighbourhoods (medium residential density areas); and Trans-Ekulu (low residential density area). This was arrived at using a simple random and stratified sampling technique. The data collection instrument was a structured questionnaire distributed to 400 respondents based on the Yamane model. It was discovered that apart from socioeconomic determinants that influence the travel behaviour of commuters in the study area, other factors are related to public-transit service attributes. The results of the study also indicated that there is a statistically significant relationship between the various residential areas in Enugu metropolis and the residents’ perception of the factors influencing intra-city mobility (i.e. R = .488 and P = .006 at 0.05 significance level). It is concluded and recommended that urban transportation policies, which emphasize accessibility with policies related to landue planning and the decentralization of activity within the metropolis, need to be implemented. Other modes of non-motorized transportation should be reintroduced to address the determinants of intra-city mobility such as affordable prices of transport, safety of passengers on board, environmental pollution, traffic congestion and time wastage.

Nowadays cities are affected by the increasing number of cars. Car traffic leads to considerable problems related with congestion, parking, accidents as well as environmental pollution. Thus a very important issue is change of people’s mobility, behaviours towards more sustainable transport modes: public transport, bikes, walking trips or shared car usage – carpooling and carsharing systems. We can shape the travellers’ attitudes and behaviours using the mobility management concept. Mobility management is an approach to the passenger transport, oriented on promotion of sustainable mobility means and on management of demand for car usage. The paper presents the mobility management concept as well as gives examples of instruments applied in UE, North America, but also in Polish conditions, especially in Krakow.

Transport has a great impact on human activities but contributes to many negative phenomena occurring in road traffic, for example, road traffic accidents, emission of toxic exhaust fumes into the atmosphere and a high share of cars in road traffic. For the above reasons, many initiatives have been taken in the field of road traffic management and urban logistics. Based on a literature review, it was found that the problem of the phenomenon of traffic congestion in urban areas remains an ongoing issue. In the first part of this article, the theoretical issues of traffic flow and congestion formation in the city road networks were presented. While the second part outlines the situation of transport congestion in 10 Polish cities based on the worldwide TomTom Traffic Index in the years 2008-2018. This study is a brief analysis of the trends relating to transport congestion based on the TomTom Traffic Index in these cities.

Unexpected delay on freeways is the prime cause of dissatisfaction in road users. Increasing traffic, adverse environmental conditions, accidents, time, season, location and many more factors influence travel time and cause delay. There is no direct method to estimate delay. It is calculated from trip time estimates. Thus, it is a very big challenge for transportation professionals to develop a model that accurately estimates the trip time for a trip at a particular time, by a specific mode of transport. Subsequently, the reliability of the delay calculated from those trip time estimates is often doubtful. Further, the measurement of delay using the trip time data is another big thing. This paper is a step toward measuring the delay in an accurate way using travel time reliability measures. The study was conducted on the two modes of public transportation (City bus and Auto) in an urban corridor of length 16.3 km, in Hyderabad city, India. In this study, a license plate survey was conducted for data collection, travel time-based statistical analysis was employed for estimation of trip time and by making use of travel time measures, the delay was measured. The approach was validated graphically to portray its accuracy.

Sustainable mobility is a priority for transport systems in urban areas. Contemporary planning of transport systems assumes an increase in the role of public transport in everyday trips. To increase the share of trips using public transport, it is essential to improve the accessibility of public transport stops. The accessibility of such stops depends primarily on the distance between the trip origin and the stop. Many factors influence the distance that passengers are willing to travel. This paper discusses the relationship between the access time to the bus stop and travel time. To study such a relationship, various statistical methods may be applied. This paper presents the results of the analysis performed based on the data on trips made by inhabitants of Bielsko-Biała, gathered during the building of its transport model.

The circumstances of passengers’ decisions and behaviours concerning non-commute urban travels in Eastern Europe is not well-studied; most of the studies on this topic was done on Western societies. This paper presents the results of a study on Cracow, Poland. This study is based on a survey in two neighbourhoods of different urban forms in Cracow, one with central structure with compact land use and the other a representative of socialist urban form with big residential blocks and no central local places. The survey was carried out from January to February 2019 with 426 inhabitants. The results of the Ordinary Least Square models reveal that age, daily activity, the place of shopping, frequency of shopping in the vicinity of homes, and frequency shopping activities outside in farther places are significantly correlated with the frequency of non-work trips in Cracow. The sprawled decentral district produces a high correlation between shopping trips outside the district and the overall nonwork trip frequency, referring to the failure of the socialist urban form to keep non-work trips inside the districts by the presence of local facilities like shops and retail. It is discussed in this paper that such correlations may be very much context-specific, as there are some differences between the findings of this paper and those of international findings in high-income and developing countries.
