Purpose: The purpose of the article is to create a tool for monitoring the growth and development factors of SMEs in the educational services industry. Design/methodology/approach: To achieve the goal of the paper, key factors were identified, and then the Leppard questionnaire was adapted. A tool was created, which consists of questions related to the use of key growth and development factors. Findings: The questionnaire has 29 questions divided into 9 groups. The respondent's task is to determine on the Likert scale 1-5 (1 - means definitely disagree, and 5 - strongly agree) the level of truth of the statement with regard to the organisation that the respondent owns or manages. Research limitations/implications: The most severe disadvantage of the proposed tool seems to be its subjective nature. To reduce subjectivity, the Delphi method may be useful. Practical implications: The proposed tool can be an essential source of knowledge for entrepreneurs. Thanks to this, they can focus on the most important aspects of the development of their enterprises and will be able to increase the competitiveness of their business. Originality/value: This paper reveals the potential uses of a new tool for monitoring the growth and development of SME.

Introduction/background: The development of the small and medium enterprises sector is extremely important for economy from the point of view of many, very diverse criteria. Employment increase, market expansion, active involvement in internationalization processes and product portfolio expansion require many qualitative changes such as improvement of the management system, implementation of innovations, raising funds for investments, overcoming paradoxes and management shortcomings. Politics and public support instruments play an increasingly active role in those processes. Such public aid may include, for example, dedicated EU funds, support for business environment institutions as well as direct and indirect public influence exerted from the central, regional and district level. Aim of the paper: The purpose of this paper is to present an outline of the approach to contemporary entrepreneurship of small companies and the related development requirements which SMEs sector entities need to face as well as to draw out the research approach adopted by the author for evaluation of the public aid provided to entrepreneurs. Materials and methods: The research instruments have been independently developed by this paper’s author. They are the effect of pilot surveys held by the author with small and medium entrepreneurs and representatives of entrepreneurs’ self-government in which they indicated their feelings about and reflections on the opportunities for obtaining public support. The author has based his work also on the evaluation reports on the use of EU Structural Funds in the years 2007-2014. Results and conclusions: The system of research proposed by the author of the paper creates a space for becoming familiar with how entrepreneurs and administrators of aid funds evaluate potential changes which may result in corrections, as part of public support after 2020, that is during the period of the new perspective of financing with EU funds and during the greatest economic crisis after World War II caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Opis:
Nowadays, the role of employees, especially those who have contact with clients of an enterprise, is becoming crucial for determining the opportunities for putting into effect, innovative business solutions. The challenge behind the described issue is also for the enterprise to react efficiently to unusual situations. This paper answers the question whether there are significant differences in the way employees are used as experts in unusual situations depending on how long the enterprise has been conducted its business activity. A survey in the Mix Mode Survey Design formula was conducted for this purpose. Altogether there were 260 respondents representing small and medium-sized service enterprises from the territory of Poland who participated in the research. The obtained scientific results indicate that among the surveyed respondents, there are opinions that answer the posed research question in a positive manner.

Artykuł dotyczy funkcjonowania sektora mikro, małych i średnich przedsiębiorstw, w szczególności zakładów rzemieślniczych. Autorka skupia się na wybranym wycinku funkcjonowania przedsiębiorstw sektora MŚP – zakładach rzemieślniczych, a konkretnie na wykorzystaniu Krajowego Funduszu Szkoleniowego do podnoszenia kompetencji pracowników i właścicieli tych zakładów. Rozważania teoretyczne uzupełniono o wyniki badań empirycznych, w których prezentuje się opinie respondentów dotyczące deklarowanej chęci wykorzystania Krajowego Funduszu Szkoleniowego.
The article concerns the functioning of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, in particular craft enterprises. The author focuses on the selected section of the functioning of the SME sector – craft enterprises, and specifically the use of the National Training Fund to raise the competence of employees and owners of these establishments. Theoretical considerations supplemented by the results of empirical research, which presents the opinions of the respondents on the declared willingness to use the National Training Fund.

Introduction/background: The popularity of outsourcing as a management tool among Polish enterprises is increasing. Growing competition forces companies to look for new solutions for company management. Outsourcing is defined as a management tool to reduce costs in an enterprise. Aim of the paper: The aim of the study was to check whether there is a relationship between outsourcing and the size of the company. In the study, I list large companies and SMEs. Compares the relationships between the manufacturing and services sectors. Materials and methods: In this category, data from 250 companies from the Notoria database were used. In the first part of article, it compares the value of outsourcing across sectors using the Student T-test. In the next part of article, I examine the relationship between outsourcing and the size of companies. I compare the results between the vectors. Pearson's correlation test was used. It then compares the use of outsourcing between small and large companies. The student's T-test for independent programs was used. Results and conclusions: The results say there are differences in the use of outsourcing between the manufacturing and service sectors. I noticed that industrial companies use much more solutions provided by external suppliers. Moreover, I can see that outsourcing has a greater impact in manufacturing than in the service industry. As the company grows, the use of outsourcing increases. It also shows that large companies use outsourcing to a greater extent than smaller companies.

Purpose: The main objective of the paper is to determine the way SMEs perceive the circular economy concept and to establish factors influencing introduction of CE pratices. In particular, answers to the following research questions are sought: (1) Is the CE concept familiar to and well-understood by entrepreneurs?; (2) What are the strongest challenges and barriers for SMEs with regard to the introduction of the CE?; (3) Which factors determine SMEs’ introduction CE practices. Design/methodology/approach: SMEs were selected as the subject of the research. The study was quantitative in character. A questionnaire study and statistical analysis (structural equation modeling in it) were used. Findings: The paper focuses upon challenges associated with the implementation of the circular economy in SMEs, barriers for implementation and determinants. The results revealed that the concept is familiar and well-understood. However, businesses do not perceive it as a source of economic benefits. The following fields were considered as problematic: improvement of recycling efficiency, exploitation of production by-products, and substitution of non-renewable resources. Structural equation modeling revealed that introduction of CE practices is determined by several institutional factors, perceived risk and external standards and norms. Originality/value: The paper extends previous work concerning the management of SMEs by undertaking the issue of CE introduction. In particular, it focuses on the perception of barriers and stimulators CE practices and responding to several recent calls for research on CE awareness in SMEs. Another novel element can be find in using the theory of reasoned action (TRA) to explain the factors conditioning the introduction of CE practices into SMEs.

Celem opracowania jest przegląd wybranej literatury poświęconej działaniom innowacyjnym przedsiębiorstw oraz na podstawie badań własnych ocena działań innowacyjnych przedsiębiorstw sektora MŚP w aspekcie ich wpływu na konkurencyjność rynkową. Badania przeprowadzone w 2016 roku pokazały, że w opinii właścicieli firm z sektora MŚP, podejmowane działania innowacyjne wpływają na wzrost poziomu konkurencyjności przedsiębiorstw na rynku.
The level of competitiveness of enterprises from SME sector is determined by a large number of determinants, among which innovations play a key role. The aim of the study is a review of selected literature on the innovation activities of enterprises, and on the basis of own research, the assessment of the innovative activities of enterprises from SME sector in terms of their impact on market competitiveness. A study conducted in 2016 showed that in the opinion of the SME owners, innovative activities affect the growth of the competitiveness of enterprises in the market.

Since the bestselling book T.J. Peters and R.H. Waterman [1982] excellence is a recurring theme in theoretical considerations and practical solutions within the field of management interest. The main reason for selecting the EFQM model for analysis is that it is one of the more well-known models of excellence in Europe that helps contemporary organizations measure, anticipate, monitor the needs and interests of stakeholders, and track the performance of other organizations. The implementation of the model in enterprises involves specific difficulties that have been gathered and presented on the basis of independent research carried out worldwide and described in the literature.

This paper is focused on the performance measurement in small and medium enterprises. First, the characteristics of performance measurement in SME were described, next factors influence performance practices in this sector were characterized. Finally, the reference framework for designing performance measurement systems for small and medium enterprises was presented.

W artykule scharakteryzowano sektor MSP państw Grupy Wyszehradzkiej – Polski, Czech, Słowacji i Węgier, z uwzględnieniem jego kluczowej roli w osiąganiu celów środowiskowo-klimatycznych Unii Europejskiej i możliwości wzrostu konkurencyjności rynkowej organizacji przez wdrażanie ekoinnowacji. Na podstawie danych wtórnych, opublikowanych przez Portal Otwartych Danych Unii Europejskiej, dokonano analizy inicjatyw prośrodowiskowych, a także ich głównych źródeł akceleracji oraz inhibicji.
The article characterizes the SME sector of the Visegrad Group − Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, including its key role in achieving the environmental and climatic objectives of European Union and the possibility of increasing the market competitiveness of organization through the implementation of eco-innovations. Based on the secondary data, provided by The EU Open Data Portal, both the nature of pro-environmental initiatives and their main accelerators and inhibitors have been analyzed.

Opis:
Purpose: This article is devoted to identifying major problems and obstacles to the digital transformation of SMEs in Poland in the context of the Covid crisis and to indicating directions and methods to improve the digitisation level in the SME sector. Design/methodology/approach: This article seeks to answer the question of what the SME digitisation level in Poland is, what the main obstacles hampering the digital transformation process are and how they can be removed. The following research methods were used: reference works review, analysis of secondary sources (reports from OECD, the World Bank, the European Commission, the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development (PARP), Statistics Poland) and deductive reasoning. Findings: The digitisation level of SMEs in Poland is relatively low and the main obstacles to accelerating the digital transformation include the financial and competence limitations which can be removed only with institutional support. Practical implications: This article mentions methods and directions of measures initiated by the government and other institutions to reduce obstacles to SME digital transformation in Poland. Originality/value: The article has informative values as it contributes to the development of knowledge on the impact of the Covid-related crisis on the speed of the digital transformation in the SME sector in Poland and in other countries worldwide.

Rozwój koncepcji Przemysł 4.0, podyktowany potrzebą odwrócenia trendu spadku produkcji przemysłowej europejskich przedsiębiorstw, zmusza współczesne przedsiębiorstwa, szczególnie sektora MŚP, do szybkiego i elastycznego dostosowania się do zmieniających się warunków popytowych oraz redukcji kosztów wytwarzania oraz poszukiwania nowych rozwiązań biznesowych. W ramach proponowanej koncepcji Przemysł 4.0 następuje ścisłe połączenie obiektów fizycznych z siecią informacyjną. Powstają wyrafinowane sieci przedsiębiorstw, połączonych inteligentnymi zasobami, komunikującymi się za pośrednictwem Internetu. Funkcjonowanie małych i średnich przedsiębiorstw w sieciach produkcyjnych daje dziś wiele dodatkowych możliwości rozwoju, choć jednocześnie rodzi pewne obawy i wymaga rozwiązania wielu problemów. Celem artykułu jest analiza warunków rozwoju sieci produkcyjnych polskich małych i średnich przedsiębiorstw zdolnych do funkcjonowania w ramach koncepcji Przemysł 4.0 oraz zaproponowano model ich integracji.
Development of the concept Industry 4.0, dictated by the need to reverse the trend of decline in industrial production of European enterprises, forces modern enterprises, especially the SME sector, to adapt quickly and flexibly to changing demand conditions and to reduce production costs and search for new business solutions. As part of the proposed Industry 4.0 concept, there is a close connection between physical objects and the information network. Sophisticated enterprise networks are created, connected by intelligent resources, communicating over the Internet. The functioning of small and medium-sized enterprises in production networks today gives many additional development opportunities, although at the same time it raises some concerns and requires solving many problems. The main goal of the article is to analyze the conditions for the development of production networks of Polish small and medium enterprises able to function as a part of the Industry 4.0 concept and a model for their integration has been proposed.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to define Critical Success Factors (CSFs) of implementation of CRM (Customer Relationship Management) and ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Poland. Design/methodology/approach: Data was obtained from 83 respondents with work experience in SMEs in Poland that had undergone the implementation of an ERP/CRM system or the systems vendors. It was collected in the form of Google Form surveys and was analysed with the use of Spearman’s rank order correlation. Findings: The key CSFs comprise a thorough pre-implementation analysis and ensure sufficient financial resources for the implementation. Good communication between the ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) vendor and the SME’s employees, skills and experience of the vendor, as well as thorough preparation and familiarisation with the contract before implementation by both parties are also relevant. Research limitations/implications: The study limitations include a lack of research on a larger sample. Further work should cover the main barriers and threats connected with the implementation of ICT in SMEs in Poland and the ways of overcoming them. Practical implications: The findings can help SMEs’ decision-makers to prioritise the factors they have to take into account during planning an ICT implementation. Originality/value: This paper has highlighted the relevance of key CSFs in ICT implementation. The findings substantially add to the growing literature on digitalisation of SMEs.

Opis:
Purpose: The study aimed to determine whether family businesses in Poland are as involved in international activity as non-family businesses. Moreover, the intention was to identify differences in the forms of foreign expansion employed by family and non-family firms. Design/methodology/approach: The objectives were pursued based on primary research conducted in 188 family firms and 223 non-family firms operating on the Polish market. Findings: The analysis of the results indicates that family firms conduct business activity outside the domestic market significantly less frequently than non-family firms. The most common form of internationalization chosen by Polish family firms is export and import. Generally, these firms are not interested in joint ventures with foreign partners. Compared to non-family firms, Polish family firms establish divisions abroad significantly less frequently. However, they engage in non-equity cooperation more often than non-family firms. Practical implications: Knowledge about the involvement of family and non-family firms in international activity and their preferred forms of internationalization can be used by business environment institutions. Originality/value: The study results enrich the knowledge on the activity of Polish family firms on foreign markets as compared to similar activity of non-family businesses.

Introduction/background: Although internationalization is crucial for SMEs' development little research exists on the relationship between the attributes that create corporate global mindset, and their effects on companies’ internationalization. While existing research focuses on the isolated analysis of single factors, this paper introduces a set-theoretic approach, investigating interdependencies of complementarity, efficiency, and novelty among the various factors making up corporate global mindset. Aim of the paper: The study's objectives are to: (1) identify attributes (business postures) relating to corporate global mindset; and (2) identify and evaluate the combinations of corporate global mindset attributes that lead to internationalization behavior. Materials and methods: This study performs a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fs/QCA) to analyze how corporate global mindset relates to SMEs internationalization. The sample consists of 73 Polish SMEs. Results and conclusions: This study confirms that four different combinations of corporate global mindset attributes can lead to the same outcome – the high degree of internationalization. This research lies in providing an understanding of how different solutions can lead to the same result. This insight is helpful in gaining a deeper understanding of firms’ internationalization.
