- Cohesion policy is one of the most important policy areas of the European Union in the current programming period. Its main objective is to reduce regional disparities throughout the Union. Since its inception, it has evolved as a result of successive enlargements, changes in the economic and political situation in Europe and political preferences. These changes are visible in the current programming period and are also inevitable in the next phase. The aim of the article is to present the changes that will take place in the European Union Cohesion policy in the future programming period and to identify the most important challenges that this policy will have to face. The article presents a brief description of the current programming period, as well as the countries that are payers and net beneficiaries of this policy. The next part presents proposals for the new policy - the most important objectives, principles, as well as the amount of funds for individual Member States. The third part includes the identification of the most important future challenges for the cohesion policy: the exit of Great Britain from the European Union, climate change, security and migration issues, as well as potential enlargement of the Community to the Western Balkans countries.
