    Niniejszy esej analizuje trzy fazy rozwoju religijnego Edith Stein w kontekście debaty toczonej w latach 20. i 30. XX wieku na temat relacji pomiędzy religią a filozofią. Debata ta koncentrowała się na kwestii, czy filozofię chrześcijańską należy uznać za oksymoron. Stein, po przejściu na rzymski katolicyzm w 1922 roku, określiła się jako filozofka chrześcijańska. Uważała, że chrześcijaństwo i filozofia nie są dla siebie wzajemnie antagonistami, a partnerami w poszukiwaniu podstawowych prawd o życiu i śmierci. Trzy przemiany duchowe Stein, które esej ten bada pod względem historycznym i biograficznym, odnoszą się do jej decyzji o zastosowaniu fenomenologicznych metod i spostrzeżeń filozoficznych do sfery religii, przeniesienia zainteresowania filozofki na perspektywę chrześcijańską i wreszcie wyboru katolicyzmu jako systemu wiary.

    This paper analizes in what way Teresa of Avila affected the life and thinking processes of Edith Stein. The author focused especially on a particular moment in Edith Stein’s life, when she discovered Teresa of Avila, to show how it influenced Edith’s spirituality. While reading the book by Teresa of Avila, Edith Stein found God, the Only Truth, and this experience helped her to open up to the whole new world inside her. Teresa of Avila become Edith’s guide, who would lead her along the paths of faith, teaching her the way of prayer and developing her personality. In her many writings, Edith Stein tried to present Saint Teresa of Jesus in such a way, as to make her more familiar. Her insightful analysis of Teresa’s works resulted in the in-depth philosophical and theological reflection of her thought. Another task of the article was to show how much alike elements there are in lifes of both women in an attempt to illustrate, that the similar life experiences influence in a similar fashion the processes taking place inside the human soul.

    Philosophy opened Edith Stein the perspective of Absolute, but it was the testimony of people, for whom faith was the centre of life, that decided of her baptism in the Catholic church. Phenomenology prepared her mentally to the later reception of God but it was the discovery of the depth and strength of individual people’s faith in Christ that determined her conversion into Catholicism. First Edith Stein was deeply moved by her lecturer Max Scheler, who clearly presented her the world of catholic values. Than she experienced profoundly the death of her friend Adolph Reinach. His funeral was a kind of a spiritual breakthrough, which she later described as her first meeting with Cross and its victory over death. An enormous influence on her soul had an anonymous woman whom Edith met in the cathedral. Edith Stein was astounded to see somebody who could stop in the middle of a busy day and spend some precious moments talking to Someone whose presence Edith had not perceived yet. The last witness of faith, Saint Teresa of Ávila, was the one who definitely convinced Edith Stein that the sense of life cannot be found anywhere else but in Christ. That Saint evidently proved that it is Jesus Christ who is the root of human existence; He is the Truth and the final answer to all people’s questions and doubts. The lecture of Saint Teresa’s autobiography was the final step on Edith Stein’s road to God. It resulted in baptism in the Catholic church which took place in January 1922.
