Opis:
The study was aimed at mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of secondary phases related to deterioration of historic building materials. The investigations, carried out in the Holy Trinity Basilica in Kraków, Poland, focused on the southern facade of the 17th-century Myszkowskis Chapel, built of the Miocene Pińczów limestone. Lower part of the facade is covered with a cement render, and the exposed foundations are made of Jurassic limestone and Cretaceous sandstone, both of local origin from the Kraków region and neighbouring Carpathians, in the form of irregular blocks bound with a cement mortar. The wall surface exhibits clear signs of damage; from dark grey soiling and scaling to efflorescences. Sampled materials, deteriorated, altered crusts and efflorescences were analysed with optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman microspectroscopy methods. The secondary minerals distinguished include abundant gypsum CaSO42H2O, less common thenardite Na2SO4 (and/or mirabilite Na2SO410H2O), aphthitalite (K, Na)3Na(SO4)2, darapskite Na3(SO4)(NO3)H2O, ettringite Ca6Al2(SO4)3(OH)12 26H2O, monosulphite Ca4Al2O6SO311H2O, as well as scarce nitre KNO3, nitratine NaNO3 and halite NaCl. Gypsum usually forms surface crusts and fills the pores inside some materials. The efflorescences, sampled from the exposed foundations, consisted of thenardite and/or mirabilite, aphthitalite and darapskite, whereas ettringite and monosulphite were connected with cement renders. Traces of nitre, nitratine and halite were detected at various elements of the chapel facade and foundations. The origin of the salts is related to composition and physicochemical properties of the building materials, as well as to anthropogenic factors.

Opis:
Secondary arsenic minerals (SAM) formed recently in abandoned adits of the former Au-As mine at Złoty Stok (SW Poland) constitute two assemblages. The first consists of two types of scorodite, pitticite, kaňkite, hörnesite, picropharmacolite and minor amounts of jarosite and gypsum. Formation of the Fe arsenates took place under acidic conditions (pH ~3-4) as a result of löllingite, arsenopyrite and pyrite oxidation. Hörnesite and picropharmacolite crystallized as products of interactions between acidic arsenic-rich pore solutions with Mg-Ca carbonates from rocks that surround the ore mineralisation. The interaction of carbonates with acid pore solutions caused a rapid increase in pH that reached neutral or weakly alkaline values. The chemical compositions of hörnesite and picropharmacolite correspond well to their ideal compositions: (Mg3.17Ca0.07)Ʃ3.24(AsO4)1.90 8H2O and Ca4.31Mg0.92(HasO4)1.91[(AsO4)1.99(SO4)0.01]Ʃ2.00 11H2O, respectively. The second assemblage of SAM comprises exclusively the Mg-enriched erythrite [(Co1.66Mg1.03Ni0.28Ca0.05Zn0.02)Σ3.03(AsO4)1.99× 8H2O)] – annabergite [(Ni1.48Mg0.94Co0.66Ca0.12Fe0.01Zn0.01)S3.20AsO4)1.92× 8H2O] series. These minerals crystallized from slightly acidic (pH ~5–6) to neutral media. Dissolution of SAM and other secondary phases (e.g., schwertmannite) causes the release of arsenate and sulphate ions into mine waters. These ions can be reduced under anaerobic conditions by different strains of bacteria. The product of this proces is orpiment.

Opis:
Primary epithermal and secondary Cu mineralization in the Stary Lesieniec rhyodacite quarry, located within the Intra-Sudetic Depression, was studied using reflected light microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and electron microprobe. Samples containing copper sulphides, baryte, and secondary weathering minerals were collected from mineralized veinlets in the Upper Carboniferous rhyodacite. Copper sulphides (chalcocite Cu2S, djurleite Cu31S16, anilite Cu7S4 / digenite Cu9S5, and covellite CuS) are the major ore minerals and are associated with quartz, hematite, and very minor uraninite. The samples studied indicate phase transformation from chalcocite to anilite, which indicates that Cu sulphides began to crystallize at ~100°C. Then, during the epithermal stage of precipitation, the temperature of the solutions dropped <72°C, based on the Cu-S ternary diagram and anilite stability. Admixtures of Ag, Fe, Bi, and Se in the sulphides are very minor. Supergene paragenesis is represented by chrysocolla with minor brochantite and very scarce malachite. These only bear trace impurities at the anionic sites. The supergene oxidation process began with the formation of abundant chrysocolla, at a relatively neutral pH. After dropping of the pH to ~4–6, brochantite was deposited.

Opis:
Petrography of the Triassic Narrabeen Group (Southern Sydney Basin of Australia) was described by thin section, scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction techniques. Sandstone composition includes mostly lithic grains with minor quartz, feldspar, mica and heavy minerals; litharenites and sublitharenites are common and quartzarenites are rare. Quartz includes monocrystalline and polycrystalline grains while the feldspar includes both K-feldspar and plagioclase. Volcanic, sedimentary and chert rock fragments are present. In thin section porosity is visible in all units, particularly the coarse-grained deposits. Secondary porosity is greater than the primary porosity. The diagenetic alterations include compaction, quartz overgrowths, authigenic clay minerals, carbonate cement and authigenic feldspar. Compaction occurred in all units during diagenesis. Both early and late diagenetic carbonate cement is important in the Narrabeen Group. Pore-filling carbonate cement reduced porosity whereas dissolution of carbonate resulted in secondary porosity. Authigenic clay minerals are widespread in all units filling pores and occurring as grain-coatings on detrital and authigenic grains. Where they coat quartz grains they preserve porosity by preventing growth of quartz overgrowths. Dissolution of unstable feldspar and lithic grains provided secondary porosity. In the Narrabeen Group, shale and siltstone are abundant in the Wombarra Claystone, Stanwell Park Claystone, Bald Hill Claystone and Newport Formation, forming lithological seals and confining layers. Minor sandstone beds occur in the Wombarra Claystone and contain more porosity. Medium- and coarse-grained sandstone is common in the Coalcliff Sandstone, Scarborough Sandstone and Bulgo Sandstone and shows low to moderate porosity. Thus, these sandstone units probably contain gas or water.

Opis:
One of the challenges of today’s economies in the world is the need to increase the use of waste materials as secondary raw materials that are suitable for further use. This constitutes a core of the circular economy. This allows on the one hand to minimize the risk of price volatility and availability of resources, on the other, to meet the increasing global environmental requirements, creating the core of circular economy. This applies in particular to mineral resources. Circular economy implementation requires a number of problems. The basic one concern the development of clear definitions of waste/recyclables (secondary resources), as now many of the terms are used interchangeably or imprecise, resulting in information chaos and the inability to quantify the source data. Next are: to develop standards describing particular typical waste products (secondary) arising in subsequent recovery phases, then - keeping records and balancing the amount of processed waste and recovered secondary raw materials. This publication focuses on the problem of terminology and definitions, due to its importance and urgency for already conducted activities related to the preparation of raw materials policy of the country. The Polish naming and waste management legislation has been reviewed, against the background of European regulations. The definition of recycled materials (secondary resources) has been proposed for their classification strictly linked to the current classification of waste.

Opis:
Upper Miocene sandstones in the Sava Depression (Northern Croatia) are potential targets for carbon dioxide (CO2)-based enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes or mineral carbonation with reservoir brine. In general, sandstone lithology, even rich with aluminosilicate minerals, is not the most favourable rock medium for efficient sequestration of CO2 in minerals. However, CO2 is naturally sequestered in minerals when CO2 is injected into sandstone reservoirs and subdued to carbonation. The timescale of such sequestration is on the order of 104–105 years. Upper Miocene sandstones in the Sava Depression could incorporate up to 25% of aluminosilicate minerals (10% K-feldspars) and up to 20% dolomites and often laterally transition between pelitic and psammitic lithofacies, rich in clay minerals (15% micas). Total volumes are approximately 107 and 62 million m3 (approximately 268 and 155 million t of rocks), respectively for the potential injection reservoirs in the Ivanić Field. Oil saturation in the injection intervals is estimated to be approximately 14.8 and 4.1 million m3 respectively. Geochemical analogies and mineralogy can be used to support predictions for the low percentages of injected CO2 that may be stored during carbonation and form secondary minerals

Opis:
The polymetallic Radzimowice deposit is located in the vicinity ofRadzimowice village, about 20 km east of Jelenia Góra (Western Sudetes, Poland). The deposit consists of several ore veins. The primary ore assemblage is represented by arsenopyrite, pyrite and chalcopyrite, and less common galena, sphalerite, Cu-Pb-Sb sulphosalts of Cu andPb, and native gold. The mining activity in this area started in the mid-12th century and lasted until the mid-20th century. This paper presents general information about typical parageneses of secondary minerals occurring in the oxidation zone of the Radzimowice deposit. Based on the mineralogical investigations, 43 secondary mineral species have been recognized. Such a rich assemblage of secondary minerals makes the oxidation zone one of the most interesting formations of this kind in Poland. Phosphates (pseudomalachite, phosphosiderite) and sulphides (covellite, chalcocite) of copper were ascertained in the near-surface part of the supergene zone. Secondary lead minerals (cerussite, pyromorphite and mimetite) were found only in medieval dumps. Phosphates and sulphides of Cu and supergene lead minerals belong to sub-recent secondary parageneses. Since the end of local mining activity in 1957, the intensive weathering processes caused the decomposition of ore minerals in the mine galleries, producing recently forming associations of new minerals. The first mineral paragenesis is represented by recently formed arsenates. Kankite, scorodite and zykaite are the most widespread constituents of this assemblage. Large accumulations ofpitticite, forming stalagmites up to 10 cm in length, are sometimes found in old mine galleries. In those parts of the abandoned mine, where pyrite is a dominant primary mineral, huge accumulations of the minerals related to acid mine drainage are present. Schwertmannite, ferrihydrite and poorly crystalline goethite are the main representatives of this paragenesis. Associations of basic copper sulphates are present in all parts of the abandoned mine. Langite, posnjakite, brochantite and devilline are the most common minerals of this assemblage. Sulphates of Cu and Al (chalcoalumite and cyanotrichite), native copper, cuprite and malachite are locally found to coexist with these phases. Precipitations of secondary minerals play an important role in the retention and liberation of considerable amounts of toxic elements. Dissolution ofthese phases can result in the release ofarsenic and heavy metals into the groundwater and in the migration ofthese elements into the environment.

For 155 years, the world's most famous diamond deposits have been known from South Africa. The first discoveries that had a casual character took place in the second half of the 19th century in the Kimberley region where diamonds are associated either with kimberlite pipes or occur as secondary deposits of the river alluvia. Minerals that formed in the upper mantle under high p-T conditions were transported to the surface by magmas and deposited around craters due to lava explosions. Surfice waters leached and transported diamonds either to the crater or to the neighbourhood. These processes have led to diamond production both from the deep and open-pit mines which is presented in the paper.

The former gold and silver mine of Breiner, is located in the village of Băiuţ, in the mining area of Băiuţ-Tibleş (Maramureş, Romania). The local polymetallic occurrences are characterized by a rich sulfide (Cu, Pb, Zn sulfides/sulfosalts) and arsenic mineralization. While the primary mineralization is relatively well known, the diverse paragenesis of second- ary mineralization has never been the subject of detailed research. Based on diffraction studies, several species of weathered minerals have been identified, most of which have never been reported in the study area before. The dominant minerals in the mine belong to the melanterite and halotrichite groups. The occurrence of rare phases on a global scale has also been observed - zaherite Al12(SO4)5(OH)26 20H2O, tooeleite Fe6(AS3+O3)4(SO4)(OH)44H2 and wattevilleite - a species with uncertain chemistry, possibly Na2Ca(SO4)24H2O. The formation of these parageneses is related to currently occurring weathering processes of primary ore mineralization that undergoes decomposition under low pH conditions.

Fluctuations of the groundwater level have complex origins. Among many natural agents influencing this phenomenon, researchers list cosmic factors, most commonly solar activities. However, publications lack results ofstatistical analyzes confirming this correlation. This paper presents the outcome of an investigation on the dependence between the low-energy flux ofsecondary cosmic radiation (determined by solar cycles) and the variability of the groundwater level. Data for the study originate from the cosmic radiation station in Moscow and from the PGI-NRI groundwater monitoring network and concern the period of 1966-2016. 711 groundwater monitoring sites, located all over Poland, have been analyzed. Calculated values of Spearman correlation coefficients have indicated good significant correlation in 65% of all analyzed points. The strength of the established relations is generally poor (30%) or very poor (18%). Correlations of moderate intensity are relatively rare (15%), whereas strong correlations occur only occasionally (2%). Very strong correlations were not detected at all. In the overall sample tested, the number ofpositively correlated points (37%) exceeded those with a negative correlation (28%). Also, the strength of the relations is higher in the positively correlated points. On national scale, it is possible to distinguish some areas with a dominance of points with either positive or negative correlations. Heterogeneous direction of the observed relationships allowedfor a conclusion that there are unknown processes that model effects of the sun or cosmic rays on meteorological elements such as precipitation and air temperature, and thus indirectly influence the groundwater level.

Opis:
The study area is located within the Silesia-Cracow zinc-lead ore district. Secondary minerals were collected from the reclaimed zinc-lead underground mine in Bolesław and from the currently operated zinc-lead underground mine Olkusz-Pomorzany. The main goal of investigations was the geochemical and mineralogical comparison of weathering zone developed within horst and tectonic graben. Semi-quantitative chemical composition was determined using the SEM-EDS method and quantitative chemical composition was determined employing the EMP microanalysis. Mineralogical investigations were performed with the XRD. The predominant zinc mineral of weathering zone located within tectonic horst is hemimorphite. No primary and secondary lead minerals were observed in this zone. In contrast, the weathering zone within tectonic graben contains secondary carbonate zinc and lead minerals. These differences could result from pervasive sulfide minerals (especially marcasite) in a graben unit, and limestones which are the main gangue rock of this zinc-lead ore.

Results of sulphur isotope analyses in sulphides by use of modern ion microprobe equipment – SHRIMP IIe/MC – are described in the paper. Measurements with an application of the SIMS method indicate high precision, fast procedure as well as high repeatability of results. Considering the sulphur isotopic ratio measured by the IRMS (the conventional method of gas spectrometry), advantage of the SIMS method is clearly visible. It allows for observation of the analysed surface at the micron-scale and for very precise selection of the area of analysis (about 20 μm in diameter), including the avoiding of other mineral microinclusions or microfractures in sulphide crystals, which are common features. In the case of the IRMS sulphur isotope analyses sample homogenization strongly influenced obtained results. The SIMS ion microprobe technique provides high spatial resolution which enables more reliable results. In the case of pyrites analysed from the abandoned Au–Cu–As Radzimowice deposit results of isotopic sulphur are close to δ34S = 0‰ (weighted average of δ34S for sample 10B is +0.84 ±0.24‰, n = 60, for sample M20 +0.37 ±0.13‰, n = 35, and for sample M21 –0.03 ±0.32‰, n = 26), which indicates the source of sulphur from processes related to magmas probably of mantle or lower crust origins. On the other hand pyrites from the old mining prospect in Leszczyniec have negative δ[sup]34[/sup]S values below –1‰ (ranging from –3.24 ±0.08‰ to –1.19 ±0.09‰), which suggest a contaminationprocess and possible minor input of sedimentary protolith during the magma generation.

The ore assemblages are rich in Cu, and poor in Pb, Ag, As and Fe. The Miedzianka- -Ciechanowice deposits were mined from the early Middle Ages to the middle of the 20th

Opis:
Tantalum, despite the low consumption level, is one of the strategically important metals for the world economy. In terms of the world production volume, it places oneself on a distant position; however, its price was one of the highest at the beginning of the 21st century. Tantalum is a transition metal with a high melting point and high chemical resistance, which determines the spectrum of its applications. It is used mainly in the capacitors production, sputtering and as an additive for superalloys. The 21stcentury is a period of noticeable changes in the structure of quantitative supplies, consumption centres and price fluctuation. There are numerous but small centres of primary production (artisanal mines) in Africa. Sources of tantalum raw-materials (mineral deposits and its reserves), basic factors determining the economic situation on the market, substitution possibilities and the prices evolution are presented and assessed in the paper. Marginal significance of the economy of tantalum raw materials for Poland is mentioned.

Opis:
The paper presents the characteristics of mineral structures and ore textures observed in lowermost Zechstein sediments from the Dębinka P-10 borehole based on microscopic observations in reflected light. Detailed studies of ore textures and structures in individual lithologic intervals and geochemical zones were performed. Microscopic observation revealed many interesting features of mineralization and allowed identification of mineral assemblages in host sediments. Petrographic analysis of polished sections contributed to precise description of a complex relationship between various ore textures and structures in relation to gauge minerals and host sediments. Microscopic studies of polished sections enabled to identify the following ore minerals: bornite, chalcocite, digenite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, pyrite, covellite and arsenopyrite, and oxides: hematite and magnetite. The range of geochemical facies, which determine the forms of occurrence of ore minerals and oxides, is a very important phenomenon affecting the occurrence of minerals in the form of individual structures and the formation of some ore textures.
