Opis:
Phyllites from the Dewon-Pokrzywna deposit in the Opava Mts., SW Poland, were investigated by XRD (Rietveld method), XRF, EPMA, SEM, and ATR-FTIR from the perspective of their potential usage as a buffer and/or backfill material in a geological repository of radioactive waste. Organic matter dispersed in the phyllite matrix was analysed by GC-MS. Fine-grained Mg-Fe-muscovite (13 to 29 wt.%), Fe-ripidolite (10 to 25 wt.%), detrital quartz (20 to 46 wt.%), and albite (7 to 28 wt.%) ± microcline, illite or illite/smectite, and kaolinite are major minerals in phyllite samples. The chlorite/muscovite ratio ranges from 0.65 to 1.1. Mg-annite inherited from the precursor rock is a minor constituent. Detrital ilmenite is a dominant accessory mineral. Ancylite-(Ce) occurs in quartz-calcite-ripidolite veins. Two types of phyllite have been distinguished based on the proportion of phyllosilicates to silt fraction: argillaceous (47 to 55 wt.% phyllosilicates) and silt-rich (28 wt.% phyllosilicates). Argillaceous phyllite shows elevated content of alumina and moderate concentration of silica. It is highly enriched in Fe compared to phyllites from other localities worldwide. The BET specific surface area of argillaceous phyllite ranges from 1.73 to 3.64 m2/g. Whole-rock chemical composition, mineral assemblages, chlorite geothermometry, and the occurrence of aliphatic hydrocarbons suggest that argillaceous phyllite originated from a pelagic pelite protolith under low-temperature (260-370°C) greenschist to subgreenschist facies conditions. Persistent biomarkers are indicative of bacterial degradation of planktonic organic matter suspended in a high water column. Enrichment in Fe-rich chlorite and Mg,Fe-muscovite, low volume of interconnected pores with dominant mesopores suggest that argillaceous phyllite from the Dewon-Pokrzywna deposit is a potential candidate for a buffer and/or backfill material.

Opis:
The geosite Zygmuntówka (Sigismund ) quarry, located at Czerwona Góra near Chęciny in SW part of the Holy Cross Mountains, is the oldest and the most famous among the so-called Chęciny „marble” quarries which provided stones for constructing numerous important buildings in the region and beyond. Upper Permian conglomerates (Czerwona Góra Formation), with a thickness of several tens of metres, outcrop in this area. The conglomerates are clast- and locally mud-supported and consist of light grey and beige carbonate pebbles and cobbles chaotically distributed within the reddish-brown silty-carbonate-ferriferous matrix. The conglomerates represent continental alluvial fan deposits deposited under arid and semiarid climate conditions. The quarry, of a regional rank, is well suited for both geoeducation and geotourism purposes.

Opis:
The Owadów-Brzezinki quarry is one of the most important paleontological sites in Poland, known from its exceptionally well-preserved Late Jurassic (Tithonian) fossils of marine and terrestrial biota, including horseshoe crabs and decapod crustaceans, rare ammonites, various insects and pterosaurs. This paper describes the discovery of new, well preserved reptile bones (ichthyosaurs, turtles and crocodylomorphs), which adds sigmficantly to our knowledge of these three gr°upü. The occurrence of large marine reptiles show open marine connections with the Sub- boreal-Boreal areas (both with Subboreal English seas and Boreal Arctic areas), and the Submediterranean Province (corresponding to the area of southern Germany).

Opis:
Landscape alteration is generally one of the most significant impacts caused by surface mining and quarrying, particularly when the excavation activities are located within environmentally sensitive areas. The paper describes the results of two different methods of visual impact assessment applied to a number of case studies in Małopolska. The application involves areas with significant landscape values and places of weekend, summer and winter holidays for many people living in the Silesian and Kraków urban-industrial agglomerations. One of the two methods refers to the EC decision 272/02, which establishes ecological criteria for the award of the Community eco-label for hard floor-coverings. The second method is based on the application of a visual impact indicator (Lvi) in which two objective aspects of landscape alteration are included: the extent of the visible excavation and its chromatic contrast with the surroundings. The results of the two methods are compared and discussed for each of the case studies considered.

Opis:
In the northern part of the Podhale Region, nearly 100 years ago, Matkowski (1924, 1928) described gravels exposed in a quarry in Szaflary and considered them to be moraine sediments - Szaflar moraine. Romer (1929) confirmed this interpretation of the sediments. Later studies of Halicki (1930), Klimaszewski (1948, 1988), Birkenmajer (1976) and Birkenmajer and Stuchlik (1975) completely excluded the possibility of moraines in this area and showed that these sediments have are of fluvioglacial origin. Comparing the quarry's ranges due to exploitation, it was found that the authors could observe various deposits exposed during the progress of exploitation towards the west. In the profiles of trenches for new buildings to the NW from the quarry, clays containing sands and gravels and individual boulders and blocks of quartzite and granite with a diameterof0.8 to 1.2m were found. The exposed erratics exactly correspond to the description of the moraine by Matkowski (1924, 1928) from the quarry in Szaflary. In addition, in the recently drilled Nowy Targ PIG-2 borehole, similarly developed pieces were found at a depth of19.7-69.5 m. Combining archival data and new facts from drilling and exposures, a view can be proposed that, during the Southern Polish Glaciations, the Tatra glaciers reached the Nowy Targ Basin and perhaps the foothills of the Gorce Mts, which was already suggested by Rehman (1895), Zapatowicz (1913) and Matkowski (1928).

Opis:
The paper concerns the Liban quarry in Cracow, which is located in the Podgórze district of Cracow. It shows the outline of the geological structure and history of quarrying, while the current topography and dominant elements of the relief of this object are discussed in more detail. Anthropogenic changes in the natural environment of the quarry have revealed its geodiversity and enhanced its biodiversity. It contains vertical rocky walls, debris cones, waste-heaps, a vast undulated surface of the quarry bottom, as well as diverse flora and fauna. Within the borders of the Liban quarry, the remains of industrial buildings and the staging for the film entitled "Schindler's List” have survived. Despite the fact that the extraction has already finished a long time ago, the quarry has not been systematically reclaimed or developed.

Opis:
The Przemyśl Fortress is a huge complex of defensive objects from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Various types of objects, ruins and remains of the fortress and signs of fights have been preserved to different extents in the area to this day. They constitute a huge problem when determining landslides. The greatest difficulties are caused by vegetation-covered ruins of forts, trenches, remnants of ramparts and defense ditches, and signs of fights preserved in places. Such residues can be interpreted as a landslide or a part of it, especially if they occur in a neighbourhood or inside a landslide. The problem then arises of clearly identifying the boundaries of the landslide and the correct identification of its internal forms, e.g. a devastated trench around the fort can be marked as a landslide. Similar difficulties are provided by numerous inactive quarries, excavations, clay pits, e.g. a closed limestone open-pit mine from the 19th century, located in Kruhel Wielki. Elements of the old mine are deceptively reminiscent of intra-fieldforms and they are difficult to separate from the real colluvial forms of the neighbouring landslide. Difficulties in determining landslides arise not only from the history of this region and its geological structure, but also from the degree of urbanization of the area. Strong anthropopression blurs the natural morphology of the slopes, and the limited availability of the area makes cartographic work difficult. It is difficult to distinguish between natural and artificial forms in such areas. Good examples are landslides on the ski slope, on the municipal cemetery, in the castle park and in the area of military areas, housing estates and allotments.
