Opis:
The paper presents the use of the Persistent Scatterers Interferometry (PSI) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data to determine magnitude of subsidence in area of the town ofWieliczka. The town is home to a unique salt mine, over 700 years old, one of the best known tourist attractions in Poland. Each year the mine is visited by about 1 million tourists from all over the world and in 1978 UNESCO placed it on its first International List of theWorld Cultural and Natural Heritage. There is direct evidence that the mining has been influencing stability of ground and buildings in the town, which is located above the mine. The application of the PSI SPINUA technique made it possible to identify large number of radar targets (with density exceeding 100 PS/km2), suitable for monitoring ground motion in the Wieliczka area. The results show continuous subsidence with average annual movements ranging from a few millimeter per year to 24 mm/yr in the period 1992–2000. The detected subsiding zone very well corresponds to the extent of the underground salt mine. There are also indications of possible connections between the mine-induced subsidence and the presence of the old large landslides occurring on the north-facing slopes south of the Wieliczka Salt Mine.

Opis:
Underground coal mining causes surface changes such as subsidence and land transformation. The knowledge of the character of subsidence in the past and in the present provides useful information for example for spatial development. In this paper the methodology of determining surface height changes based on cartographic modelling in geographic information system (GIS) is presented. It has been applied to two test areas in a former coal basin in the Walbrzych region (SW Poland) that is characterised by complex geological conditions. In the result of a set of interpolation and map algebra operations surface height changes have been determined and the character of subsidence in a period of over 120 years (1886-2009) has been assessed. These results have been compared with the results of predictions based on the empirical Knothe theory of subsidence calculations using spatial statistics parameters. It has been found that theoretical modelling when applied in areas of complex mining and geological conditions produces lower subsidence values and more uniform subsidence surface than the applied method based on actual elevation data. The calculated surface height changes in the analysed period have been presented graphically and described.

Opis:
The mining exploitation of hard coal in Upper Silesia has been conducted since XIX century and continues to the present days. Different methods of monitoring subsidence of the earth surface were applied in this area, startingfrom analysis of topographic maps compiled in different period of time, precise levelling and GPS measurements. Nowadays satellite interferometry seems to be use- ful and effective tool for these purposes. PS data from ERS and ENVISAT satellites very well illustrate subsidence occurring in the active mining areas where subsidence does not exceed- 40 mm /yr. These data correspond very well with subsidencepredictive models prepared by mining companies. However, the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB) mining area subsides even up to 600 mm/yr (locally even more). Therefore, it is necessary to apply a different methodology. One of the solutions to this problem could be differential interferograms obtainedfrom L-band SAR images. Combination of C-Band (ERS, Envisat) andL-band (ALOS) shows excellent results. C-band SAR satellites are useful for detecting smaller displacements; in contrary L-band satellites are able to monitor surface defor- mations in range of several decimetres, being possible to detect progress of mining front.

Opis:
The paper presents analysis of geophysical tests conducted in Triassic strata and the roof of the carboniferous formation, course of fill operations, and assessment of their results, for purposes of an investment located in Czeladź, on the post-mining area of mine "Saturn”. Electrical resistance survey (ERS) demonstrated presence of numerous low - and high resistive anomalies located both in Triassic and carboniferous strata. ERS data, analysis of geological profiles, fill operations, post-completion ERS, and other observations, allowed evaluation of the ground surface safety in terms of mine subsidence appearance and formulation of recommendations for building designers. Conducted fill operations showed presence of voids, mainly in the eastern part of the investment, which have been filled up in the range of individual bore holes. Post-completion ERS demonstrated increase of electrical resistivity particularly at places, where it was before filling of voids. This observation indicates reduction of precipitation waters migration, hence slowing or even elimination of erosion and suffusion phenomena, supporting the development of voids, followed by their filling with loose material from the soft overburden rocks. Conducted works should provide sufficient stability of the investment area as well as ensure appropriate conditions for foundation of the building, especially in the context of compactness of the ground.
