Opis:
The article presents a critical opinion about the recognition of hydrogeological conditions described in the geological report on the Oczkowice lignite deposit. It is shown that the report does not include sufficient recognition of hydrogeological conditions as well as chemical analyses of groundwater in the Paleogene-Neogene aquifers, where an upward flow of high salinity groundwater from the Mesozoic basement was found. Moreover, the occurrence of sulphides in the Miocene sediments has not been proven, and it can significantly influence the water quality in the pit. There are also numerous errors and unacceptable simplifications in the numerical hydrogeological model which is an integral part of the report. It is assessed that the recognition of hydrogeological conditions included in the report cannot be treated as a basis for a proper development of neither a report on deposit dewatering nor an Environmental Impact Assessment report.

The south-western Wielkopolska territory belongs to the richest lignite-bearing areas in Poland. In total, there are estimated over 6.4 billion Mg of lignite possible to extraction. The largest deposits are located in tectonic grabens. Many of currently used lithostrati- graphic units of the Paleogene and Neogene were created in this area. The major lignite seams are of the Middle Miocene age and occur within the Ścinawa Formation - the 2nd Lusatian group, and within the Grey Clays Member (Mid-Polish Member) - the 1st Mid-Polish group. The discussed in detail “Poniec-Krobia” and “Oczkowice’” deposits have very favorable geological and mining as well as chemical and technological parameters. Similarly, large resources, reaching nearly 1 billion Mg of lignite and the average calorific value exceeding 10 MJ/kg, have been determined in the most recent documentation for the “Oczkowice” lignite deposits.

Opis:
The accumulation of large amounts of phytogenic matter, leading to the formation of lignite deposits of economic importance, has been determined by two groups of external factors: (a) climatic factors determining the indispensable production of organic matter and (b) geological factors allowing preservation of this matter in the sediment and its diagenetic transformation in the process of coalification. The overriding item among climatic factors was obviously the production of suitable amounts of phytogenic matter. It could be accumulated only under favourable vegetation conditions and therefore a warm and humid climate was a condition sine qua non for the intensive production of phytogenic matter. Problems of lignite origin do not generally relate to the lack of production of phytogenic material, but to preventing preservation in the sediment due to rapid oxidation of this material in very warm conditions. Therefore, the coal-forming process was constrained by two critical temperature values, which had to be neither too low nor too high, wherein sufficiently high humidity persisted throughout the process. Therefore, the range of mean annual temperature, which ensured favourable conditions for the growth and preservation of phytogenic matter, was from approx. 15.5 to 24°C. In the Cenozoic, such conditions commenced in the Early Oligocene and persisted up to the later Miocene – this was the interval of the most intense anthracogenesis in the Polish Lowlands. In the widespread lowland areas, lush swamp forests and peat fens developed, and thick lignite seams reflect the accumulation of phytogenic matter. This interval began with the cooling at the Eocene/Oligocene boundary and terminated at the beginning of the next cooling and drying phase known as that of the “C4 grassland” in the Late Miocene. Both the critical points are related to the surpassing of temperature limits: too high for the preservation of phytogenic deposits, and too low for the extensive development of lignite-forming vegetation. An important condition for the emergence of a large thickness of phytogenic sediments is primarily an existence of the accomodation space, where a considerable amount of plant matter might accumulate. This occurred only in conditions of dynamic equilibrium between the growth of plant matter and the lowering of the depositional surface, which ensured stabilization of the groundwater level. The rate of subsidence of the depositional surface must be balanced by the rate of vegetation growth. Therefore, no single lignite seam corresponding in age to the whole period of potential accumulation was formed at that time. Rather, a few lignite seams, separated by thick successions of mineral deposits, then formed. The vegetation of the wetlands which created the individual lignite seams was similar, this being mostly a facies element. Differences in the composition of vegetation are found mainly in plant communities outside peat-fens and it is the plants outside of the wetlands which allowed for subsequent dating of the lignite seams. The thermophilous vegetation was replaced by plants of lower thermal requirements during the progressive climate cooling towards the end of the Miocene. The ultimate cooling and completion of peat/lignite production was generated by the Middle Miocene uplift of the Carpathians arc in the Alpine orogeny. This natural barrier considerably limited the circulation of warm and humid air masses from the south to the Polish Lowlands area.

Opis:
This paper presents reclamation of post-mining lignite open pits by flooding in Poland. Besides, it provides some data on hydrogeological conditions of Polish lignite mines. Reclamation by flooding is presently used in post-mining voids in the Adamów Lignite Mine and the Konin Lignite Mine, and it is anticipated to be used in the future, in the case of large-space abandoned open pits in the Turów Lignite Mine and the Bełchatów Lignite Mine, whose volume will exceed one billion cubic meters. Pit lakes in Poland are formed deliberately as a planned part of the after-use of lignite surface mine voids and they are used as wildlife habitats, fisheries, water sports venues or other forms of amenity. In each case the mine voids are flooded by natural groundwater inflow, water pumped out from dewatering system and water from rivers and courses. In the existing and abandoned Polish lignite open pits there are favorable conditions in terms of water quality formation, so the water in pit lakes is of a good quality. However, the studies indicate a potential threat to the water quality in pit lakes, where they are recharged only by groundwater. Therefore, additional recharge the void with surface water or water pumped out from dewatering wells reduces the probable pit lakes deterioration.

Opis:
Bursa-Orhaneli lignite coalfield is located in the North-West of Turkey. This coalfield has three sectors: Burmu, Çivili, and Sagirlar, having similar stratigraphic sequences in the northwest of Bursa Province. The mined coal seam is Miocene of age, and its thickness varies between 1.10-14.50 m. The pre-Neogene rocks in the area are made up of Palaeozoic aged metamorphic schists and marbles, and Upper Cretaceous aged ophiolites. The Neogene formations of detrital rocks with basal conglomerates, coal bearing marl and tuffites are found at the base, and volcanic basalt tuffs and andesite lava flows, at the top. The post-Neogene sediments are Pleistocene aged gravels and Holocene alluvium. The deposit has been worked as an open-pit mine in the Burmu and Sagirlar sectors and is going to be worked by underground mining methods in the near future. The chemical analysis have shown that the percentage of water is 22.66-27.30%, ash 24.57-44.39%, volatile matter 18.52-29.44%, fixed carbon 23.87-29.52%, and total sulphur 1.84-2.64% in the original coal, and its calorific value is 2010-3032 kcal/kg, whereas the air dried coal is composed of 5.51-10.41% water, 26.99-54.18% ash, 21.83-35.49% volatile matter, 28.10-36.03% fixed carbon, and 2.42-3.06% total sulphur, with calorific value of 2483-3938 kcal/kg. The proven and workable lignite reserves are 60,877,079 and 47,308,406 tonnes respectively. Stripping and production operations are made by a dragline, excavators and trucks. Mined coal is used both in domestic heating and the Orhaneli thermic power plant, which has a capacity of 1x210 MW.

Dnieprovsky lignite basin, situated in central part of Ukraine over the area of about 400 km2, contains more than 150 deposits. About 55 deposits have industrial significance. Their reserves are 2.4 billion tons. Seams and lenses of coaly clays and sands overlay the coal series and occur between coal packets. The coaly clays are classified into this category because their ash content exceeds 40%. Our investigations show that coaly rocks are similar to lignite in composition and properties. They have ash content from 40% up to 60%, the same elementary composition of organic matter. As well as bitumen and humic acids yield. It has been established that coaly rocks can be used as energy and chemical raw material, the basis of good carbon sorbents with high adsorptional capacitance. The recommendation of coaly rocks for mining and processing is difficult because of lack of information in geological reports on their quantity, composition and properties, as they are considered as host rocks but not as mineral resources. If the usable coal limit was accepted at 50% of ash content, the coal reserves of some deposits would have increased 1.5-2 times.

Sorption studies, to determine the CO2 sorption capacity of coal, were carried out using eight ortho-lignite samples of different lithotypes, to investigate the possibility of CO2 storage in lignite deposits. Equations determining a number of parameters and indicators used to delineate the experimental data and to differentiate the samples examined include: Langmuir isotherms; the Dubinin-Radushkevich (DR) equation that describes the theory of volume filling of micropores; and the Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) equation used to calculate the volume and surface area of a monolayer. The results obtained were compared with the petrographic composition and ultimate and proximate analysis of lignite. There is a large correlation between sorption and petrographic composition, a positive impact of the Gelification Index on the sorption process and a clear relationship between the sorption (Langmuir and DR) and ash content. The best CO2 sorption properties were found for xylo-detritic and detro-xylitic lignites. Based on the tests carried out, a preliminary assessment of the suitability of lignite for CO2 storage can be made.

We expected that our paper on the crevasse-splay microdelta (Chomiak et al., 2019) would arouse the interest of other researchers for at least two reasons. First, this is the first such palaeoform discovered and described within the Mid-Miocene lignite seam in Poland. Second, the microdelta siliciclastic deposits are strongly deformed both ductile and brittle. Therefore, we would like to thank Tom van Loon for his effort to comment on our article, including his words of appreciation, and above all, for pointing out some of the terminological and interpretative shortcomings. Our reply will be in line with the issues discussed in his comment.

Opis:
The PGI research of lignite was primarily focused in the area of eastern Poland. An extensive research of the lignite deposit geology mmediately after the end of World War II led to numerous discoveries of large lignite deposits, including some of the biggest in Europe (Legnica, Bełchatów, Poznań Tectonic Trough). The data collected during exploration and prospection of lignite deposits made possible to elaborate stratigraphy (litho- and palynostratigraphy) of Paleogene/Neogene lignite-bearing association on the Polish Lowlands and prepare its detail correlation with the stratigraphic schemes of East Germany. Sedimentological studies of lignite-bearing association led to the definition of basic types of lignite-bearing facies, related to sedimentary conditions in different zones of alluvial sedimentary basins. They also allowed the establishment of relationships between lignite-bearing sedimentation and tectonic evolution of the lignite basins in tectonic depressions and cups of salt domes. Recently, the impact of climate change on the development of brown coal sediments has been subject to study and the critical thermal conditions for the most intense anthracogenesis in the Polish Lowlands, which took place in Miocene, were defined.

Opis:
The paper presents a brownfield site investigation of the area where lignite was formerly exploited with an underground mining method. The Miocene lignite seams were folded by glaciers and covered with a layer of highly compacted sediments with sands on top. Yet eighty years after the extraction ceased, new sinkholes still develop. The aim of this work is to determine both the mechanical parameters of soil in the area of sinkholes and the changes in the values of these parameters induced by the process of sinkhole formation. The applied methodology involves in-situ investigations. Soil state and strength parameters were examined with the use of CPTU and DPL tests, while stiffness parameters were determined in the SDMT test. The evaluated parameters of soil may provide data for numerical modelling of the process of sinkhole formation and may significantly simplify future in-situ investigations in the area where the soil profile shows high natural changeability of state. The knowledge of values of parameters in a sinkhole and outside it enables easier differentiation between the zones of undisturbed soil and zones where sinkholes formed in the past (and were then backfilled) or where the sinkhole formation process is currently in progress.

Opis:
Palynological analysis of the Tomisławice opencast mine deposits has allowed reconstruction of the plant communities and investigation of the evolution of sedimentary environments at various stages of lignite-forming marsh development, recorded in the composition of pollen assemblages from deposits of the 1st Mid-Polish lignite seam (MPLS-1). Rich pollen communities from an ~9 m thick section has enabled study of the succession of plant communities and of the evolution of phytogenic sedimentation. The pollen succession indicates that the assemblages in the whole lignite seam represent the VIII Celtipollenites verus pollen Zone. Slight differences in the composition of the communities reflect different stages of basin development, depending more on the variable water dynamics than on climatic oscillations. Lignite of the MPLS-1 developed in a continental regime on alluvial plains. Changes in the succession of plant communities in the Tomisławice section record flooding-drainage cycles caused by groundwater level oscillations. Peat bog accumulation took place in river basins, in which the lack of siliciclastic intercalations within the massive lignite seams points to weak fluvial dynamics. A rise in groundwater level and/or surface water resulted in flooding of the marshes and the formation of an extensive shallow lake basin, as shown by the presence of freshwater algae and pollen of aquatic plants. The section as a whole does not record an increased contribution of thermophilic plant taxa. The flora was generally dominated by warm-temperate and thermophilic species, without the participation of strongly thermophilic vegetation, which indicates that the lignite seam in the Tomis³awice opencast mine was formed in the generally stable conditions of a warm temperate climate.
