Opis:
A high-resolution correlation of ten upper Givetian-Frasnian sections spread over the differ ent facies environments of the Eastern Anti-Atlas (Morocco) is established using graphic correlation. The mea sured strati graphic ranges of eighty-five cono dont taxa have been as sem bled into a chronostratigraphic framework. The developed regional composite subdivides the Frasnian into 501 composite standard units (CSU) based on the original thickness of the reference section (Bou Tchrafine). This is a higher resolution than obtained by the classic biozone correlation. Based on the conodont data available for this correlation project, the jamieae and Lower rhenana zones could not be recognised in the sections.

A total of 297 samples for palaeomagnetic studies were collected from Upper Gzhelian through Spathian sediments of the Isfjorden area (central Spitsbergen). In spite of extensive Cenozoic remagnetisation the studied rocks yielded palaeomagnetic poles and magnetostratigraphy. Almost all Permian samples were reversely magnetised during Kiaman superchron. Normal-polarity samples appear in the Ufimian and Kazanian sediments. The topmost samples from the Kapp Starostin Formation (Upper Permian) contain reverse polarity. The magnetic polarity record noted in the Early Triassic (Griesbachian-Spathian) sequences is fully convergent with magnetic polarity schemes obtained in the Canadian Arctic and Deltadalen type section.

The Givetian and Frasnian conodont suc cession investigated in the Compte section (Spanish Pyrenees) is subdivided into nine Givetian standard conodont zones and two Frasnian zones (MN zones). This succession allows precise identifcation of the lower/middle Givetian, middle/upper Givetian and of the Givetian-Frasnian boundaries by means of index conodonts. The joint entry of Mesotaxis falsiovalis and Skeletognathus norrisi in the same bed shows local isochroneity of the beginning of the falsiovalis and norrisi zones in the latest Givetian. In the earliest Frasnian the sequence of Ancyrodella pristina, A. soluta and A. rotundiloba is observed whilst A. binodosa is lacking. The conodont assemblages consist of key species of the following nine genera: Polygnathus, Icriodus, Tortodus, "Ozarkodina", Schmidtognathus, Klapperina, Mesotaxis, Skeletognathus and Ancyrodella. This is the first conodont report from the Pyrenees showing such a detailed succession of enormous correlation potential.

Pleistocene glacigenic sediments around the Polish-Belarussian border are correlated. Tills of the Narevian Glaciation are present in both countries, are those in Poland possibly being order. Within the older South Polish Glaciations (Elsterian) there is no definite evidence of deposits of the Nidanian Glaciation in Belarus, though the younger of these glaciations (Sanian 1 and 2), seem to correspond to the Berezinian Glaciation sensu lato (Yaseldinian and Berezinian sensu stricto). During the older Middle Polish Glaciations (Saalian), comprising two glaciations (Liviecian, Krznanian), the Scandinavian ice sheets occupied Polish territory only. Till of the Odranian + Wartanian Glaciation in Poland is correlated with till of the Dnieperian Glaciation in Belarus. There are similar deposits of the Vistulian Glaciation (Poozerian) in both countries.

The most commonly used Lower and Middle Devonian conodont zonations that some times have been presented as standard zonations are evaluated. The author questions whether the Frasnian standard conodont zonation based on a phylogenetic succession of species belonging to the pelagicgenera Mesotaxis, Palmatolepis and Siphonodella can be used for world wide correlation. He fa vours the idea of an in ter national cono dont ref er ence scale based on a syn the sis of well established and documented conodont successions (with figured specimens of first and last occurrences of index-species) from key areas representing a variety of facies. Graphic correlation is likely to be the most objective and precise method to provide such a synthesis represented by the composite standard. Such standards have been allready elaborated for the Frasnian and the Middle Devonian. This point of view does not imply that classical biozonations should be abandoned.

Opis:
Analysis of type localities of Pleistocene deposits from mid-eastern Poland (Kozi Grzbiet, Łuków, Biała Podlaska and Wilczyn) and southwestern Belarus (Smolarka and Postolovo) has provided a new view on the age, limits and correlation of the oldest Scandinavian glaciations in the area. Integration of palaeontological data with determination of the Brunhes/Matuyama boundary (780 ka) at Kozi Grzbiet and Smolarka suggests that the first glaciation (Narevian) preceded this boundary and had a slightly smaller extent in SW Belarus than hitherto considered. The second glaciation (Nidanian) occurred slightly above or at this palaeomagnetic boundary. In Poland it is the first South Polish Glaciation, a till of which can be traced as far as the Holy Cross Mts. In SW Belarus it is represented by a till to the south of Brest and Bereza, and connected there with the oldest glaciation.

Opis:
The distribution, age and correlation of Pleistocene sediments (1.806–0.01 Ma) is presented for an about 1200 km long geologic cross-section that extends from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea and crosses the eastern part of the Polish Vistula drainage basin, the Dniester and Upper Pripyat drainage basins of the Ukraine, and also parts of the Russian Kaliningrad District andMoldova. In the vicinity of Warsaw, the oldest Pleistocene deposits comprise preglacial fluvio-lacustrine sediments of the Otvockian (Eburonian) cooling and Celestynovian (Waalian) warming stages that equate in the south with the Berezan and Kryzhaniv horizons, composed of loessy clays, silts and red-brown palaeosol. Along the cross-section, deposits of 8 main glaciations correlate with a similar number of main loesses (Narevian–Ilyichivsk, Nidanian–Pryazovsk, Sanian 1–Sula, Sanian 2–Tiligul, Liviecian–Orel, Krznanian–Dnieper 1, Odranian–Dnieper 2–Tyasmyn, Vistulian–Valday) that are separated by 7 main intra-loess palaeosols that developed during the main interglacial periods (Augustovian–Shirokino, Małopolanian–Martonosha, Ferdynandovian–Lubny–Solotvin, Mazovian–Zavadivka–Sokal, Zbójnian–Potagaylivka, Lubavian–Lublinian–Kaydaky–Korshiv, Eemian–Pryluky–Horokhiv). The first three interglacials are megainterglacials, which possibly include cool intervals during which ice sheets did not advance beyond Scandinavia. All glaciations and loesses, as well as interglacials and palaeosols that are considered asmain climatostratigraphic units of the Pleistocene of Central Europe, are grouped into climatic cycles and megacycles that correlate with corresponding units of Western Europe.

A collection of ammonites of the genus Amoeboceras located carefully in the section of Nordvik Peninsula in northern Siberia has enabled recognition of the standard Boreal ammonite zones of the Upper Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian. The recognition of the standard Amoeboceras zones, well known in NW Europe and the Barents Sea area, in northern Siberia indicates the uniform character of the Late Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian ammonite faunas across the whole Boreal Province. Some comments on the occurrence of Boreal oppeliids of the genus Suboxydiscites in the studied section are also given.

The paper give a biostratigraphic interpretation of the Emsian to Eifelian in the Łysogóry and Kielce regions of the Holy Cross Mountains, based on the different groups of microfossils: miospores, conodonts, ostracods and foraminifers. Four miospore zones were identified in the uppermost Pragian, Emsian and lowermost Eifelian: Verrucosisporites polygonalis-Dibolisporites wetteldorfensis (PW), Emphanisporites annulatus-Brochotriletes bellatulus (AB), Emphanisporites foveolatus-Verruciretusispora dubia (FD) and Acinosporites apiculatus-Grandispora protea (AP). In the Łysogóry region, the Emsian and lowermost Eifelian comprises four cono-dont zones: serotinus,patulus,partitus and costatus, three ostracod assemblages and several foraminifer assemblages. In the Kielce region, deposits from the Emsian/Eifelian boundary interval yield conodonts from the patulus and partitus zones, two ostracod assemblages and assemblages of agglutinated foraminifers. The joint biostratigraphic analysis allows a tentative correlation of the lithostratigraphic units from both areas. It also provides independent control/calibration on the different biostratigraphical systems. The Pragian/Emsian boundary is located in the lower part of the Barcza Formation and in the lower part of the Haliszka Formation, whereas the Emsian/Eifelian boundary lies in the upper part of the Grzegorzowice Formation and in the upper part of the Winna Formation.

The paper presents the hardgrounds and some other correlative discontinuity surfaces found in Upper Cretaceous (Cenomanian–Maastrichtian) borehole sections of northern Poland. They were briefly described, and depositional environment was identified for both the underlying deposit (UD) and the overlying deposit (OD). The significance of these features for both basin-wide correlations and broadly understood sequence stratigraphic techniques is highlighted. They were correlated with other major discontinuity surfaces identified in boreholes of northern Poland in both drill cores and well logs if such identification was reliable based on geophysical borehole data. All these discontinuity surfaces were referred to the boundaries of the individual depositional cycles determined within the Upper Cretaceous succession: K3-II/K3-III, K3-III/K3-IV, K3-IV/K4-I, K3-IV/K4-II, K4-I/K4-II (or II or IV or V), K4-III/K4-IV (or V), K4-IVa/K4-IVb, probably K4-IVb/K4-V, and K4-V/Pc-I. The discontinuity surfaces can be related to both sea level fluctuations and tectonic activity during the Subhercynian phases. Most of them developed in relatively calm sedimentary conditions, outside the central part of the Mid-Polish Trough. The exceptions are three hardgrounds from the Człopa–Szamotuły Zone, which seem to be associated mainly with the Late Cretaceous tectonic (including salt tectonics) activity of this zone. The most common UD/OD configuration of sedimentary environments is the open-marine carbonate shelf both beneath and above the discontinuity surface. The second most common situation is the open-marine carbonate shelf beneath and the open-marine shelf with carbonate-siliceous sedimentation above. The gaps at the surfaces span variously long intervals, ranging from short periods (spanning a fraction of a depositional cycle) to long periods (comprising one or more depositional cycles). The position of the discontinuity surfaces facilitates searching for any possible hiatuses in the sections of other boreholes, and paying attention to local changes in sediment distribution patterns, and local tectonic activity.

The present study summarizes the data on the continuous stratigraphic sequence of foraminiferal assemblages from the Volgian deposits of the south-east of Western Siberia. Microfaunal analyses of 650 core samples from 18 boreholes of Volgian deposits were performed. Eighty two foraminiferal species, identified from the samples, were combined into the Volgian assemblages. On the basis of these assemblages, four biostratigraphic units were established in the range of foraminiferal zones and foraminiferal beds with characteristic species. These biostratigraphic units correspond to the upper part of the Kimmeridgian/ lower part of the Volgian, the Middle Volgian (lowermost and uppermost beds), and the Upper Volgian. A detailed biostratigraphic analysis of the Volgian beds was carried out, which enabled a correlation scheme to be developed for major regions of Russia. West-Siberian foraminiferal assemblages were correlated with those of Europe and North America within the Panboreal Superrealm. The species composition of foraminiferal assemblages was analyzed, and correlatable species ere established. This provided an opportunity to correlate coeval strata from Western Siberia, East European (Russian) Platform, northern territories of Siberia and Arctic Islands, Canada, Spitsbergen and England. The possibility was established for correlating Volgian-Tithonian deposits of the Panboreal and Tethys-Panthalassa Superrealms through the Dnieper-Donets Basin where faunas of both southern and Boreal-Arctic types are met.

Opis:
Badenian evaporites of the Carpathian Foredeep Basin represent the lower part of the NN6 zone and are underlain and overlain by deep-water deposits. Halite and associated deposits in the central part of the Badenian evaporite basin show the same facies successions and marker beds can be traced across and between individual basins. Characteristic marker beds made it possible to correlate various facies zones of the marginal Ca-sulfate platform. These marker beds seem to reflect events that may be related to sudden and widespread changes in water chemistry, which in turn imply major changes in basin hydrology. The onset of the evaporitic deposition in the Carpathian Foredeep was clearly diachronous and the evaporites deposited in the basin centre preceded the beginning of evaporite sedimentation in the marginal basin, however, depositional history in the marginal basin and the basin center was the same. Sedimentological and geochemical data indicate recycling of evaporites throughout most of the evaporite deposition.

The "Lower Lias" mudrocks of the Charmouth Mudstone Formation inWest Dorset coast are world famous for their ammonite faunas, which range from mid Lower Sinemurian (Semicostatum Chronozone) to Lower Pliensbachian (topmost Davoei Chronozone) in age. The succession includes significant non-sequences, however, and as certain other intervals yield only crushed and relatively poorly preserved material, much of the sequence of ammonite faunas of this interval in south-west England has remained poorly understood. Inland, however, although it has been realised for many years that some of the missing horizons reappear, the Formation is very poorly exposed and as a consequence little has been known about its detailed stratigraphy and palaeontology. The systematic recording over 40 years by Mr H.C. Prudden (Montacute) of temporary excavations in East Somerset (around 20 km north of the Dorset coast), combined with material collected by others from similar exposures has now, however, revealed a virtually complete sequence of ammonite faunas through the interval represented by the Formation including from many of the which are missing on the Dorset coast. In particular, only one subchronozone remains to be conclusively proven in the region, the terminal Sinemurian, Aplanatum Subchronozone (Raricostatum Chronozone). This faunal succession is correlated with that on the coast to provide a detailed synthesis of the sequence of ammonite biohorizons in the region, which is correlated with a contemporary Standard Zonation and high-resolution biohorizonal/ zonule scheme for interval in North-West Europe. The significance for regional and international correlations of the Lower Lias is also discussed.

A detailed study of the ammonite faunal horizons of the uppermost Kimmeridgian–Lower Volgian of the Middle Volga area (Russia) was undertaken at the most complete and well-known Gorodischi section. This section shows a complete transition from the Kimmeridgian to the Volgian and is a possible SSSP candidate for the Volgian Stage. Sixteen faunal horizons have been established between the top of the Eudoxus Zone and the top of the Lower Volgian. Revised descriptions of existing horizons (especially in the Kimmeridgian) are given and description of new horizons: cf. anglicum, aff. rebholzi, zeissi, ilowaiskii, cf. praecursor, sokolovi, pavida, “Franconites”. Oscillations in the ratios of ammonites with different affinities from horizon to horizon reflect short-term changes in the climate and/or palaeogeography. The presence of ammonites with Submediterranean affinities throughout the studied interval enables correlations to be made with the Tethyan ammonite succession. The evolution of the eudemic Subboreal lineage of Sarmatisphinctes has been analysed, and a succession of species through the complete Autissiodorensis Zone has been recognised. This comprises, in ascending order, S. cf./aff. subborealis, S. subborealis, S. zeissi, S. fallax and S. ilowaiskii. Two of the species described, Sarmatisphinctes zeissi and S. ilowaiskii, are new.

Sarmatian thin-bedded sandstone and shales have been a subject of statistical studies to differentiate between good and poor reservoir rocks and to show gas-saturated layers in comparison to water-saturated strata. Statistical studies including fractal analysis were performed on well logging data from the Sędziszów 34 borehole drilled in a belt of hydrocarbon deposits that continue below the northern edge of the Carpathian–Stebnik overthrust. Lithological variability and porosity differentiation and changes in water saturation were traced on the basis of the results of well logging interpretation. Basic statistics and histograms of petrophysical parameters have been analysed. A generalized second order fractal correlation dimension was calculated for all parameters and analysed as for a time series. Fractal dimensions did not correlated with the parameters, but good positive correlations between them and the parameters were observed and showed that the curves analysed had the same type of complexity. High correlation coefficients showed pairs of fractal dimensions for those parameters which had similar variability and the same curve roughness. The fractal correlation dimension described the type of complexity of the parameter (curve roughness) and indicated, for example, how shaliness influenced the reservoir properties of the local Middle Miocene. Therefore, the results were also useful in practice, which gave extra information on thin-bedded reservoir rocks.
