Opis:
The Paleozoic Platform comprises the southwestern half of the Polish territory, separated from the Precambrian East European Platform (EEP) by a NW–SE trending subvertical lithospheric-scale discontinuity – the Teisseyre-Tornquist Zone. In the present study, the Paleozoic Platform basement is subdivided based on geological and geophysical evidence acquired during the last decades, including deep seismic refraction and reflection results, as well as gravity, magnetic and magnetotelluric data. The units adjacent to the EEP, the Mid-Polish Domain (comprising the Łysogóry Block) and the Pomeranian Block, are characterized by a thinned three-layer EEP-type crystalline crust (age 1.7–3.7 Gy). Their oldest platform cover is probably composed of thick Ediacaran syn-rift sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Their western extension in the contiguous German and Baltic area can be traced as far as the East Elbian Massif and Thor Suture based mainly on magnetic anomaly patterns. The Upper Silesian and Małopolska blocks located in SE Poland are characterized by Cadomian (660–600 My) basement overlain by the thick deformed Ediacaran foredeep deposits. Whereas the units with the EEP-type basement are interpreted as proximal terranes displaced along the EEP margin during the late Early Paleozoic, the blocks with a Cadomian basement are conceived as exotic terranes of a possible Gondwanan provenance. All these terranes were accreted ultimately during the final, latest Silurian stages of the Caledonian deformation although the exact scenario of the amalgamation remains hypothetical. The Sudetic Domain in SW Poland is a collage of different crustal units juxtaposed ultimately in the Pennsylvanian (ca. 310 Ma) during the final episodes of the Variscan Orogeny. Their northern boundary corresponds to the Rheic Suture traceable in magnetic and gravity anomalies pattern along the northern margin of the Wolsztyn–Leszno High, and continuing westwards along the Mid-German Crystalline High. The arcuate trace of the suture in the NE is dextrally displaced along the Odra Fault, and continues southwards where it is mapped as the Moravian–Silesian Suture.

Opis:
The quantity, genetic type and maturity of organic matter dispersed in the Lower Cambrian to the uppermost part of the Silurian (Pridoli) sequence of the Polish part of the Baltic region was determined based on the results of geochemical analyses of a total of 1377 rock samples collected from 38 onshore and offshore boreholes. The best source rocks were found in the Upper Cambrian-Tremadocian succession where present and initial total organic carbon (TOC) contents are up to ca. 18 and 20 wt.%, respectively. Caradocian (Ordovician) strata can be considered as an additional source of hydrocarbons. In the individual boreholes median present and initial TOC contents vary from 0.5 to 3.3 wt.% and from 1 to 6 wt.%, respectively. The Llandovery (Silurian) strata reveal moderate and locally high hydrocarbon potential of the source rocks. The present TOC content reaches locally 10 wt.% (usually 1-2 wt.%). Another source of hydrocarbons can be clayey intercalations within the Middle Cambrian strata. Their organic matter content rarely exceeds 1 wt.%, being often a result of advanced organic matter transformation. In all lower Paleozoic strata investigated from the Polish part of the Baltic region oil-prone, low-sulphur Type-II kerogen occurs, deposited in anoxic or sub-oxic conditions. The maturity of all source rocks changes from the initial phase of the low-temperature thermogenic processes in the northeastern part to the overmature stage in the southwestern part of the study area.

Opis:
The paper deals with the collapse settlement of dump soils i.e., made grounds composed of the overburden soils of mineral deposits, which were worked out with the open-pit method, transported and deposited as a dumped fill. The principal aim of the studies was the analysis of factors controlling the collapse settlement process, mostly the structural model of dump soil and external determinants: initial compaction, initial water content and history of its changes in time as well as the history of loading of studied soil before saturation. In order to reflect the natural structure of dump soils, experiments were carried out on samples of specially modelled lithology and structure. Hence, the samples represented three basic structural models of such soils: non-cohesive, cohesive and transitional, partly cohesive/partly non-cohesive. Attention was paid to diversified dynamics of collapse settlement, which results from two clearly different processes: rebuilding of soil structure and additional consolidation settlement. It was found that from the physical point of view the collapse settlement results from the release of elastic energy delivered to the sample by loading before inundation and accumulated at the contact surfaces of soil lumps.

This paper provides an assessment of geotourism potential of the loess relief of the projected Kamienna Valley Geopark, by selecting the most interesting, scientifically and didactically, gulley regions, comprising natural and cultural heritage related to the occurrence of loess cover. The possibility of using geotourism potential of the loess relief by delineating geotourist routes is evaluated. The main barriers limiting tourism development within the geopark is the low awareness of the loess geoheritage among local administrative units and tourist guides, afforestation, poor access to public transport, and lack of tourist infrastructure in the loess gullies. In summary, the paper points out to the benefits that could be achieved after including the loess areas into the project during the establishment of the Kamienna Valley Geopark.

Analysis of the porosity-depth, permeability-depth, and permeability-porosity relationships, as well as the parameter of reservoir potential RQ (result of relationship porosity v. permeability) of in the Upper Rotliegend sandstones of fluvial and aeolian origin and also of shallow marine (Weissliegend) sandstones from the Zielona Góra Basin in western Poland discussed in relation to the sedimentary settings, coupled with microscopic observations, have indicated that the most important factor determining the reservoir properties is cementation and/or matrix content in the pore space. The map of the mean distribution of the reservoir potential RQ for the topmost 50 metres of the Rotliegend have indicated a patchy distribution of zones with the highest and lowest reservoir potential in the central part of the basin, which is controlled mainly by the amount of carbonate, sulphate and illite cements in the pore space. Compaction had a minor influence on the presently noted reservoir properties, particularly in poorly-cemented sandstones.

The quantity, genetic type and maturity of organic matter dispersed in the Kimmeridgian strata of the central part of the Polish Lowlands were determined on the basis of results of Rock-Eval, stable carbon isotope composition of bitumen, their fractions and kerogen, biomarker distribution in saturate and aromatic hydrocarbon fraction, elemental composition of kerogen, vitrinite reflectance and maceral composition analyses of 225 rock samples collected from 32 boreholes. The study was conducted separately for Lower and Upper Kimmeridgian rocks in the Szczecin-Miechów and Kościerzyna-Puławy synclinoriums and Mid-Polish Anticlinorium. The best source rocks with TOC up to 6.8 wt.%, were found in the vicinity of Gostynin in the Mid-Polish Anticlinorium. Generally, the Upper Kimmeridgian strata are fair and good potential source-rocks whereas the Lower Kimmeridgian strata have much lower hydrocarbon potential. Gas-prone, terrigenous Type-III kerogen predominates in the Lower Kimmeridgian strata. The contribution of oil-prone, marine Type-II kerogen increases in the Upper Kimmeridgian rocks. In the whole profile, only low-sulphur kerogen was recorded, although the situation, when high-sulphur Type-IIS kerogen was mixed with re-worked, non-generative Type-IV kerogen supplied to the sedimentary basin with rocks from eroded land, cannot be excluded. Sedimentary conditions of organic material were variable, usually anoxic and suboxic with domination of siliclastic material in mineral matrix. The maturity of the dispersed organic matter refers mostly to the final phase of the microbial process, or to the initial phase of the low-temperature thermogenic process (oil window). The most mature rocks, corresponding up to 0.75% in the vitrinite reflectance scale, were recognised in the deepest buried parts of the basin (axial part of the Mogilno-Łódź Segment of the Szczecin-Miechów Synclinorium). The most prospecting source rocks were recognised in this area.

Opis:
We determine the organic matter content, its thermal maturity, genetic type, and source rock potential of the Miocene sedimentary rocks in the Czech Carpathian Foredeep. In the Czech Republic the Carpathian Foredeep represents a peripheral foreland basin formed due to the tectonic emplacement and loading of the Alpine-Carpathian Thrust Wedge onto the passive margin of the Bohemian Massif. Random vitrinite/huminite reflectance measurements and maceral analyses were performed on 25 samples from the Carpathian Foredeep succession. Additionally, results of 135 TOC content measurements, 141 Rock-Eval pyrolysis analyses and 27 vitrinite reflectance measurements were used to evaluate the regional distribution and depth trends for the entire Carpathian Foredeep. The thermal maturity of organic matter is between the immature part and peak of the oil window (Tmax = 413–448°C). Beneath the Western Carpathian Thrust Belt, the thermal maturity reaches higher values (Rr = 0.43–0.58%, Tmax = 429–448°C). The hydrocarbon generation potential is poor or fair, even if the total organic carbon values indicate good or even very good source rock potential. This is mainly due to the prevailing gas-prone Type III kerogen. The best source rocks were observed in the Miocene strata of the southern and central segments of the area discussed.

Opis:
With emphasis being placed on the re-examining of mature petroleum basins and reduction of the negative impact of the industry on the environment, the use of archival data in geological exploration is essential. This is especially important in regions where the old, Soviet-type tools were used in the past and which are now using modern, western logging equipment. The application of archival geological, geochemical and geophysical data allows recognition of reservoir formations without the use of modern measurements. For the purpose of this research, Jurassic sandy rocks identified in the archival borehole Z-GN4 were analysed. They appear to be a perfect target for further petroleum and geothermal exploration in the Polish Basin; however, variable mineral composition and diagenetic features can cause difficulties while estimating their reservoir properties. The difference between gamma ray and spontaneous potential shale volume parameter (clay difference) was applied together with gamma ray measurement to determine the impact of primary and diagenetic features on each sandy petrofacies. Based on an integration of detailed petrographic analysis of available core samples from Z-GN4 borehole with archival borehole logs, four different sandy petrofacies were distinguished. Moreover, deep resistivity and sonic logs were used to highlight the carbonate-cemented intervals. This study shows how the application of petrofacies analysis in archival datasets can support the interpretation of uncored intervals and upgrade the level of reservoir characterization.

Formanyyears the Department of Fossil Fuels at the Faculty of Geology, Geophysics and Environment Protection, AGH University of Science and Technology, has conducted the fundamental research and implementation work, including selection of optimum areas for utilization of geothermal water and energy for practical purposes. Recapitulation of the studies was published in the form of Geothermal Atlases of the Polish Lowlands (Górecki, 1990, 1995, 2006) and the Western Carpathians (Górecki, 2011). In 2012 the Geothermal Atlas of the Carpathian Foredeep (Górecki, 2012) was published, which constitute a comprehensive and exhaustive source of information on the occurrence and utilization of geothermal waters and energy in Carpathian Foredeep. Atlas represents a result of interdisciplinary, constructive cooperation of specialists from various fields of science. The 11 selected geothermal aquifers were characterized fromthe point of view of geological setting, extent, depth and thickness of the aquifers, water temperature and mineralization, discharge of hydrogeological intakes and reservoir properties. Results of the research allowed to calculate geothermal resources and indicate the best locations for variety of utilization: balneoterapeuthic, recreation and heating. Atlas contains 214 graphic attachments, most of which are maps as a result of geological modeling carried out. The paper presents example of integrated digital subsurface mapping to identify geothermal potential of the CarpathianForedeep.

Reservoir confinement by faults is important for safe storage of liquid waste or hydrocarbons. Having access to 3D seismic and borehole data, we have interpreted the tectonic setting of the Wysoka Kamieńska Graben (WKG) in the NW part of the Polish Basin and subsequently made an interpretation of the sealing potential of the graben-bounding faults. The formation and development of the graben in the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic was controlled by mechanical decoupling in the salts of the Zechstein Group. The primary tectonic factor triggering the graben origin was dextral strike-slip movement along the regional fault zone in the Paleozoic basement, transtensional accommodation of which in the Zechstein-Mesozoic cover led to development of a horse-tail pattern of grabens. During the Late Cretaceous, the graben underwent minor tectonic inversion. Sealing potential analysis of the graben-bounding faults was performed for the Triassic–Jurassic sequence including juxtaposition seal and fault gouge seal components. Finally, we have focussed our interpretation on the Jurassic sequence where the best reservoirs have been recognized. Our results indicate good to moderate sealing potential of the Hettangian reservoir, poor to moderate sealing of the Pliensbachian reservoir and lack of sealing of the Bajocian reservoir. Hence, the Hettangian reservoir, characterized by large thickness, low clay content and a large regional extent, acts as a potential storage formation, being confined by the graben-bounding faults of the WKG.

Hydrocarbon generation in the Zechstein Main Dolomite and Upper Triassic potential source rocks of the Polish Basin was investigated by 1-D thermal maturity modelling in 90 boreholes across the basin. This identified major zones potentially worthy of further exploration efforts. The maximum burial depth of the Zechstein Main Dolomite and Upper Triassic reached >5 km during the Late Cretaceous leading to maximum thermal maturity of organic matter. Hydrocarbon generation development reveals considerable differences between particular zones of the Zechstein Main Dolomite and Upper Triassic. The kerogen transformation ratio (TR) in the Zechstein Main Dolomite reached values approaching 100% along the basin axis. The TR in the Upper Triassic source rocks is generally lower than in the Zechstein Main Dolomite due to lesser burial. The Upper Triassic source rocks have the highest TR values (>50%) along the basin axis, in the area between boreholes Piła IG 1 and Piotrków Trybunalski IG 1, with the most pronounced zone in the Krośniewice Trough (i.e., between the Krośniewice IG 1 and Budziszewice IG 1 boreholes), where the TR reached >90%. The Zechstein Main Dolomite and Upper Triassic entered the oil window in the Late Triassic to Early–Middle Jurassic, respectively. Hydrocarbon generation continued until the Late Cretaceous, and was completed during tectonic inversion of the basin.

Rocks deposited in the Oligocene Paratethys are recognized as one of the most important source rocks in the Flysch Carpathians. The Šitbořice Member (uppermost NP23 to lowermost NP25 zone) represents the upper part of the Menilite Formation in the Outer Flysch Carpathians of the Czech Republic. This paper presents results of bulk geochemical analysis, Rock-Eval pyrolysis and organic petrography. The geochemical evaluation, source rock potential, kerogen type and thermal maturity were studied using borehole cores. Based on the classification of Peters (1986), the evaluated Šitbořice Member is mostly classified as a “very good” source rock according to TOC and variable, mostly “poor” to “good” according to the petroleum potential. However, the average petroleum potential value assigned the member to “good” source rock which is in accordance with the TOC classification if the “live” TOC is used. A comparable distribution between kerogen type II and III has been indicated by HI. Unlike this, the organic petrography observations show the organic matter belongs to the kerogen type II which corresponds to the relationship of residual hydrocarbon potential versus TOC and HI calculated based on “live” organic carbon. Presumed immaturity was confirmed by Rr and Rock-Eval Tmax. Oxygen-restricted conditions ora dysoxic environment have been indicated by the TOC/TS ratio.

Opis:
In the Lublin region Carboniferous sandstones are represented by subarkosic, quartz and sublithic, occasionally arkosic arenites and wackes. These rocks are characterized by porosity (primary and secondary) ranging from 0 to 22.43% and permeability from 0 to over 1000 mD. Two diagenetic processes, that is compaction and cementation, were primarily responsible for reduction of porosity in these sandstones. The compaction decreased porosity at about 50%, while the cementation at 30%. Quartz, kaolinite and carbonates and locally fibrous illite are the most common cements here. Dissolution is also important as a diagenetic process responsible for development of secondary porosity. Good porosity of the bulk of Carboniferous sandstones is due to precipitation of early overgrowth cements (quartz, Fe-chlorite and siderite), which stopped the mechanical compaction, and dissolution of feldspar grains and authigenic quartz leading to origin of secondary porosity. The processes of mechanical compaction and advanced quartz and carbonate cementation (mainly of the ankerite and Fe-calcite type) as well as crystallization of fibrous illite were the major factors responsible for reduction of porosity in some sandstones. The results of the studies on pore space indicate good reservoir properties of sandstones of the Lublin and Dęblin formations as well as some parts of the Terebin formation. The sandstones from the Huczwa formation and a part of the Terebin formation belong to rocks characterized by low petrophysical parameters. Comparisons of sandstones formed in different environments have shown that best reservoir conditions are displayed by these formed in river channel and delta bottom ennvironments. During diagenesis, the Carboniferous deposits remained under influence of the maximum temperature of about 120oC, but locally the temperatures could have been even higher. Maximum temperatures were reached by the Carboniferous deposits at the end of Carboniferous whereas diagenetic proccesses were active until early Permian. The results of studies on diagenesis of these rocks, projected onto the thermal-erosional model, point to the Variscan overheating.

Opis:
In the present contribution we examine possible role of deposits of the Białopole, Lublin, Włodawa and Mazowsze Forma-tions (uppermost Ediacaran to lowermost Cambrian), as well as their presumed lateral equivalents, developed in the Lublin-Podlasie region as a potential source rock for hydrocarbons. The analysed sediments contain marine kerogen of algal and cyanobacterial ori-gin, i.e., predominantly oil prone. In some parts of the analysed area recent TOC could reach 0.65%, however, primary TOC could be significantly higher, as it is indicated by relatively high maturity of the hydrocarbons. Quality of potential source rock increases towards SW. The analysed potential source rock could be, at least partly, responsible for oil and gas shows, commonly observed in the Lower and Middle Cambrian sandstone horizons.
