Opis:
Thick deep-water sandstone successions are known from many localities in the Outer Western Carpathians. The present study is focused on comparison of deposits of the Piwniczna (PwSM) and Poprad (PpSM) Sandstone members belonging to the Magura Formation of the Magura Unit, outcropping in the eastern Slovakia and Poland border area. At the general level, a close similarity of the sandstone successions was confirmed by this study. However, in more detail, facies analysis shows differences in the thickness of the sandstone successions, in grain size and in the character of intervals between the thick sandstones. Thin-section study, though, showed almost the same modal composition in the sandstones analysed. The sandstone successions studied are interpreted as sandy debrites, the PwSM showing transitional facies to turbidites. These deposits rep resent channelized depositional lobes in the proximal part of a submarine fan with the PpSM closer to the source. The sediment source area was common to both lithostratigraphic units, and was most likely the South-Magura Ridge.

Opis:
Sedimentological analysis of the Early Jurassic Höör Sandstone in Central Scania, Sweden shows that two units representing different lithofacies may be distinguished. The lower Stanstorp Member is characterised by texturally and mineralogically heterogeneous sediments. Mature arenites and immature quartz and subarkosic wackes form two clearly separated groups, interpreted as fluvial channel and alluvial plain deposits respectively. The fluvial character of this member is supported by a dominance of unidirectionally oriented trough sets, abundant plant detritus, the presence of plant roots and palaeosols and a lack of marine body fossils and trace fossils. An intercalated composite polymict conglomerate layer is interpreted as the result of an extraordinary flood. The overlying Vittseröd Member is characterised by mature quartz arenites and large-scale tabular sets with multidirectional orientations. The Vittseröd Member arenites are of storm- and possibly tide-dominated shoreface origin. Bidirectional wave and tide-induced longshore currents and unidirectional onshore migration of sand ridges were the chief depositional processes. Longshore currents towards the NNW prevailed. Upper flow regime features, and erosion and reworking of sediments are attributed to the storm-induced rip currents. Lithofacies characteristics are used to define the following lithostratigraphical units: the Stanstorp and the Vittseröd members, as well as the Höör Sandstone (Fm) above. Lithofacies and palaeoenvironmental characteristics of the Vittseröd Member and their comparison with the facies of the Helsingborg and Döshult members in Western Scania suggest a Sinemurian age for the Vittseröd Member.

Opis:
Rocks deposited in the Oligocene Paratethys are recognized as one of the most important source rocks in the Flysch Carpathians. The Šitbořice Member (uppermost NP23 to lowermost NP25 zone) represents the upper part of the Menilite Formation in the Outer Flysch Carpathians of the Czech Republic. This paper presents results of bulk geochemical analysis, Rock-Eval pyrolysis and organic petrography. The geochemical evaluation, source rock potential, kerogen type and thermal maturity were studied using borehole cores. Based on the classification of Peters (1986), the evaluated Šitbořice Member is mostly classified as a “very good” source rock according to TOC and variable, mostly “poor” to “good” according to the petroleum potential. However, the average petroleum potential value assigned the member to “good” source rock which is in accordance with the TOC classification if the “live” TOC is used. A comparable distribution between kerogen type II and III has been indicated by HI. Unlike this, the organic petrography observations show the organic matter belongs to the kerogen type II which corresponds to the relationship of residual hydrocarbon potential versus TOC and HI calculated based on “live” organic carbon. Presumed immaturity was confirmed by Rr and Rock-Eval Tmax. Oxygen-restricted conditions ora dysoxic environment have been indicated by the TOC/TS ratio.

Opis:
A diverse Late Oligocene to Early Miocene calcareous nannofossil assemblage was examined from the Qom Formation in the Central Iran Basin, and the Oligocene-Miocene boundary was identified based on the quantitative analysis of the assemblages in 303 smear slides. Eleven well-established calcareous nannofossil bio-events are delineated in the Upper Oligocene through Lower Miocene. The results clearly show that the Highest Occurrence (HO) of Sphenolithus delphix is the closest bio-event to the boundary as traditionally delineated on the lithostratigraphic criteria, and provides a distinct biohorizon below it. The Lowest Occurrence (LO) of the species Discoaster druggii is the oldest Miocene bio-event that is observed shortly after the HO of S. delphix, showing that calcareous nannofossils are well suited for approximating the Oligocene-Miocene boundary in the Qom Formation. The Oligocene-Miocene boundary is placed in the upper part of Sub-member “c1” in all three sections studied here and it is traceable throughout the Central Iran Basin, which makes a potentially reliable marker horizon for sequence stratigraphic and hydrocarbon studies in the area.

Opis:
The paper deals with the major eastern fault in the Mesozoic substratum of the City of Poznań. In this area, only few boreholes reached the top of the Mesozoic succession. It is the reason why this fault cannot be mapped. Therefore, it is indicated the dependence between the relief of the Mesozoic substratum and the morphology of the lignite seam base in adjacent areas where numerous boreholes reached the top Mesozoic surface. This dependence was best expressed at times when the major fault in the substratum was active after peat sedimentation. Subsequently, the structural map of the base of the first Middle-Polish Lignite Seams, pierced by many boreholes, was analyzed. In this way, using an indirect method, location of the major fault in the Mesozoic substratum of the City of Poznań was quite precisely determined.

Opis:
The purpose of the study was petrographic-mineralogical analysis of volcaniclastic rocks occurring in the Lublin Basin, within the Kłodnica Member (Tournaisian, Visean), in seven boreholes. Its results were linked with the results of sedimentological and sequence stratigraphy studies to reconstruct the genesis of the sediments, as well as spatial and age relationships. Fine and coarse ash tuffs were identified, whose composition indicates acidic and alkaline volcanism. Accompanying volcaniclastic conglomerates and sandstones were formed mainly in the Tournaisian, before volcanic activity began. These sediments fill incised valleys, and belong to the oldest Carboniferous sedimentary filling of the Lublin Basin.

Since April 2012, the Division of Renewable Energy Sources of the Mineral and Energy Economy Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences has been participating in the EU Project called Promote Geothermal District Heating Systems in Europe (GEODH) within the frame of Intelligent Energy Europe Program. The Project will last 30 months and aims to accelerate the market penetration by geothermal energy in district heating systems in Europe. This shall be achieved by addressing and removing regulatory, financial and market barriers at regional and local levels - adequate proposals will be developed and then presented to relevant decision makers in all countries embraced by the Project. The GEODH gathers 10 partners representing 14 countries, was initiated and is coordinated by the European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC). The activities will focus on seven Central and Eastern European member states (including Poland) and on seven old member states. The purpose of the Project is directly coupled with a long-term perspective of increasing the uptake ofgeothermal district heating in the heat market by 2020 (following 3x20 set ofEU directives) through the improvement and expansion of geothermal district heating systems in European countries. Moreover, geothermal energy is still in a shadow of other renewable energy sources on our continent, but does creates a prospective source for many district heating systems, which can significantly contribute to achieve 20% of renewables in final energy consumption in EU by 2010.

Opis:
Geochemical analysis of the 50 samples of the Middle Triassic black shales (organic carbon-rich siltstones) has been carried out. The black shale samples (up to 4.92 % TOC) have been collected in the stratotype profile of the Bravaisberget Formation, west Spitsbergen. In the examined profile, the black shales occur exclusively in the Passhatten Member (the lower and middle interval of the Bravaisberget Formation). Black shale samples have been analyzed in respect to degree of pyritization (DOP), isotopic composition of pyrite sulphur (34S) and organic carbon content (TOC). The main goal of the research was to examine a degree of oxygenation and dynamics of a sea-bottom environment. DOPvalues from lower section of the Passhatten Member show wide variation, ranging from 0.29 to 0.92. In upper section of the member, the obtained DOPvalues show narrower range of variations, from 0.77 to 0.98.Wide variations of DOPwere caused by temporary coexistence of oxic and anoxic bottom currents. In turn, narrow DOP variations indicate predominance of stratified water and anoxic bottom currents. DOP/34S and DOP/TOC ratios imply that syngenetic and early diagenetic pyrite precipitation during accumulation of the lower section of the Passhatten Member was controlled by availability of organic carbon and reactive iron, whereas accumulation of the member's upper section was controlled exclusively by availability of reactive iron.

Opis:
Three broad lithofacies – bioturbated packstone- to rudstone, calcareous sandstone and cross-bedded rudstone to packstone are recognized within the Jajiya Member. The facies architecture and stalking pattern suggests deposition related to TST, HST and TST events punctuated by MFZ events in sequence stratigraphic terms. The 11.4 m thick sequence represents two fining upward and three coarsening upward cycles representing bar-bank depositional settings. The framework constituents of these facies were mainly controlled by the depositional conditions through space and time and have greatly influenced their diagenetic evolution. The main diagenetic features observed within the facies include compaction, early cementation and porosity reduction, micritization and neomorphism representing early or syn-depositional and post-depositional changes. Two phases of early mechanical compaction have largely governed porosity development in these facies. However, cementation, micritization and neomorphism have also contributed significantly in this respect. Evidence suggests that marine phreatic and fresh water phreatic environments dominated the diagenetic evolution of these facies. Calcite cementation was first formed, followed by iron oxide, while silica cementation occurred probably at a late stage.

Opis:
The upper Cambrian-Silurian Piaœnica, Sasino, Udal and Pelplin formations and the Jantar Member include the most organic-rich lower Paleozoic sedimentary rocks in the Baltic-Podlasie-Lublin Basin in Poland. These rocks vary significantly in terms of vertical and lateral organic matter distribution. Generally, the siltstones, mudstones, claystones and shales are characterized by TOC values from 0.1 to as much as 17.4 wt. %. Typically, the maximum TOCvaluesreachabout9wt.%.Rock-Eval,organicmatterpetrologyandbiomarkersdataclearly indicate dominance of type II kerogen. Thermal maturity of organic matter of these rocks is variable and depends mainly on the burial history and depth. In the western slope of the East-European Craton the petroleum prospective formations are located throughout the whole spectrum of thermal maturity zones, from the immature zone (eastern margin of the formations occurrence), through the oil, condensate and gas windows, to the overmature zone dominated by exhausted source rocks in the western margins of the study area.
