Opis:
Several new specimens of ammonites from the Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian of Kachchh, western India, are described and illustrated. The Oxfordian ammonites ?Subdiscosphinctes Malinowska, Perisphinctes Waagen, Dichotomoceras Buckman, and ?Larcheria Tintant, all from Bharodia in the Wagad Uplift, enable tentative biochronostratigraphic correlations with the uppermost Middle Oxfordian up to the lower Upper Oxfordian of the unified Submediterranean zonation, whereas the Kimmeridgian ammonites Streblites Hyatt, “Orthosphinctes” Schindewolf, Torquatisphinctes Spath, Pachysphinctes Dietrich, Katroliceras Spath, Aspidoceras Zittel, and Schaireria Checa reconfirm a stratigraphic gap embracing incompletely known parts of the uppermost Oxfordian and the Lower Kimmeridgian as known from the ammonite records of the Kachchh Mainland of the Kachchh Basin.

Opis:
The Lower - lowermost Upper Jurassic (up to Oxfordian) sedimentary succession of the Jaisalmer Basin on the Rajasthan Shelf is characterized by gradual lateral and rapid temporal facies variations, the existence of condensed sequences in certain horizons, and rich and highly diverse faunal contents. Lithostratigraphically, these Jurassic rocks of the basin have been grouped into the Lathi and Jaisalmer formations and the lower part of the Baisakhi Formation. The facies consist of (i) cross-bedded medium- to coarse-grained sandstone, (ii) cross-bedded to thinly laminated silt to fine-grained sandstone, (iii) silty marl, (iv) calcareous mud- to grainstone and sandy rudstone, (v) thinly laminated carbonaceous shale and (vi) conglomerate. These represent fluvial, floodplain, lacustrine, protected marginal marine, and shoreface to shelf environments. There are several marker units, which allow the making of intrabasinal lithostratigraphic correlations; however, a lack of knowledge of the detailed stratigraphic successions within individual lithostratigraphic units makes difficult a precise intra-basinal stratigraphic correlation. The present review provides a summary of the lithostratigraphy established by previous workers on the Lower - lowermost Upper Jurassic (up to Oxfordian) rocks of the Jaisalmer Basin, incorporating additional data, with a detailed stratigraphic succession within each lithostratigraphic unit, and more faunal elements recently.

Opis:
The life of Profesor Józef Zwierzycki was extremely interesting. He was born in Krobia, Western Poland, under the Prussian Partition. He completed his geological study in Berlin, at Humbolt University. Then, he worked in NetherlandIndia (presently Indonesia), where he described metallic ores (Zn, Ag), discovered crude oil, constructed geological maps, andfinally he was the chiefof the Geological Survey. Józef Zwierzycki was decorated by the Netherland Government with the Oranje - Nassau Order, the highest civil order of the Netherlands. When he came back to Poland, he was arrested by the German occupant and sent to Auschwitz. After the Second World War, he organised the geology faculty at Wroclaw University, where he gave lectures on stratigraphy and economic geology. Józef Zwierzycki supplied instruction to the Government on where to search the Cu ores in Lower Silesia. Together with eng. Wyżykowski, Prof. Zwierzycki is considered as the discoverer of this famous Cu deposit.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of micromorphological analyses concerning soil covers near Cherrapunji with mean annual rainfall of 12 000 mm. Two soil profiles representing typical land use: grass formation (Cherrapunji–1) and natural evergreen forest (Cherrrapunji–2) have been choosen. Processes leading to formation of Dystric Cambisols predominate in both profiles. However they have different weathering features. Soil cover under grass has more weathered quartz and contains less feldspars compared to soil cover in the forest area. Soils are characterized also by a large volume of pores which is typical for the tropical humid areas. The rapid infiltration of large amounts of water protects forest soil from surficial erosion. In case of soils under grass vegetation, micropores are filled with fresh organic matter (fine roots and plants tissue). Since both profiles are located on similar substratum (Paleogene sandstones) and under the same climatic conditions, it is assumed that the micromorphological differences are due to long-term (several centuries) differences in local land use.

Opis:
The Middle to Late Jurassic succession of the Jhura Dome (Jhurio and Jumara formations) of the Mainland Kachchh, western India, comprises a ~500 m thick succession of clastic carbonates and mixed siliciclastic-carbonates, intercalated with shales. The sequence, as based on sedimentological characteristics, exhibits six sedimentary facies and four subfacies. Certain exceptional bands of the ripplemarked calcareous sandstone, shale and oolitic limestone facies are rich in ammonites, belemnites, brachiopods and bivalves. Thirty four ichnogenera were also identified and analysed paleoecologically. These trace fossils represent five ethological categories and six ichnoassemblages. Seventeen ichnoguilds are demonstrated based on space utilization for characterising the ecological complexity of ichnoassemblages. Bathymetric control of the trace fossils resulted with development of Skolithos, Cruziana and Zoophycos ichnofacies type conditions. The sedimentological and ichnological data analysis revealed seven distinctive depositional regimes ranging from offshore shelf below storm wave base to middle shoreface.

Opis:
The Kota Formation of the Pranhita-Godavari Basin is well known for its fossil fauna and flora especially for its silicified woods. However, the palaeoflora and its palaeoclimatic significance within the formation are poorly known. In spite of the fact that the formation yields a rich fauna and flora chronostratigraphic problems still exist. The present study aims to analyze the palaeofloras from the Kota Formation to understand their diversity and palaeoecological significance. We also describe a new species Agathoxylon kotaense belonging to the conifer family Araucariaceae. Our study shows that the flora was dominated by conifers and that it is comparable to that of the ?Late Jurassic – Lower Cretaceous Gangapur Formation, Pranhita-Godavari Basin and that of the Rajmahal Formation of the Rajmahal hills. The growth ring pattern and leaf fossil assemblage suggest that the growth conditions were seasonal, but mostly stressed.

Opis:
Two dinosaur footprints: Eubrontes cf. giganteus and Grallator tenuis, both attributed to theropods, have been found in the Lower Jurassic Thaiat Member of the Lathi Formation at the Thaiat ridge, near Jaisalmer in western Rajasthan, India. The footprints were left in sediments of a tidal origin, located in profile a few meters above a marked transgressive/flooding surface. They show different states of preservation – the smaller Grallator tenuis represents a well-preserved concave epirelief footprint on the upper surface of a sandstone containing nerineid gastropod shells, while the bigger Eubrontes cf. giganteus footprint shows a rare state of preservation as a positive epirelief on the top of a calcareous sandstone bed, where recent erosion exposed the footprint cast by removing the mud above and around the footprint. The Thaiat ridge section has been amended in its lower part, to indicate the marked transgressive surface. Geochemical analyses and calculated weathering indices (such as CIA) show that the hinterland climate was seasonal to semi-arid during deposition of that part of the succession.

Opis:
The shallow marine deposits of the Late-Middle Jurassic (Callovian–Oxfordian) Jumara Formation of the Gangeshwar Dome of Mainland Kachchh, India, comprise a succession of ~247 m thick clastic sediments with few non-clastic bands and contain a diverse group of ichnofauna. The succession is subdivided into seven lithofacies, viz., laminated shale-siltstone facies (LSS), sheet sandstone facies (SS), herringbone sandstone facies (HS), bivalve sandstone facies (BS), bioclastic limestone facies (BL), intraformational conglomerate facies (IC) and oolitic limestone facies (OL). The ichnofaunal study shows 29 ichnospecies of 23 ichnogenera including Arenicolites, Bifungites, Bolonia, Chondrites, Didymaulichnus, Diplocraterion, Gyrochorte, Helminthopsis, Isopodichnus, Laevicyclus, Lockeia, Monocraterion, Taenidium, Ophiomorpha, Palaeophycus, Planolites, Phycodes, Protopalaeodictyon, Rhizocorallium, Skolithos, Thalassinoides, Tisoa, and Zoophycos. These trace fossils are distributed among nine ichnocoenose, characterized by Chondrites, Diplocraterion, Gyrochorte, Ophiomorpha, Rhizocorallium, Skolithos, Taenidium, Thalassinoides and Zoophycos. Their occurrence in the facies corresponds to their trophic and ethological properties. The colonisation of the opportunistic Diplocraterion and the Skolithos ichnocoenose shows a high den¬sity and marks foreshore/nearshore environmental conditions. The Gyrochorte, the Rhizocorallium, the Taenidium and the Thalassinoides ichnocoenose indicate the typically lower energy zone of the shoreface-offshore region. The Chondrites ichnocoenosis indicates fluctuation in bottom water oxygen while the Zoophycos ichnocoenosis typically exploited a calm water niche in the offshore region. These ich-nocoenose recur throughout the sequence and belong to the Skolithos and the Cruziana ichnofacies which marked changes in energy gradient, substrate stability, water depth and mode of life of invertebrate organisms. The study of trace fossil assemblages with sediment characteristics gives a detailed and accurate picture of foreshore to offshore palaeoenvironmental conditions.

Opis:
This paper examines the depositional environment and diagenetic aspects of the exposed Patcham and Chari formation within the Habo Dome. The Patcham Formation is represented by the Black Limestone Member. The Chari Formation is represented by two distinct sedimentary successions: (i) shale and carbonates, and (ii) coarse clastics. The paper describes eleven lithofacies from these successions. The depositional framework constituents of these facies have been greatly modified by diagenetic evolution through time. Two main depositional environments, i.e. foreshore intertidal and shoreface (subtidal), have dominated during their deposition. The diagenetic signatures observed within these sediments suggest early or syndepositional changes in marine phreatic and burial environments. Two phases of early mechanical compaction have largely governed porosity evolution within the limestone facies. Micritization of the allochems was caused by endolithic algae prevalent within the restricted lagoon environments with stagnant marine phreatic zone conditions. Random dissolution of microcrystalline grains has created vugs with patchy distribution reflecting neomorphism within the meteoric vadose zone. The types of cements within the sandstone facies include silica, calcite, and its replacement by Fe-calcite cement. The sandstones were deposited in a relatively low energy environment below storm wave base. The depositional conditions have controlled the early diagenesis of the sandstones which in turn have influenced their burial diagenesis.

Opis:
The Middle Jurassic Kaladongar Formation, Patcham Island, Kachchh, western India, comprises of a 353 m-thick mixed siliciclastic-carbonate succession of asymmetrical shallowing and deepening upward sedimentary cycles. It is subdivided into five main facies i.e., micritic sandstone, allochemic sandstone, sandy allochem limestone, micritic mudrock, and sandy micrite along with shales and conglomerates. Eight trace fossil assemblages comprising 34 ichnogenera are defined, including the Asterosoma, Gyrochorte, Rhizocorallium, Thalassinoides, Planolites–Palaeophycus, Phycodes, Ophiomorpha, and Skolithos assemblages that reflect five depositional facies: offshore, transitional, lower, middle, and upper shoreface. The sedimentary packages and associated trace fossil assemblages are separated by various discontinuities, stratigraphic surfaces and stratigraphic boundaries within the succession of the Kaladongar Formation and reveal three phases of regression (RST-I, RST-II and RST-III) and three phases of transgression (TST-II, III and IV) within the 3rd order systems tracts developed in the slowly transgressing sea during the Bajocian-Bathonian time interval.

Three broad lithofacies – bioturbated packstone- to rudstone, calcareous sandstone and cross-bedded rudstone to packstone are recognized within the Jajiya Member. The facies architecture and stalking pattern suggests deposition related to TST, HST and TST events punctuated by MFZ events in sequence stratigraphic terms. The 11.4 m thick sequence represents two fining upward and three coarsening upward cycles representing bar-bank depositional settings. The framework constituents of these facies were mainly controlled by the depositional conditions through space and time and have greatly influenced their diagenetic evolution. The main diagenetic features observed within the facies include compaction, early cementation and porosity reduction, micritization and neomorphism representing early or syn-depositional and post-depositional changes. Two phases of early mechanical compaction have largely governed porosity development in these facies. However, cementation, micritization and neomorphism have also contributed significantly in this respect. Evidence suggests that marine phreatic and fresh water phreatic environments dominated the diagenetic evolution of these facies. Calcite cementation was first formed, followed by iron oxide, while silica cementation occurred probably at a late stage.
