    Opis:
    This article envisages turning points in the process of implementation of the continental drift hypothesis to the knowledge on the development of the Earth’s crust. In the author’s opinion, they were most of all linked with the development of palaeomagnetism, a discipline integrating methods of geophysics and geology. Alfred Wegener has been included into the Science Hall of Fame, thanks to studies by Brunhes on inversely magnetized rocks of Auvergne, discovery of geomagnetic inversions of Icelandic lavas by Hospers, polar wander paths construction by Creer and Irving, ending with Pangea reconstruction by Bullard, Everett and Smith, bridging the concept of continental drift and plate tectonics theory.

    Opis:
    In July–September 2004 and April 2005, the specialists of the Department of Marine and Environmental Geology of All-Russian Geological Institute (VSEGEI) conducted field studies of the coastal zone of the Gulf of Finland from thesouthern alignment of the St. Petersburg Flood Protective Dam to Lebyazhye. The basic purpose of the studies is the analysis of coastal zone dynamics. Along the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland from Lebyazhye to the Dam, three different coastal dynamics zones were identified: (1) flat accumulative shore with aquatic plants, (2) erosion zone and (3) zone of modern sand accumulation. Along-shore sand drift in the eastern direction was also determined. Alongside with routine observations, the comparative analysis of space photography images of the study area, carried out during last 20 years, allowed finding out that as a result of intense eastward sand transfer, as mush as 80 metres of sand accumulative bodies have been eroded since 1982 near the village of Izhora. To the west of a small river, a 230-metres long sand split has been formed since 1982.

    The article portrays the figure of Alfred LotharWegener (1880–1930) – creator of the continental drift hypothesis. Wegener was not only the creator of geotectonic hypothesis that is famous all over the World, but his interests were very diverse. He was a meteorologist and geophysicist of atmosphere, but he carried out experiments with the genesis of lunar craters too. He was active in the research of Treys meteorite that fell to the ground on April 3, 1916, in the forest near Rommershausen in Hesia (Germany). However, his true passion was research of Greenland – he attended four expeditions to this island and during the last expedition he died. His idea is still very important in the present-day theory of plate tectonics.

    The modern theory of plate tectonics has been the basis of works of several generations of geologists and geophysicists. One of them was Alfred Wegener and his theory of continental drift. The imperfection of the theory (lack of any explanation for the mechanism of continents movement) was the driving force for further studies. The most important ones were the detailed recognition of the ocean floor, and the discovery of the rift and subduction zones.
